Update 15:43 UTC:  NO serious damage due to this or the M5.5 earthquake. Only slight damage like on the picture below.

Update 13:28 UTC:  Professor Max Wyss, who specialises in theoretical prognoses of injuries and fatalities expects : 0 to 50 injured people.

Update 10:31 UTC:  Good news so far : NO reported damage (but be aware that this is a very remote region in the Amazones lowland)

Update 10:28 UTC:  Shaking map with possible related damage from the natural disaster specialists at CATnews (Risklayer - CEDIM), Karlsruhe, Germany. Map generated by Andreas Schäfer.

Update 10:20 UTC:  We, at earthquake-report.com are receiving MMI shaking values of VII and even VIII which are indicating very strong felt shaking.

Update 10:20 UTC:  the main shock was followed by a strong M5.5 earthquake at intermediate depth closer to Quenca and Guyaquil

Update 10:18 UTC:  Although the epicenter region is only sparsely populated, the depth of the hypocenter (breaking point) will result in a much larger potential damage area.

Update 10:17 UTC:  Based on the present earthquake parameters (Magnitude, Depth, Population, etc) and our experience with earthquake damage impact, earthquake-report.com calls this earthquake extremely dangerous and expects injuries and serious damage

  • Salinas - 1 minute several pulses from moderate to strong
  • Vilcabamba - J\'ai été réveillée car le lit et toute la maison s\'est mis à vibrer. Comme si jetais sur une machine a laver pendant 5 à 10s. Je dormais je ne suis pas sûre de la durée.
  • Cuenca - We were both in bed; the time was around 5:20AM. We live in a 3-story apartment and the entire building was shaking enough to wake us up and cause concern. We have been living in Cuenca, Ecuador for 20 months and this is the strongest earthquake we have ever felt. We both got up and there were a couple of small after shocks that caused some swaying in the building. Several people also got up and went outside of the building to stand in the street.
  • Vilcabamba - J'ai été réveillée le matin et toute la maison s'est mis à vibrer. Comme si je jetais sur une machine à laver. 5 à 10s. Je ne suis pas sûr de la durée
  • Chipipe Beach Salinas - We were in bed 5:19am woke up the the bed swaying/shaking and bedside table lamp banging on glass , very scary. We went through the one in 2016.
  • Quito - Weak shaking
  • Quito - Where were at the last floor on the bulding and its shaking againg
  • Guayaquil - 0520hrs worn by bed and building shaking lasting 2-3 mins. 05:42hrs further shaking for 30 secs
  • Santo Domingo - We were sleeping and it shook hard enough to wake us up. Some neighbours are up and outside. Lots are alarmed.
  • Cuenca - Woke me up because the bed was shaking. It lasted for at lease 30 seconds to a minute. It is the strongest earthquake we have felt in the five years we've lived here. No immediate dame seen, but lights are coming in the homes around us.
  • Guayaquil - The shaking lasted for a while, I thought I was flying through turbulence, it was real scary!!! , i thought I was dreaming!
  • Cuenca - Woke us at about 5:20. Fairly long shakes, and don't recall any stronger in the 9 years we've lived here. Seemed to settle down, then again at 5:40, equally strong, it seemed. Some people left our wis story condo building.
  • Cuenca - I'm in Cuenca, woke up to shaking and the noise if the building rattling.
  • Olon - Woke up the whole house. Aftershock also. Doors opened, house creaked.
  • Puerto Cayo - Light shaking
  • Montanita - The shaking lasted for about 5 seconds , there were 2 shakings with an interval of about 30 minutes
  • Chiclayo-Lambayeque - Moderate shaking
  • Salinas - Bed shaking several seconds -woke us up. 7th floor
  • Guayaquil - Not sure amount of time, but it felt like a while. The initial rumble woke me up and gave me time to move to a corner of the room before the heaviest shaking was felt.
  • Trujillo - On 17th floor of building, awakened by bed swaying a bit. Wasn't sure if it was an earthquake. Lamp by bed rattled a little, too. Lasted at least 15 seconds because it had to have time to wake up us, too. About five minutes after it ended, an earthquake alarm sounded outside!
  • Guayaquil - I was laying in bed when i felt the bed shaking and then the entire house. My family woke up out of their sleep in a panic and ran to the threshold of the bedroom doorway. After a minute or two it stopped. We went back to our rooms. A few minutes later, maybe less than 10, we felt a light aftershock. Around 5:40 there was a bigger earthquake shock again. my entire family got very afraid and the shaking was strong. The whole neighborhood went outside into the street. it lasted maybe 2 minutes.
  • Cuenca - Very strong shaking
  • Reque, Chiclayo, Peru - Lasted 15 seconds with two aftershocks in waves
  • Zamora, Ecuador - Moderate shaking
  • Cuenca - Long one, then milder after shock. No damage.
  • Cuenca - Multiple shakes, stronger than I have felt in the past 6 years.
  • Cuenca - Unsure if there is any damage to property. Building shook for what seems like a long time but the shaking wasn’t stronger than what I’d experience in LA in the past 6 years so I did not seek cover. Aftershock came less than 30 mins later and was much more mild and lasted only a few seconds.
  • Montanita - 5:19 woke up to bed shaking, lasted about 1 min, then again at around 5:40 lasted about 30secs
  • Lima - Minor shaking 05:20. We're on the 10th floor which would have amplified the effect of any shaking on the ground.
  • Cuenc - Strong shaking around 5.30am for less than a minute
  • Cuenca - 5 18 am Windows sounding like the devil was pounding on them..Took a few seconds to realize..Dog was freaked out. Ran outside, looked back in to see hanging lights swinging. 5 40 felt what we thought was an aftershock, but was a separate earthquake
  • Loja - About 1.5 minutes
  • Cuenca - Been in Cuenca 5 1/2 years strongest earthquake yet and the longest shook for up to a minute. 25 minutes later another one
  • Trujillo - Light shaking for about 15 or 20 seconds accompanied by a little noise (rumble?). On the second floor of a very well-built, modern building.
  • Yomblon - Lasted 3 minutes damaged to houses.

    People :
Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.

Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
