Update 26.05.2015 07:00 UTC:
Over the past 5 days, the death toll has completely stabilised in Nepal.
The death toll from the 1st earthquake has now totalled 8510 in Nepal (and 164 in other countries) and the 2nd earthquake totalled 163 in Nepal (and 65 dead in other countries.
The missing toll is now down to 199 in Nepal. Of these, around 170 were in affected earthquake regions. In addition, 80 foreigners remain missing.
This means that unfortunately the death toll from both quakes in all countries is 8674 + 228 (8,902).
Of these around 600-1000 were from landslides and non-shaking building collapse fatalities.
Update 21.05.2015 07:00 UTC:
Good news overnight - the missing count has reduced by 38 to 237.
Attached are the death tolls over time from the 25th April until now, as counted. Please note the 25th April includes 21 deaths from various aftershocks.
It looks as though the death toll has stabilised and we hope that many of the missing are found safe and well. Around 7300-7800 of the deaths were due to shaking and collapse of buildings, with around 500-1000 through landslide and other secondary effects.
Death tolls as counted by Nepal Police and NEOC through CATDAT for the 25th April and 12th May earthquakes for Nepal
Update 20.05.2015 09:54-12:00 UTC:

Update : OCHA (UN) highlights
- Ministry of Information and Communications announced cabinet’s endorsement of a short-term relief package which includes a 15,000 Nepalese rupees grant (approximately US$150) for people to build temporary shelter before monsoon season.
- Local authorities request a flexible approach to shelter assistance, taking into consideration differences in traditional housing. Minimum shelter standards were developed to guide responders.
- UN General Assembly emphasizes the importance of integrating a gender perspective into the earthquake response.
- Humanitarian partners consider increased roll-out of cash programming in remote communities with functional markets.
Update : The Ministry of Local Development has banned the construction of buildings over two-storeys tall until mid-July. The ministry has also put on hold the approval of new house designs for the same period. This has been confirmed. This is due to the amount of illegal and non-building code compliant construction that has been seen through the earthquake damage.
Update : According to NEOC :- Government has Banned Construction of greater than two story buildings throughout Nepal - this will need to be verified.
Update : The following is a full summary of the latest numbers:
25th April 2015 Quake:
Deaths:
Missing:
Of the 8442 deaths and 281 missing in Nepal, many of the missing (likely deaths) are from landslide areas. Landslides have caused around 8-10% of fatalities, trying to piece together information from news reports.
The total deaths for the 25th April 2015 Quake including missing total 8617 + 284 (ca. 8900 possibly)
Injured:
12th May 2015 Quake: (213 deaths, 3500+ injured)
Deaths:
Injured:
Update : Tracking the death toll for the last 3 and a half weeks, the count now seems quite stable, and follows a normal death toll increase, thus we can be quite confident there are no "abnormal" jumps like we saw in Haiti 5 years ago.
The final death toll will likely be around the 9000-9500 fatality mark. A terrible, terrible event and the 37th most deadliest earthquake since 1900.
Update : In Nepal, 141 deaths and 3142 injured have been reported from the 12th May earthquake.
Update : From the 25th April earthquake and other aftershocks, 8426 deaths have been reported ( up 77 from 36 hours ago)
Update : UN assembly adopts resolution on 'Strengthening emergency relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction' in Nepal
The Nepal Earthquake Flash Appeal launched by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stands at $423 million to support people through immediate lifesaving aid operations. But the appeal is currently only 14 per cent funded, Mr. Ban pointed out.
Update : bodies of six Marines and two Nepali soldiers are recovered
The bodies of six Marines and two Nepali soldiers who were aboard a U.S. Marine helicopter that crashed during a relief mission in earthquake-hit Nepal have been recovered, Nepal's army said.
The wreckage of the UH-1 "Huey" was found Friday following days of intense searching in the mountains northeast of capital Kathmandu. The first three charred bodies were retrieved the same day by Nepalese and U.S. military teams, and the rest on Saturday, the Nepalese army said in a statement .

