USGS has downgraded the aftershock to Magnitude 3.8.

A rather strong aftershock of magnitude 3.9 was felt few minutes ago. This followed an rather intense sequence of minor aftershocks. Another M2.8 quake was detected just one minute later

A moderate M4.2 earthquake was felt in most parts of the Los Angeles area on thursday. The quake was centered in San Fernando, abour 32 kilometers north of Los Angeles. Although the quake occurred in a shallow depth of only 8 kilometers, no damage is expected!

The epicenter was located very close to the epicenter of the Northridge quake 1994, but likely originated from another fault. USGS calculated a strike-slip focal mechanism.

Several minor aftershocks have been detected within the first minutes, some of them weakly felt in the direct vicinity of the epicenter.

  • Anaheim - Momentary (2 second) rattle
  • Simi Valley - 1 or 2 seconds, very light but noticeable.

  • Santa Monica - It shakes at 04:45 a.m. Again around 07:00 a.m. Always shakes on a wave from East to West. My living-room and Kitchen large windows face West. Movement comes from East side every single time going West like a large Ocean wave. Truly, I hate it and was reading a good book could not go to sleep yet.

  • El Segundo - It lasted only about 2 seconds. It woke me up from sleep because my bed was shaking.
  • El Monte - Lasted about 10-15 seconds
  • Downtown Los Angeles - Less than 6 seconds
  • North Hollywood - Was asleep and woke up my shelves shook something fell over on the shelf and felt the aftershock
  • Los angeles - Mild rolling 10 secs no damage
  • 90032 - good strong jolt. shaking 2-5 seconds
  • Studio city - 4:30 AM on 7/30/20. Moderate shaking for 4-5 seconds and light shake again at 4:40 AM for 1-2 seconds.
  • Los angeles - It happened at 4:30 am! Very strong! I woke up!
  • Encino - Light shaking
  • Glendale - Moderate shaking
  • Los Angeles - 1 rip for a second. And then another for a couple seconds
  • Topanga CA - No damage
  • ENCINO CA - I felt moderate even shaking for about 10 seconds
  • Los Angeles - Felt a little shake, almost like a vibration for a few seconds.
  • California - 10
  • Burbank - The shaking took about a good 10 seconds .
  • Los Angeles - Very weak shaking
  • Sherman Oaks, CA - Shaking lasted about 5-6 seconds and our building shook
  • Los angeles - Wakened by several seconds of shaking at 0430. Pictures on wall askew. Have not looked further for damage. Milder slight shake at 0441.
  • LA Canada Flintridge - Standing in kitchen; felt a moderate jolt, then about 1 or 2 seconds later, another moderate jolt. Definitely heard it.
  • Los Angeles - Felt shaking for about 5 seconds. No obvious damage to property
  • Los angeles - I felt light shaking that woke me from a dream. Or I woke from a dream to the bed lightly shaking. Not sure how long but long enough to wonder if it was an earthquake and enough to make me look it up in the middle of the night.
  • Los Angeles - Several seconds, no damage as of yet
  • Agoura Hills - Just a few seconds.15 minutes ago. No damage
  • North hills - 15 second shake. This one was louder than normal. No damage.
  • Valencia - Probably 5 seconds. Woke me up asking 4:30ish
  • Culver City - Sharp, momentary jolt.
  • Los Angeles - A few seconds of light shaking, follows by a secondary, weaker and shorter one. No damage
  • West Los Angeles - A quick jolt, at approximately 4:30 a.m. PST this morning. Minor aftershock about 10 minutes later.
  • Commerce - I felt two movements, the first one last about 2 seconds, the second one last about 3 or 4 seconds. The earthquakes between one and the other one was about 2 seconds, so probably was just one earthquake felt like two movements
  • North Hollywood - I felt a strong jolt followed by shaking that felt like it lasted a long time. My guess is 10-20 seconds. Felt the after shock too.
  • los angeles - I felt like an airplane landing. The moment the wheels touch the track, during the touch down.
  • Studio City - I was in the bathroom clipping my nail when it shook. I jumped to the doorway, but then remembered that’s the worst place to be. I ran to my bed, where my husband was calm and held my hand. I have severe PTSD, since I was in the 1994 Northridge quake, and every time I feel even a small rumble, I’m back in 1994.
  • Northridge - Very weak shaking
  • Van nuys - No damage. Started with a jolt enough to wake me, but not my children, shook for a time, felt like 30 seconds, but could have been 15 seconds. For the time, I said now, but it was probably 10-20 minutes ago.
  • Pasadena - Weak shaking
