Very Strong earthquake near Lone Pine, Central California - June 24, 2020

Have you felt the shaking? If Yes, tell us by using the I FELT IT form behind the earthquake or at the bottom of this page.

Update 18:19 UTC
The USGS Moment Tensor calculation show that this earthquake resulted from movement of a strike-slip fault (like Owens Valley) with some horizontal (normal) movement. This indicates that the rupture of the quake might have involved multiple small fault segments.

Update 18:07 UTC
A rather strong aftershock of Magnitude 4.6 followed at 17:59. Usually the strongest aftershocks in a sequence are 1 magnitude weaker than the mainshock. Therefore this can be considered as more or less the upper limit of aftershock size. However, there is also a certain (low) chance that stronger earthquakes follow in the next couple of days. The Owens Valley Fault Zone is the source of one of the largest quakes in Californian history: A Magnitude 7.9 quake in 1872.

Update 17:58 UTC
Weak shaking due to this earthquake was felt in Greater Los Angeles and Greater San Francisco Bay area. Moderate shaking was reported by people in Bakersfield and Fresno area. To the east the shaking area extended as far as Las Vegas. However, no damage is expected in these places. The highest intensities (VII to VIII) occurred near Lone Pine.

Update 17:50 UTC
The USGS updated the quake from 6.0 to Magnitude 5.8 after manual revision. It seems that the quake happened on the southern-most segment of the Owens Valley fault and thus could be triggered by the Ridgecrest earthquakes 2019.

A strong earthquake was felt in many parts of California and Nevada. The epicenter is located near Lone Pine north of Ridgecrest, the place of last year's M7.1 earthquake. A foreshock sequence of quakes up to M4.5 preceded the new quake in the last couple of days.
Earthquake-report.com expects minor damage in nearby towns.