In addition, 260026 housing units and 1839 government buildings have been partially damaged (minor, moderate damage but still livable).
Thus a total of 751,000 households or around 626,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed.
Update : China has released a full estimate of their losses with 27 dead, 3 missing and 860 injured. 300507 people were in the affected region of which 137,325 people were relocated.
In the 12th May earthquake, 1 death and 4 injuries were recorded with 7803 people affected and 3989 people relocated.
In total, the direct economic losses for China are in the order of 757.51 million CNY (122 million USD).
Update : Nepal has released new numbers on the fatalities:
25.04 M7.8 Quake – 8349 dead + 117 missing in Nepal (17870 injured); 130 dead in India; 27 dead + 3 missing in China (860 injured); 4 dead in Bangladesh = 8630 dead.

Update : OCHA (United Nations) situation overview
Partners continue to reach more of the remote and hard-to-reach areas in the most affected districts. The focus is also on ensuring that pipelines are in place before the monsoon season starts..
Access remains a critical issue, especially as aftershocks continue to generate landslides. The coming monsoon is expected to aggravate the condition of the roads, further hampering aid efforts.
The Multi-National Military Coordination Centre is reporting that the aftershock on 15 May at 7:30 a.m. (UTC+ 5:45) in Dhading District has caused a landslide at Nilkhantha Village Development Committee (VDC), blocking the road from Dharkha to Marpak. Another massive landslide approximately 800 metres south of Kattike Village Development Committee (VDC) blocked roads in central Sindhupalchowk.
There were reports of additional damage to already vulnerable buildings following the 12 May quake. This prompted new rapid assessment, including in Charikot Municipality, in Dolakha District (on13 and 14 May) and Makawanpur (14 May).
In Charikot, over 50 per cent of houses seem to be uninhabitable. Further north, in Singati and in surrounding villages, the assessment team observed total devastation of homes and reported limited supplies of food and water. Additional needs may be expected as infrastructure was also heavily impacted.
In Makawanpur District, partners reported less damage than in surrounding districts. However, quality tarpaulins and support for reestablishment of damaged schools are still required.
Most families displaced by the 25 April earthquake who fled to Tundikel site, near Chautara humanitarian hub, would like to return to their homes, land and areas of residence. However, as most of these families reported that their houses were either destroyed or damaged, temporary shelter is a prerequisite for their return.
Sustainable waste management and drainage, as well as water supply are required in the Tudikel site to ensure appropriate hygiene and sanitation for new arrivals and current occupants.. Local authorities and armed forces are liaising with humanitarian partners to identify appropriate site management.
On 15 May, the Shelter Cluster completed the design of temporary shelter resistant enough to withstand heavy monsoon rains. The Government is looking at providing 5,000 Nepalese Rupees (approx. US$50) per family and standardizing the distribution of roofing material to affected communities. It has asked for uniformity in delivery among supporting agencies.
As of 15 May 07:00 a.m. local time (UTC + 5:45) the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) reported a total of 8,462 deaths and another 20,000 people injured (cumulative from 25 April earthquake). Nearly 489,000 homes were destroyed and another 260,000 damaged.
Update 16:42 UTC : What Rasmila Awal felt on that fateful afternoon cannot be measured on any scale.
Rasmila had gone to a nearby shop before the noon, leaving her two children, 10-year-old Sonia and four-month-old Sonit, at home. Soniya was watching a Hindi serial on the tv and baby Sonit was asleep.
Suddenly the home started swaying violently and cracks started to appear on the walls. Sonia ran outside, but realised that her brother was still inside. She returned, picked up her brother and started running outside. But the house had started to crumble by then, and she could not move her trapped feet. She held her brother tightly against her chest.
A wooden cupboard fell over Sonia and she lost hold of her brother, and she does not remember what happened after that. Rasmila rushed back to see her house coming down, her feet trembled and she wanted to cry out but no sound came out.

Update 01:57 UTC : Nepal unlikely to see schools reopened as per government time-frame
The government of Nepal has postponed the reopening date of its schools to May 29, 15 days later than the previous date but the schools are unlikely to follow the order due to the devastated structures and lack of open spaces for temporary facilities.
Durbar high school is the oldest school in Nepal where top bureaucrats and political leaders completed their high school education. The school is almost completely destroyed, with little hope of restoration.
The headmaster of the school, Hem Chandra Mahato said, "The officials from the district education office are coming and we are planning to make a temporary facility."
The south wall of the library hall of the more than one and a half century old school fell down and killed 11 people during the April 25 quake.
"Though the restructuring and rebuilding of the school is fully dependent on government funding, we can begin schooling temporarily in the support of local people and guardians," said the headmaster, adding "We have sufficient space behind the building so we have no problem installing a temporary learning center."