  • Tarzana - The shaking lasted a few seconds.Scared my dog. No damage.
  • Los Angeles - Moderate shaking
  • Tarzana - Big jolt w light shaking for several seconds
  • Culver City - Strong 5 second jolt woke me up in Culver City
  • Los Angeles - More of a slight wobbling feeling, was sitting down in front of a monitor and I felt the ground slightly move and also saw my monitor wobble a bit even though I didn’t cause it.
  • Los Angeles - Earthquake at 4:29 am on 07/30/2020. Moderate shaking. 2 times shaking consecutive and total 7 seconds. Wake me up, my bed was shake and my cups on the table make a noise. Everything is ok, nothing has damages.
  • California - Moderate shaking
  • Los Angeles - On the 3rd floor of an apartment building, woke up to picture frames on the wall shaking and a couple small items fell off bed side table. Assuming no damage in the area. Lasted maybe 30 seconds... once awake and realized what was happening, but felt like much longer
  • West LA - I woke up @4:30a by a moderate shake. No damage. Lasted about 4-5 sec.
  • L.A. - very short sharp jolt, maybe 3-4 seconds long.
  • La Crescenta - Shaking woke me up, window rattled, cat growled
  • Los Angeles - 4:30 am strong rapid shaking lasting around five seconds . It was not a rolling sensation but a rapid shaking which is unusual.
  • PORTER RANCH - Moderate shaking
  • LA - Didn’t really ‘feel’ the shaking, mods so could hear all the items in my house rattling heavily for about 10 seconds.
  • Los Angeles - One strong jolt with a lot of noise. I wasn't even sure it was an earthquake; it felt and sounded like a truck had run into the house.
  • San Fernando - I was on my computer and with all the crap I have piled up in my tiny apartment, only a few small empty boxes fell down. A bit stronger & I would have had my own disaster. . .
  • Van Nuys - Shaking woke me up. Not sure how long it was. Aftershock came up from south. Could feel a single wave passing to the NorthEast
  • Los Angeles - At 4:30 am woke up because it felt like a hard impact to the building. The building shook for about 10 - 20 seconds. I live on the top floor (4th) in an Apartment building.
  • Boyle heights - Strong shaking
  • Canoga park - 2 to 3 second shaking felt this shaking was totally different then all others it shook the house from the roof instead of from the ground, i tought something from the roof of the house and side walls, no damage.
  • Granada Hills - Lasted about 10 seconds, first a jolt then another then a big shake.
  • Los Angeles, 90270 - About 5-10 seconds room was shaking
  • torrance - very very light shaking about 15 sec.more like my wife moving in bed slightly. I was fully awake reading the internet on my phone
  • Los Angeles CA - It felt like 6 seconds. No damage that I know of.
  • San Fernando - Felt around 0435 - 0440. Shaking was 2 jolts: the 1st was stronger about 5 seconds, the 2nd was about 10 seconds. 3rd floor Apt, was gentle rolling for the following 5 minutes or so. No damage. No power loss either and good thing, was on desktop PC all night writing a screenplay & Epicenter was directly below my chair!
  • Los Angeles brentw9od area - No damage. A startling but mild jolt.
  • Los Angeles - Shook our building, no damage. Strong one. Still awake feeling tremors
  • North Hollywood - Was sleeping felt a short strong jolt . Woke me up jumping from my bed. A lamp and mirror fell . Then felt the aftershock about 20 min later .
  • Los Angeles - I was up praying between 3-4 a.m. and felt the shaking on the 5th floor my apartment building.
  • Canoga Park - About 15 seconds of unusual moderate shaking. Not the normal rolling sensation, but fast rapid shaking. Probably because it was so shallow.
  • Marina Del Rey - One jolt, then a second milder shake
  • Pasadena - It was a jolt followed by slight rolling that moved from a north to east fashion and did not last long. Felt like a strike/slip and was over fairly quickly.
  • Los Angeles - Light shaking
  • Santa Monica - bed and windows shaking. woke me up
  • Sherman Oaks, CA - This happened at 6:49 AM. The jolt lasted About 3 seconds. It shook my closed door. I was lying in bed. I also felt the one that occurred at 4:30 AM this morning, which felt much stronger.
  • Los Angeles - I got woken up at around 4:30AM, feels like earthquake, then I thought it was someone slammed the door very hard. Tried going back to sleep at around 5:30AM, then woke up by earthquake again around 7am. So scary.

    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings.     Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.

    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
