Update October 28 -13:59 UTC : Updated misery numbers at the time of reporting : 508 fatalities, 2203 injured and 12,000 houses collapsed. Main reason of all the misery: bad building methods as well as NOT following the building codex.
Update 15:43 UTC : Compared to Chinese earthquake statistics those of Pakistan and Afghanistan cannot be called statistics but only chaotic partial information. We are nearing our eartlier estimate that the total number of fatalities would be within the 500 to 1000 frame.
Update 08:41 UTC : The total death toll stood at 336 with at least 253 people killed in Pakistan and at least 83 more in Afghanistan, according to official reports from the two countries. More than 2,000 people have been injured.
Thousands spent the night outdoors in near-freezing temperatures reluctant to go back inside for fear of aftershocks, Pakistani media reported on early on Tuesday.
"Rescue work is ongoing, and tents, blankets and sleeping mats are being provided," Latif ur Rehman, a Pakistani disaster management official, told Reuters from the northwestern city of Peshawar.
Pakistan's military and civilian authorities dispatched several helicopters to affected areas to assess damage and run rescue operations, the National Disaster Management Authority said.
Update October 27 - 08:35 UTC : This video describes the current situation best. Hard to give the exact number of the victims as a lot of them will be counted in Taliban dominant areas where SAR personnel is not accepted. The golden hours are currently running. Every hour passing will decrease the chance that someone will be freed alive from below the rubble.
Update 21:56 UTC : The death toll has further risen t0 338 and will keep climbing as SAR groups reach gradually more villages
Important update 18:01 UTC : At last 218 people have been killed in Pakistan and Afghanistan so far. Unfortunately the death toll will continue to rise the coming days and hours. ER expects a death toll in between 500 and 1000, this based on the current data. The current numbers do include only 18 fatalities from Afghanistan. As the epicenter of the quake was below Afghanistan and as telecommunications are still disturbed in remote areas, we expect the Afghanistan toll to rise considerably tomorrow.
Current details for Pakistan :
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata 191
Punjab 5
Azad Jammu Kashmir 1
Gilgit Balitistan 3
Update 15:49 UTC : - Casualties reported in Swat, Bajaur Agency, Kallar Kahar, Sargodha, Kasur, Malakand.
- Communications services disrupted in Islamabad, Peshawar
Update 13:58 UTC : The death toll could climb in coming days because communications are down in much of the remote mountainous region.
Repartition: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata 121, Punjab 5, Azad Jammu Kashmir 1 and Gilgit Balitistan 3
Update 13:56 UTC : At least 130 people killed in Pakistan due to building collapses, landslides and stampedes (Pakistani source).
Update 13:54 UTC : Over 100 deaths reported from Pakistan with Bajaur being worst hit.
Update 12:42 UTC : 73 people are confirmed killed at the moment (18 Afghanistan and 55 Pakistan). A Pakistan newspaper wrote this headline which we confirm as accurate : "Hundreds feared dead"
Update 11:44 UTC : We fear that helping those who need it most will go terribly wrong (again) as most of the most damaged area is already struck by sectarion and religious wars. Official aid is often refused in these (mostly Taliban) areas. This is true for both Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Update 11:26 UTC : New numbers have been given : at least 64 dead (52 in Pakistan en 12 in Afghanistan). Hundreds of people have been injured
Update 11:06 UTC : At least 30 people killed in Pakistan alone. 12 more in Afghanistan (12 schoolgirls have been killed in Afghan city of Talooqan trying to escape the earthquake, head of provincial disaster agency said.)
Update 10:55 UTC : At least 20 people killed.
16 dead across Pakistan
Six people, including children, were killed in Swat, while four people were killed in the Bajaur tribal region after buildings collapsed in the area.
An eight-year-old child was killed in Kallar Kahar, where from one casualty was also reported from Kasur after the roof of a house collapsed.
A 14-year-old child died in the Islamgarh area of Azad Jammu and Kashmir's Mirpur region after a school wall collapsed.
A wall collapsed in Sargodha, killing one woman and injuring 10 people, while three are injured in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Five people were killed in Chitral. another person was reported killed in Raja Bazaar, Rawalpindi.
At least 194 injured were brought to Swat's Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital, which does not have adequate medical facilities.
More than 100 wounded have been admitted to Peshawar's Lady Reading Hospital.
Tremors have been felt in major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Kohat and Malakand.
Rescue 1122 has been put on high alert in Punjab. The disaster response force is on standby and a code red has been imposed, Director General Rescue Punjab Retd Brig Dr Ashraf Zia said. Rescue 1122 Spokesman Jam Sajjad said there were no reports of any deaths in Lahore.
Communication services have been disrupted in Islamabad, where walls swayed back and forth and people poured out of office buildings in a panic, reciting verses from the Holy Quran.
A building has also reportedly collapsed in Peshawar. Several mud huts collapsed in Balochistan's Zhob district.
Update 10:49 UTC : This is what we fear the most. LANDSLIDES who can devastate whole villages.
Update 10:43 UTC : The number of fatalities reported so soon after the earthquake is very bad news. Most of the very strong shaken area is very remote and we expect that many more victims maybe a reality. Let's hope that we are wrong.
Important update 09:38 UTC : At least 14 people were killed across Pakistan.
Picture of a showroom in India's Punjab
Update 10:10 UTC : Kunduz, the area which was shortly taken over by the Taliban a few weeks ago is inside the very strong shaking area.
Update 10:05 UTC : Based on the USGS Pager about 160,000 people will have been exposed to a MMI VII shaking or a very strong shaking.
Update 09:41 UTC : Professor Max Wyss, who specializes in theoretical prognoses of injuries and fatalities expects : Injuries: 0 to 30 Fatalities: none. ER does not share this positive outcome and expects this earthquake at least to be a deadly one.
Update 09:35 UTC : USGS has just created his theoretical shaking maps and this looks very very bad. A vast area would have been exposed to a very strong shaking which will mean a lot of devastation. The yellow area on the map can be considered as extremely dangerous for damage, injuries and even fatalities.
Update 09:31 UTC : Normally these deep earthquakes are not generating a lot of damage up to a Magnitude of 7, but this earthquake is far more powerful and therefor we expected at least dome major secondary damage, mainly due to landslides. Depending on the time of shaking, we also think that houses maybe in danger, hopefully only for cracks and not collapsed.
Update 09:22 UTC : A massive deep earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region. Serious secondary damage is not to be excluded due to landslides.