Update 01:07 UTC : Life on the Edge in Rural Nepal (Video from the New York Times)
On a steep cliff northeast of Kathmandu, one family is forced to live outside, mourning the dead and worrying that rains from the coming monsoons will create more deadly landslides.
Update : Many Nepalis working overseas are returning to help rebuild lives and homes
When he went to work in Malaysia four months ago, Ram Hari Katwal had everything most Nepali men dream of: a house, a wife and two little children.
Today, he has lost almost everything. His wife Hima and one-year-old son Bikram are dead, his house is gone. But his five-year-old Biraj survived.
"I could not see my wife and son before they were cremated," said Katwal with a faraway look. "I wanted to return home immediately but it took me two weeks to get permission from my company."
Katwal, 26, is now with his son in a temporary shelter made of timber and tin he salvaged from the ruins of his house in Melamchi of Sindhupalchok. He has decided not to return to Malaysia. It was only last year that Katwal built a house with a bank loan, and he went to Malaysia to pay it off.
"I have not paid off my loan yet," he says. "And I now have to take more loans to rebuild my house, the government is never going to give us enough."

Update : Nepali news site says missing American helicopter has been located. 6 U.S. marines and 2 Nepali soldiers are fine.
Update 12:00 UTC: 74 have died in Nepal, and 2374 injuries because of the aftershock. The death toll has thus risen to 121. It seems as though a lot of people were outside of their buildings in Dolakha and Sindhupalchok which has reduced the death toll from what was expected.

Update 04:39 UTC : An update from Anup Kaphle
Bungamati is a medieval village about 45 minutes outside of Kathmandu. The settlement here is so old that some date it back to 6th century Licchavi dynasty, known as the "golden period" in Nepal's history, during which dozens of temples and monuments were built.
Today, most of that is gone. What remains is a gentle fighting spirit among its residents who are quietly rebuilding their lives. 15 days since the earthquake, the locals here, aided by a group of students from Kathmandu University, are building shelters from corrugated steel sheets and bamboos, structures that will for now keep them away from incessant rain that has been descending upon Kathmandu for the last three nights.
I asked the man who is leading the rebuilding task here how much of the rebuilding support came from the government.
"What? We have a government?" he said.
Januki Mali, 45, worked as a janitor at a school in the village. Only half of her home stands now, the other half looking as if an angry demon smashed it to the ground with a giant hammer. Today, the students from Kathmandu University built this one-room home, so they at least they have a roof to sleep under while they work on building a more permanent home.

Update May 12, 04:24 UTC : Lessons from Sichuan (a mustread article by Kuanda Dixit)
The epicenter of the 7.9 magnitude earthquake was 80 km to the north-west, and everything swayed in the capital. Some older buildings crumbled. The tremors were felt 1,000km away in neighbouring countries. The airport was closed for a day, and then became the staging area for a massive relief operation. Highways were blocked by landslides, delaying emergency rescue and relief to the mountain villages. Up to 80 per cent of the buildings in poorer rural areas near the epicentre were destroyed, a UNESCO World Heritage Site was severely damaged. Strong aftershocks, some above 6 magnitude, kept hitting the area for weeks afterwards.
Sound familiar? That isn’t a description of the 25 April Nepal Earthquake, but the one that struck China’s Sichuan Province exactly seven years ago this week at 11:30 AM on 12 May 2008. The earthquake hit scattered communities in a remote part of China that was largely untouched by the country’s economic boom, and killed about 100,000 people, injuring nearly 400,000. An estimated 7 million people were left homeless.

