Update 10:24 UTC : Christchurch Earthquake: The aftermath - A Drone's View
This is video from Sumner beach, Scarborough Hill and Taylor's Mistake after A severe magnitude 5.7 earthquake Christchurch, New Zealand almost five years after a deadly tremor devastated the city. Taken with a DJI Phantom 3 drone.

Update 10:11 UTC : One should become superstituous! 🙂
Just back in Belgium after 5 weeks traveling in New Zealand. Each time i passed a city or region, 3 to 5 days later an strong earthquake happened in that area. I was in Christchurch from February 7 until February 9 :)). Luckily i am not superstituous and know "that's simply how the earth plates are moving constantly", do not look for crazy connections, simply accept it.

Update 10:11 UTC : Stuff.co.nz writes :
There has so far been no major injuries or serious structural damaged reported.
But there is still plenty of cleaning up to do, with reports of some buildings in South New Brighton being badly damaged, including broken glass and products having fallen off shop shelves.

Update 09:44 UTC : Nice GNS science technical information map of the earthquake

Screen Shot 2016-02-14 at 10.43.30

Update 09:37 UTC : A classical problem during earthquakes ALL OVER THE WORLD - Spark network congested - use text messages instead. Every voice call contains the information length of thousands of txt messages, thats why we would like to see an immediate blockage of voice calls from the telecom operators in case of a MX.X Magnitude earthquake. Only phone calls for help should be allowed.

Update 09:28 UTC : A compilation video of the side effects and the shaking of the video. Those sunbathing near the collapsed cliffs should better have run to higher ground instead of watching and filming what happened (just an ER remark)

Update 01:39 UTC : New Zealand authorities are currently assessing the situation. Our guess is that everything will be fast normal again although aftershocks will continue to happen.

Update 01:38 UTC : shaking of the earthquake Short but reasonably strong

Update 01:33 UTC : Orion says 400 Christchurch customers are without power including 100 in Banks Peninsula.

Update 01:26 UTC :

Update 01:16 UTC : Continuing aftershocks. 53 until a few moments ago

Update 01:14 UTC : Some liquefaction reports from Pine Beach

Update 01:07 UTC : Official comment from GNSscience :
Large quake off the coast of Christchurch
Caroline Little posted on Feb 14, 2016
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake has occurred at 1:13pm  New Zealand time, 15 km east of Christchurch approximately 15 km deep. So far we have received 2226 felt reports from Hawke's Bay to Invercargill as at 1:55pm . The highest level of impact from our felt reports so far has been MMI 6
Shaking of this level is described as "Felt by all. People and animals are alarmed,…"
ER: The depth is only 15 km, a lot shallower than initially reported (30 km). Based on the felt reports received by Geonet, we do not believe that serious damage will be detected.

Update 01:00 UTC :

Update 00:58 UTC : On the seismogram below one can see already a number of aftershocks (about 5 strong ones)

Update 00:57 UTC : So far no reports of serious damage or injuries. We expect however damage like fallen items, cracks in walls, falling tiles etc.

Update 00:56 UTC : Seismogram from a GNS science seismometer installed in Christchurch

Screen Shot 2016-02-14 at 01.55.43

Update 00:53 UTC : Geonet has now downgraded the Magnitude of the earthquake to M5.7 from M5.9 before

Update 00:49 UTC : Early reports are mentioning road damage

Update 00:46 UTC : People are now out in the streets. Supermarkets are evacuated and car parkings below major shopping complexes are locked. Nobody is allowed to take his car.

Update 00:40 UTC : The strength of today's earthquake / aftershock was a lot weaker than the 2 damaging earthquakes from a couple of years ago. Additionally it was deeper and happened just out in the ocean. Based on all these data, we expect max. some light damage and minimal injuties if any.

Update 00:37 UTC : Dust from the earth shaking on the picture of this tweet

Update 00:30 UTC : The earthquake struck just off the coast which will weaken the shaken potential somewhat.

MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
