- It is getting more and more interesting again (Thanks Goz for pushing us). One of the strongest earthquakes occurred on Thursday, a M2.6 which was felt by the islanders. This stronger earthquake indicated still the strength at the +20 km layer. The other earthquakes are occurring in the shallower 10 km depth zone, but these are weak to very weak. What happened the last couple of days has almost the same patters than during the last serious swarm episode (2 layers - the strongest ones at +20, the weaker ones at the 10 km level)
2012-11-12 19:28 UTC
- Only 2 earthquakes so far the last 2 days, but the location of the epicenters is showing that something is really going on. We would not be surprised at all if a new activity period would start. Both epicenters are located in the direct Sabinosa area, exactly the same area where the last swarm started. The title has not been removed because of this.
2012-12-10 23:58 UTC
- Rather lot of activity today (thank you ER reader Gos for informing us). In only 35 minutes various vcery weak volcanic earthquakes below the center of the island gradually shifting to the south. Depths like the latest swarm. The next 48 hours will indicate whether this was a unique event or wether a new episode will start.
2012-12-07 23:54 UTC
- 5 earthquakes since December 3, most of them very weak but also shallower than the ones from last week.
- It looks more and more that IGN is abandoning his task as the CHIE seismogram shows often errors (more and more). We trust on them to keep all material in the best shape ...
2012-12-03 23:33 UTC
- More or less a status quo for the volcanic earthquakes. An average of only 1 a day.
2012-11-30 17:25 UTC
- 4 volcanic earthquakes since our last update. This time a couple stronger ones
- After a long time of absence in these page, a few words of Joke Volta (no, we have not divorced yet 🙂 )
Greet you all, readers of the ER-site
I am glad that there still exists an english version (E.R) for the volcanic news on the Hierro-island.
Since last spring I started up my facebook (give Joke a hug by becoming one of her friends on Facebook - Armand), in which I put the local spanish comment about the monitoring of the seismic events on the islands. This all mixed up with my personal artistic news, the little activity that shows the volcano on the island, made, that you did not heard from me a long time.
But..I am happy to see, that there is still an interest in what is happening on the island.Let’s see and wait, what will come.Untill now there are still quakes, not so much as earlier, but there is still activity below the island…But lately it looks that we can celebrate a kind of a relax, which offer us to pay atention to other things also, and in my case my art-work, which surely received some influence from the whole volcanic crisis we lived down here.
2012-11-26 17:56 UTC
- NO activity whatsoever since the last 2 days - this update especially for Suzanne who thinks that we are not following up El Hierro anymore :))
2012-11-24 23:54 UTC
- 3 volcanic earthquakes today (a lot compared to the last couple of days), but all very deep.
2012-11-23 15:24 UTC
- We continue following eventual events on the island, but the last couple of weeks all activity calmed down. The last 5 days, we only could find 2 volcanic earthquakes below the island
2012-11-18 17:25 UTC
- Volcanic earthquakes and a couple of normal earthquakes in between November 14 and November 18
2012-11-13 17:52 UTC
- Volcanic earthquakes in between November 10 and November 13
2012-11-10 16:02 UTC
- 1 M1.7 earthquake at a depth of 31 km at 03:07 UTC this morning
- CHIE graph is "alive and kicking" again 🙂 - Thank you IGN and Telefonica
2012-11-08 15:00 UTC
- After a week of no seismographic data from CHIE, at EL Hierro we contacted IGN for an explanation. Due to the very severe weather El Hierro has suffered in the past days, the signal from the seismograph to the IGN was lost.
IGN is currently working with Telefonica (Spain's biggest telecommunications company) to establish the signal again. There was no comment on when the signal will be back again or if the lost data will be recovered.
- For the moment the graphs will continue showing a flat wave line and a blue colour in the spectrum.
2012-11-06 17:15 UTC
- No more activity the last couple of days ! Totally over ?
2012-11-04 22:39 UTC
- Another earthquake at 18:49 UTC Magnitude : 2.3 and Depth : 19 km
2012-11-04 18:21 UTC
- 1 volcanic earthquake M1 at a depth of 10 km so far today
2012-11-03 15:54 UTC
- 1 volcanic earthquake so far today : Magnitude : 2.3 Depth : 19 km
- ER Reader Daniel commented yesterday that : " The El-Golfo-stations show a strong drop down. 4 cm in 1-2 days! The western-most station is the only one with a slight increase." These were the readings from yesterday (IGN). Today the values returned to "normal"
2012-11-02 18:25 UTC
- Yesterday a M1.9 earthquake at a depth of 18 km
- earthquakes so far today
2012-11-01 15:43 UTC
- No action at all at El Hierro
- Some of you do know that i traveled to China the second week of October. I made the following trip : Beijing, Xi'An (terracotta army), Chengdu (panda's), LiJiang (Dragon snow mountain), Zongdian (also called Shangri La in little Tibet), Kunming (capital Yunnan), Guilan (bobble mountains) and Hong Kong. This trip was not related to this site on the exception that i was travelling 5 days within Yunnan, a regular earthquake scene. The pictures i have taken during this trip can be viewed here.
