Update 09:49 UTC: Ecuador's seismological agency says that this earthquake is in fact an aftershock from the M7.8 April 16, 2016 deadly Esmeraldas earthquake. Since April 16, 2016 Ecuador's seismological agency recorded 3741 aftershocks, most of them not felt by humans.

Update 23:56 UTC: Professor Max Wyss, who specializes in theoretical prognoses of injuries and fatalities expects : 0 to 20 fatalities and 0 to 100 injuries.

Update 23:36 UTC: Tectonically this is a subduction earthquake very close to the trench were the Nazca oceanic plate (red on the map below) subducts the South American plate at approx. 50 mm/year. In many places the plates are locked and the stress builds up until an earthquake frees the energy.

Update 23:16 UTC: No signs of any damage as yet. A lot of panic in Bahia de Caraquez, cars going fast getting out of the coasts as they feared for a (non-existent) tsunami. People tend to auto-evacuate after strong shaking and that's simply the best attitude.

Update 23:05 UTC: This earthquake will normally NOT generate Tsunami waves as the Magnitude is not powerful enough (besides a couple of exceptions, the Magnitude needs to be at least M7 of higher)

  • Las tunas - The shaking seemed to last 3-5 seconds. It was weak but noticeable enough that I thought there had been an earthquake.
  • Near Olon - Felt stomach quiver, then chairs we were sitting in gently shook. Hanging lights swayed slightly. Lasted approx. 15 sec. Was in Bahia April 16, 2016 and felt 7.8

  • Canoa - 8 to 10 seconds of shaking. A lot of noise from 4 month old home. No damage, or fallen pictures, or loss of electricity.
  • Olon - My house is elevated and started to sway back and forth. Chandelier started to sway back and forth. Shutters slightly opened and closed. It lasted around 30 seconds. No damage.
  • Montañita - I am in hotel kundalini in Montañita. I was laying in bed when I felt it. My girl who was taking a shower did not. Lasted only a few seconds. Felt like someone was rocking my bed side to side. Did not know what it was until today. She Thought I was going crazy. No damage to anything
  • Cotacachi - No damage. The chandelier in our house was swaying. It was a brief shaking, my husband was seated and he felt it. I was standing and I didn't feel it.

Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground.
