27.01.2012 – For the 2nd time in 2 days, a moderate earthquake has hit off the northern coast of Greece near Heraklion. The town of Khania recorded an intensity of V, and in some places in Heraklion it was felt as strongly.

Strong very dangerous earthquake in Iran near Nayshabur (Mashhad) – 236 people injured

19.01.2012 – A very shallow magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck very close to Nayshaboor, a city with a population of 221,000 inhabitants. Especially some bigger villages close to the epicenter may be at risk.

Strong dangerous coastal earthquake near Guiuan, Samar, The Philippines – high chance of landslides

17.01.2012 – Strong coastal earthquake. Initial reports were mentioning a magnitude of 5.9, and PHIVOLCS, the Philippines seismological agency also reported a dangerous M 5.9 at a depth of 25 km. Heavy rains will make earthquake-induced landslides a major risk.

CATDAT Damaging Earthquakes Database 2011 – Annual Review

09.01.2011 – The M9.0 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami of 11th March, 2011 proved to be the most expensive earthquake of all time, causing between $400-700 billion USD in total losses and approximately 19000 deaths, while the Christchurch earthquake (a M6.3 quake close to the city of Christchurch) caused a huge building stock loss and approximately $15-20 billion USD damage with around 80% insured losses. Their respective aftershocks caused further damage. Significant losses were also seen in Turkey from the Van earthquake in October, in the India-Nepal-Tibet region in September, in China from numerous earthquakes in the Yunnan and Xinjiang Provinces and in the USA from the Virginia earthquake.
