Update 15:08 UTC: Very serious damage
Update 09:29 UTC: People fled to the hills and stayed there because they feared a potential tsunami (we call it auto-evacuation) + some damage inside a house
Update 09:18 UTC: after a major earthquake people have often no other choice than sleeping under the sky as staying in their homes is too dangerous
Update 09:11 UTC: ** 2 people have been killed ** 500 houses have been destroyed ** 1104 people have been displaced
Update 09:06 UTC: Mini-tsunami waves after the earthquake (luckily the epicenter was below land otherwise the story would have been potentially totally different)
Update 21:55 UTC: so far we know that 1 person was killed and that 50 houses have been destroyed.
Update 12:39 UTC: As it is nighttime in Indonesia, we have not yet received numbers of possible damage or injuries.
Update 12:37 UTC: Although there was no potential for a tsunami, residents panicked and decided to auto-evacuate and run to safety.
The shock was large enough to make people leave the house. Electricity also went out some time after the first earthquake.
Update 12:35 UTC: Based on data obtained from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami. Ali said his side had not received detailed information about the impact of the damage caused by the earthquake. Azis, one of the residents of Labuha who was confirmed separately said that the residents chose to flee to a safe location for fear of a tsunami. "Earlier the sea water suddenly dropped after that sea water rose again so we were afraid and displaced," he said.
Update 10:40 UTC: The Indonesian authorities have determined that the earthquake is due to a strike-slip mechanism. A first magnitude 5.6 aftershock, located 20 kilometers southeast of the main quake, indicates that the breach has spread parallel to the peninsula's course. This means that all villages along the coast are equally affected by the quake and far-reaching damage is likely.
Update 10:35 UTC: people auto-evacuating to higher grounds because of the Tsunami risk
Update 10:27 UTC: The region experiences serious aftershocks (latest one M5.3).
Update 10:25 UTC: Based on the calculations of the CatNews specialists, more than 200,000 people may experience damage in their houses. They have an MMI of VI or more, indication strong shaking.
Update 10:06 UTC: Shaking map with possible related damage from the natural disaster specialists at CATnews (Risklayer - CEDIM), Karlsruhe, Germany. Map generated by Andreas Schäfer.
Update 10:02 UTC: Professor Max Wyss, who specialises in theoretical prognoses of injuries and fatalities expects : 200 up to 1,000 fatalities 1,000 tot 5,000 injuries
Due to the sparsely populated region ER does not believe that these high numbers will become reality.
Update 09:50 UTC: Shaking impact on nearby cities and villages and on the population in MMI (Modified Mercalli scaled).
Update 09:46 UTC: At least 3 communities are at risk for serious damage (see picture below). Luckily no major cities in the most critical radius;
Update 09:31 UTC: Impressive seismogram as recorded in Ternate, Moluccas, Indonesia
Update 09:18 UTC: Based on the present earthquake parameters (Magnitude, Depth, Population, etc) and our experience with earthquake damage impact, earthquake-report.com calls this earthquake extremely dangerous and expects injuries and serious damage
Most important Earthquake Data:
Magnitude : 7.1
Local Time (conversion only below land) : Unknown
GMT/UTC Time : 2019-07-14 09:10:51
Depth (Hypocenter) : 10 km