Update 11:55 UTC : Why I had to return to a devastated country in crisis, a MustRead article by Carole Cadwalladr
It’s four days since a 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal and my connecting flight from Abu Dhabi is a sea of men, Nepalese workers from the Gulf returning…. well, returning to God knows what. There are tense, miserable faces in every row and in the seat behind, a man is getting quietly and then loudly drunk. “There is nothing left of my house. Nothing!” he says. His name is Navin and it’s his first trip home in 22 months from the United Arab Emirates, where he works as a waiter “earning very small money”. His wife, children, parents, brothers and sisters are now all homeless.
The scale of the devastation is almost beyond comprehension. The latest figures are 3,000 dead (though this will rise – it’s nearly 8,000 as I write), hundreds of thousands of homes destroyed and a third of the population directly affected. But on the drive from the airport, the only thing much different from when I left Kathmandu less than a week before the earthquake is the lack of traffic. But it’s a different story at the Summit hotel, a low-rise, slightly old-fashioned affair set amid flowery gardens.
Since I left, it has become ground zero of the international aid community and the car park is rammed with 4x4s, the restaurant heaving with people in agency polo shirts – MSF, WEP, UN – and dozens of evacuated climbers and trekkers camping out in orange expedition tents in the gardens. But through the melee, I spot someone I know: Nick Talbot.

Update 17:24 UTC or 00:25 Nepal Time : 23:11 - WILL THERE BE A BIG EARTHQUAKE @ MIDNIGHT ?
We know from Sonam Tsering LAMA that rumours are currently circulating in Kathmandu that a new strong earthquake would happen at midnight. If you know one of the people spreading the rumor, please give his name to the police that he will be get a big fine as EARTHQUAKES CANNOT BE PREDICTED. Even if you feel an aftershock at midnight, the rumor is still not true. Science is not capable today of telling us when exactly and earthquake will happen, where it will happen (precise location) and how strong it will be in other words RUMORS ARE NONSENSE + ARE CRIMINAL. rumours
If people start to argue about the rumor being probably true, take the person before giving him/her up to the police to the Nepal Seismology Center and ask them whether what we write is true. THANK YOU
For those interested in the subject, you may like this video which tells the present truth about the prediction theory.

Update 12:28 UTC : Bad weather in Kathmandu valley
Update 12:17 UTC : The last aftershock was located in Kavre and measured M4.2, less than many people thought. The shaking depends on many factors like location of the epicenter, hypocenter depth (breaking point inside the earth), propagation of the shaking waves etc.
Update 09:51 UTC : Still NO specific information about the latest aftershock. The NSC server seems to be down because of the heavy traffic and international agencies have not yet reported the aftershock yet? If you have felt the shaking please let us know. Update 09:23 UTC : The article excerpt below is the first Anup Kaphle article for Buzzfeed.com since he stopped working for the Washington Post. Article is a MustRead.
How Helicopters Are Helping – And Hampering – Aid Relief In Nepal
About 50 fresh recruits stood in the sun at a tiny makeshift military base in western Gorkha district, the epicenter of the earthquake that struck Nepal two weeks ago, some of them drenched in sweat, some leaning against sacks of blankets and rice waiting to be airlifted to the most remote villages in the district.
The Palungtar base has more than 2,000 tons of supplies — blankets sent via trucks from India, sacks of rice, beaten rice, instant noodles, iodized salt, vegetable oil, tarpaulins, and military tents — but only an invisible fraction of that is being flown to needy villages every day.
The reason? There simply aren’t enough helicopters.

Update 09:17 UTC : A Facebook Anup Kaphle update which speaks for itself.
Past week, the country moved from rescue to relief phase. This week, there are conversations about how relief phase needs to end because enough food has been sent to affected areas.
One thing people in the cities do not realize is that food being sent to any place where it is either hoarded in a depot by local groups or stored in makeshift bases by the army doesn't mean those who suffered from the quake have access to them.
The other important thing: Very little is being done to provide proper shelters to people who have lost homes. One woman today showed me how she got half of a tarpaulin. What do you do with half a tarp?
Monsoon is six weeks away and people in villages like Laprak are using 12x15 tarps to provide shelter for a family of eight including a two-month old, five goats and a cow. Soon, rain will wash away mud, beat down the tarps, making living in these circumstances impossible. Meanwhile, there are heavy-duty military tents sitting in storage.
It's cold, it's raining and this is how some of the poorest people are living.

Update 08:59 UTC : Tourism in Chitwan suffers due to quake
The tourism sector in Chitwan has suffered damage due to effect of the April 25 earthquake and aftershocks since then.
The major tourism destinations in the district namely Sauraha, Patihani, Jagatpur, and Meghauli have no movement though hundreds of foreign tourists used to visit these places daily in this season.
First Vice-chairman of the Regional Hotel Association, Sauraha, Suman Ghimire said tourists bookings which used to be around 70 percent hotels in Chitwan is just five per cent at present. Of them, two per cent are domestic tourists. Almost all bookings were canceled after the quake.