2012-10-31 19:13 UTC
- 3 volcanic earthquakes at various depths so far today.
2012-10-30 23:17 UTC
- 3 volcanic earthquakes so far today. The 2 last ones were only 30 seconds apart from each other and were quiet shallow at 8 and 9 km
2012-10-30 09:49 UTC
- 1 non El Hierro related tectonic earthquake today (in between Tenerife and Gran Canaria)
- 2 volcanic deeper earthquakes during the late hours yesterday
2012-10-29 09:40 UTC
- Nothing special to report this morning as there were no more volcanic earthquakes after our latest update
- Julio del Castillo Vivero and Joke Volta went to the northern side of the island a few months ago. Julio, a young Spanish photographer recorded a lot of material which he is still assembling. Final product will be a documentary on the volcanic activity at El Hierro. For the video below (entitled : Sea of Clouds), Julio used more than 8000 images which he captured in 2 hours. The video shows in a great way a very special weather pattern at El Hierro.
2012-10-28 15:00 UTC
- We thank ER readers Robert (Canarias, Spain) Gerhardt (Germany) and Edward (British Columbia, Canada) for their kind donation
- 2 more earthquakes yesterday
- A bunch of earthquakes so far today including an extremely shallow one near the old eruption vent in the Las Calmas sea. So far it is only an isolated one and we will follow up activity later today to check out whether new shallow ones will occur in that area
2012-10-27 13:54 UTC
- Thanks to ER reader Peter (United Kingdom) for his kind donation
- Back home after a 3 week tour in China (earthquake rich provinces). During that time i was able to keep this site updated, however from hotel wifi, Facebook and Twitter could not be reached (Chinese censorship i guess - from cellular network, it worked). While travelling in "little Tibet" in the Yunnan province, cellular internet did not work. Probably for the same reasons as there were enough antennas to pass the signal.
- At least we had no new crisis while i was in China as continuously updating a site from a laptop would have been a strenuous work 🙂
- Today the volcanic earthquakes restarted including a weird non-volcanic 59 km deep earthquake (this earthquake happened in the hot solid mantle of the earth). 2 relatively shallow volcanic earthquakes earlier today :
2012-10-24 15:42 UTC
- Yesterday and so far today, no volcanic earthquakes at all. Will the volcano become totally silent ?
2012-10-22 14:32 UTC
-NO earthquakes so far today
2012-10-21 23:59 UTC
- 2 more earthquakes today :
2012-10-21 14:13 UTC
- 3 volcanic earthquakes at different depth so far today
2012-10-20 23:59 UTC
- We really appreciate the donation of ER reader Tina (Switzerland) for her kind donation

2012-10-14 16:23 UTC
- We thank ER reader Patricia (United Kingdom) for her kind donation
- an additional weak earthquake yesterday evening
- 2 volcanic earthquakes so far today. The very shallow weak earthquake at a depth of 3 km was probably generated due to deformation stress
2012-10-13 15:52 UTC
- A last earthquake yesterday evening. M1.2 at 18 km
- 2 earthquakes so far today :
2012-10-12 15:25 UTC
- Not too much to report today. Events are continuing in 2 layers.
- 4 volcanic earthquakes so far today
2012-10-11 14:26 UTC
- 1 more earthquake yesterday at a depth of 27 km - M1.5
- Only 2 earthquakes so far today, both M1.0 and both at a depth of 22 km
2012-10-10 14:17 UTC
- We thank multiple donor Jan from Denmark for his new donation

2012-10-08 23:54 UTC
- 2 more earthquakes in the afternoon and evening
- We have archived the activity from September 12 until September 30 (link at the bottom of this page). This part has been cut from this page.
2012-10-08 06:24 UTC
- One more earthquake to mention yesterday evening, a M1.1 at a depth of 14 km.
- 2 earthquakes so far today. a M1.4 at 22 km and a M1.4 at 10 km
2012-10-07 18:42 UTC
- We truly appreciate the donations of ER readers Christian (Germany) and Patrick (California, USA)
- Only 4 more earthquakes at the since this morning. Always fascinating how volcano seismicity is behaving. A lot of earthquakes in a narrow timeframe and suddenly it stops again for many hours.
- The last 4 quakes were shallow (even one at 8 km), but not shallow enough to become meaningful.
2012-10-07 06:36 UTC
- 3 more earthquakes to finish the day. When we made the latest update yesterday, IGN still had a backlog. Magnitudes and depths : 0.9 @ 11 km, 1.3 @ 10 km and 1.4 @ 10 km.
