Dangerous earthquake below Northern Sumatra, Indonesia
Local BMKG reports however M6.0 at a depth of 84 km (vs 37 km USGS)
Epicenter 33km SSW of Reuleuet following USGS preliminary reports
Lets hope that the BMKG depth of the earthquake is right as otherwise damage can be expected.
84 km depth means only a light to very weak shaking but in a very wide radius.
The earthquake occurred at 05:47 local time.
ER considers BMKG as a very good seismological agency and hopes that BMKG is right with the below map.
Important Update Jan. 2207:16 UTC : The good news we expected to confirm today is unfortunately bad news. A 9 year old was crushed by the rumble of her house and died. 7 other people were injured. Tens of houses collapsed and a lot of people have been moved to temporary shelters as their houses were damaged. A mosk did also collapsed.
An aftershock measuring M5.1 at a depth of only 12 km occurred later but normally the people must have been living on the street then.
As the girl was from Pidie which is located at the edge of the VII MMI intensity map from USGS (upper map), we believe that the USGS data may have been better this time.
Update January 22 19.00 UTC: Recent news from Indonesia give a total number of 15 injured persons from this quake. 5 of them were seriously injured. All of them are from Mane district close to the epicenter.
Japan, Honshu earthquake
JMA Japan reports a max. 4 JMA intensity at Kamisu-shi Mizoguchi only.
ER considers 5+ as a potentially dangerous intensity.
Local seismological agency : M5.2 at 20 km depth
Moderate but dangerous shallow earthquake in Iran, Kerman province
ISC Teheran reports a Magnitude of Mn5.5 at a depth of only 10 km.
ER calls this earthquake moderately dangerous. Damage (even serious damage) cannot be excluded.
22 Km of Sirch, kerman, 24 Km of Shahdad, kerman, 38 Km of Kerman, Kerman
Iran is known to be vulnerable for damage if greater than M5.0
As it is night right now in Iran, we do not expect detailed assessments before the morning hours.
The earthquake occurred at 23:19 Iran time.
ER calls the village of Bagh-E-Almas as the most dangerous. This village (see image below) is only at 6 km from the epicenter. It is a farming community
Update 09:41 UTC : GDACS reports that 301 people are living within a radius of 5 km from the epicenter. 1151 people live within a radius of 10 km.
Update 09:48 UTC : Rescue teams have been send to the greater Sirch area.
Update Jan. 22 08:26 UTC : After reviewing the many sources in Iran, we are happy to report that no serious damage has been inflicted.

Useful information to read this daily earthquake list
This earthquake list covers important earthquakes in the world. If a more detailed page is present, the earthquake line will be linked to the detailed page. The multi-source approach has been setup to compare values as seismology is not an exact science and needs a lot of calculations. The reference for the time zone is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, also called GMT). Color explanation if we add some details above the list : green color = NOT dangerous for damage or injuries, orange color = MODERATE risk for damage or injuries, red color = CONSIDERABLE risk for damage or injuries

Dog's acting strange tonight. Any seismic activity expected in central Ohio?
Until now behavior of animals have no confirmed prediction effect, unfortunately - otherwise a lot of people's lives would have been saved.
Just to say what an excellent service you provide
Kind regards
Michael
Thank you Michael for your kind words, we appreciate it
