Update 17:11 UTC : We are happy to report that a mother and her baby have been rescued out of a collapsed house.
Update 17:09 UTC : The bell tower of St Augustine church in Amatrice has now collapsed too. The Church was almost completely devastated by the August 24 earthquake.
Update 17:04 UTC : The mayor of Teramo says : "we are left to ourselves" as aid and rescue has a lot of difficulties to reach the small villages due to the thick layer of snow. So far only additional damage is reported (from the already severely damaged August 24 earthquake)
Update 11:12 UTC : Some reports are mentioning collapsed walls but so far no reports of injuries or fatalities.
Update 11:07 UTC : Local media reports that the already damaged rubble from Amatrice and surroundings (August 24 earthquake) is further reduced to rubble. Images are showing that almost NOTHING has been cleared since August 24!
Update 10:58 UTC : The same epicenter region was very hard hit with devastating damage in August 2016. A strong aftershock in October generated additional damage. The entire region has not yet found stability again (and will never reach it as 2 plates are separating from each other).
Update 10:53 UTC : The Rome subway (lines A and B) have been stopped as a precautionary measure
Update 10:48 UTC : NO reports of serious damage as yet. The (Ansa) image shows the situation in the earthquake area.
Update 10:34 UTC : The Magnitude of the first earthquake has been decreased to 5.1 by INGV . The last one had a Magnitude of M5.4 - same hypocenter depth + a whole bunch of aftershocks.
Update 10:26 UTC : A new earthquake happened shortly ago. It was felt a little stronger in Rome and surroundings. Preliminary data show a Magnitude of M5.5. The many strong aftershocks are a returning pattern in the Apennines.
Update 10:20 UTC : The mayor of Ascoli Piceno (close to the epicenter) main concern is getting to the small villages in breaking the wall of snow! Electricity has already been jeopardized by the snowfall and then the earthquake on top of it. He also said that he had not received any reports of damage so far. Another concern he has is that the weight of snow combined with eventual damage of the earthquake can worsen the impact.
Update 10:20 UTC : Schools in Rieti en surroundings have been stopped until further notice.
Update 10:19 UTC : The earthquake was well felt in Rome and Florence
Update 10:16 UTC : An additional misery for an earthquake at this time of the year is the snow in the mountains as you can see on the image below
Update 10:04 UTC : INGV (Italy) data
INGV expects strong shaking in a radius of approx. 25 km around the epicenter.
