At least six buildings on Pulau Weh, an island north of Banda Aceh, were damaged due to an earthquake sequence that shook the region on thursday morning local time. According to BMKG the strongest quake with a magnitude of 4.8 occurred at 22:30 UTC (June 3). It was precered by foreshocks of magnitude 4.0 and 4.2 and followed by several weaker aftershocks.
Although the mainshock epicenter was located right south of Banda Aceh, the damage and intensity reports indicate an epicenter on the southern edge of Pulau Weh, where also some of the aftershocks were located (as shown in the map below).
Local media report that among the six damaged structures at least three suffered major damage with partial collapses. However, nobody was injured. Due to the continuous shocks, most residents of the area have left their buildings, fearing further quakes.
The quake sequence originates from the northernmost segment of the Great Sumatra Fault, one of the largest strike-slip faults in the world that crosses the Indonesian island Sumatra from north to south. It is known for frequent moderate to strong quakes which often lead to some damage due to their shallow depth.