- a lot of action today at both El Hierro (volcanic) and Tenerife (probably tectonic).
- The many Tenerife earthquakes occurred at various deep origins in the (hotter) solid mantle of the earth. This can go on for some time. People living at Tenerife do not have to fear the Teide will erupt soon (based on today's events).
- Both phenomena are NOT linked
- if we omit the Tenerife data (very weak earthquakes), we have counted already 9 earthquakes today
2012-10-06 23:54 UTC
- a total of 20 earthquakes so far today! The last set of earthquakes was mainly shallow. Too early to call it a swarm. The next 12 hours will be telling us more.
2012-10-06 22:01 UTC
- We want to thank ER readers Robert (Oregon, USA) and Susanne (Florida, USA) for their kind donations for this site
- And another 4 in the 14 to 20 km layer
2012-10-06 14:27 UTC
- We want to thank ER reader Sue (United Kingdom) for het kind donation for this site
- 3 new ones in the shallower compartment have to be added.
- The M2.8 earthquake is a rather unusual in between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, closest to Los Lobos Island (see map below). We assume that this earthquake has a tectonic origin.
2012-10-06 07:33 UTC
- A lot more action this morning. 8 earthquakes so far, some at a depth of 10 km and others in the 20 to 22 km layer. Most of the quakes happened in between 01:16 and 01:45 at a depth of 10 km. The graph has calmed down again and there is no reason to believe that another swarm has started
- A very weak M1.6 quake occurred just a few km from Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. As the hypocenter was at 26 km and the Magnitude weak, only some animals may have felt it
- The vertical GPS deformation data show all a deflation of nearly a cm. (REST, PINA and FRON)
2012-10-05 23:13 UTC
- We appreciate the donation od ER reader Angelica (Germany)
- 2 more earthquakes this afternoon and evening.
2012-10-05 07:21 UTC
- 3 earthquakes during the evening hours, respectively : M1.1 @ 22 km, M0.9 @ 21 km and M1.1 @ 10 km.
- 3 so far today, nothing special but seismicity continues on a daily basis which is different than a couple of months ago where we had periods of no volcanic earthquakes at all. The 4th earthquake being a tectonic earthquake in between Tenerife and Gran Canaria (these tectonic earthquakes are going on for some time now with weak earthquakes on a weekly frequency. Depth is usually in between 20 and 30 km.
- GPS deformations : New data now. La Restinga up for almost a cm. , stabilisation at El Pinar and 1 cm up at Frontera after a sharp decline of more than 2 cm yesterday.
2012-10-04 09:25 UTC
- 3 earthquakes so far today. We know earthquake data only is quiet boring, but this is the only way to follow up this volcanic process. All 3 earthquakes occurred in a matter of 4 minutes and at the shallower depths.
- GPS deformations : We thank Dr. Sagiya for extending the vertical deformation scale to 12 cm compared to 10 cm a few days ago. We are however not sure about some recent data as we have still no x axis detailed time scale and as we have to feeling that nothing has changed the last couple of days. To avoid confusing people, we have taken screenshots today, which we will compare with data tomorrow.
2012-10-03 23:26 UTC
- 4 more earthquakes during the evening hours, bringing the total to 14 volcanic earthquakes today.
2012-10-03 16:59 UTC
- 3 more since our latest update. The 14:56 one being a relatively strong one at 11 km depth and close to Sabinosa (the shallower layer).
2012-10-03 12:30 UTC
- 4 more earthquakes during the morning hours, mostly in the deeper layers.
2012-10-03 10:24 UTC
- 3 earthquakes so far today (see below)
- GPS info from the university of Nagoya, Japan becomes hard to read as the vertical deformation parameters of Restinga, Pinar and Frontera are near or over the extremities of the graph. We will ask Prof. Sagiya whether he can do something about this. We hope he can, as this deformation resource has always been very important.
2012-10-02 13:36 UTC
- 3 more earthquakes during the morning hours. Various depths.
2012-10-02 06:18 UTC
- The volcano was very active during the evening hours. 6 earthquakes were added to the list during the last 4 hours of the day bringing the total yesterday to 17. Depths between 13 and 9 km.
- Only 2 so far this morning. A M1.1 at 11 km depth and a M1.0 also at 11 km depth.
2012-10-01 22:39 UTC
- 6 more earthquakes during the afternoon and evening, mostly at shallower depths
2012-10-01 09:18 UTC
- The day ended yesterday with 2 more volcanic earthquakes. One with a Magnitude of M1.3 at a depth of 10 km and one at a depth of 28 km with a Magnitude of 1.0
- The day has started with more activity (see below)
- GPS deformations (vertical) : Only Frontera shows a new value today. The new UR (Ultra-Rapid) value is approx. 1 cm less than yesterday.