Update 10:52 UTC : Ruptured zone as reported by the IPGP
Based on geological cross-sections, crustal structure model, and the preliminary seismological data available few days after the main shock, it appears that the earthquake has ruptured a piece of the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT). The rupture started at the epicenter, about 80km to the northwest of Kathmandu and propagated eastward for about 130 km, rupturing the area directly located under the capital city of Nepal.

Update 08:44 UTC : British helicopters NOT allowed to enter Nepal !
The government has not issued its permission for three British Chinook choppers to fly to Kathmandu from New Delhi, carrying relief materials for earthquake victims.
Officials said the British aircraft larger than the MI-17 would face hurdles flying in Nepal’s difficult terrain. Some national security concerns are also responsible for the halt, said a government official. The country’s only international airport is overcrowded with planes from India, China and the United States.
“As far as I know, the government has not given clearance to the British aircraft to fly to Kathmandu,” said Nepal Army spokesman Jagadish Chandra Pokhrel.
A British Embassy statement said three Chinook helicopters would be made operational in Kathmandu as part of the UK’s relief effort. “These advanced helicopters are able to carry vital relief supplies to isolated high altitude areas across the country which are currently (Source eKantipur)

Update 07:47 UTC : At least 11 of Kathmandu valley’s apartment buildings unsafe
Of the 16 apartment buildings assessed by government teams so far, 11 have been declared “unsafe” for immediate use while four have been marked “safe”.
The Department of Urban Development and Building (DUDB) that has been carrying out safety assessment of high-rise apartments said Indreni Apartment and Bhat Bhateni Apartment at Bhatbhateni, Oriental Apartment at Dhapasi and TCH Towers at Panipokhari got minor damage from the April 25 earthquake and are safe for stay.
The Park View Horizon Apartment in Dhapasi, according to the DUDB, is the worst hit by the Great Earthquake and needs detailed investigation. According to the DUDB, 11 apartments have “cracks on wall”.
“Of the 16 apartments, there is need for in-depth investigation at one, four are safe while there are several cracks in 11 apartment units,” said Sagar Krishna Joshi, divisional engineer at the DUDB.

Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT) has said an estimated Rs 629 million would be required to rebuild its office buildings and roads damaged by the earthquake.
The amount, however, does not include cost to rehabilitate of Barabise-Tatopani section of Araniko Highway which is badly damaged by the earthquake as the Chinese government is already preparing to rebuild the section.
MoPIT has calculated the loss and damage of roads and other official infrastructures in current rates at around Rs 252 million.

Update 07:33 UTC : The road-repair and rescue detachment of China's armed police forces have restored a cross- border highway linkling earthquake-hit Nepal with China, Chinese and Nepali officers said on Friday.
Officers of the Chinese armed police forces told Xinhua that some 200 Chinese armed police personnel have jointed the reparation efforts since May 3.
The Chinese team has repaired 31 km of the severely damaged parts of the 114-km Araniko Highway, which connects with the China National Highway 318 to Lhasa, capital of China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
Traffic of the highway has been halted as the road was damaged at many locations since the April 25 earthquake, which has left more than 8,400 people dead in Nepal.
Extremely steep slopes on the sides of the road and the potential landslides have been posing threats to the Chinese team.
The team is expected to be stationed on the highway for more days on a maintenance mission. (Source Xinhua China)
Update 07:20 UTC : One of the strongest aftershocks so far happened in Eastern Nepal (towards Solo Khumbu). We tend to see this aftershock as an aftershock of the M6.7 earthquake as the epicenter is located in the periphery of the M6.7.
Often we see reports in local and international publications that the M5.0 aftershock made not any more damage. This is not true. An M5 aftershock in a heavily damaged area will make more damage. The location of the epicenter is far away from Kathmandu and because of the overall situation almost nobody will ever know how much additional damage / injuries have been inflicted.

Update : ER expects a lot of fatalities. How many : too soon to make an estimate. Massive landslides alone can count for many. At least one good thing : the earthquake happened during daylight and in the Nepali spring = less victims
A cruel earthquake happened in the pre-Himalaya ranges of Nepal just in between Kathmandu and Pokara. We expected a lot of devastation and massive landslides
