  • Duncan, BC - about 5 seconds on house shaking very noticably, rumbling sound and windows flexing.
  • Richmond - Felt the bed move like the dog had jumped on, then heard a loud crack, and the house started to shake. No apparent damage.
  • Port Coquitlam - No damage, quite a strong shake that lasted about 3 seconds. Woke my husband up! We certainly felt the swaying!! Scary!
  • saanich - Bed was shaken around in the frame and woke me from aa deep sleep. Lasted about 8 seconds. Wild ride
  • mukilteo - In bed, upper floor, scared me, felt my bed slightly rocking. I immediately looked up recent earthquake and discovered the 4.8 that took place within minutes of when I felt the slight rocking.
  • Richmond - Rumbling, sounds of cracking as the earthquake moved through
  • Maple Ridge, BC - No damage but felt the entire house shake, the worst I've ever felt. Nothing fell over, but thought that things were going to.

  • Maple Ridge - At first thought it was a freight train passing by except shaking was stronger and more horizontal. Lasted about 4-5 seconds.
  • Coquitlam - Heard/felt sensation as when severe windstorm (90+km) happens, had time to wonder "is it windy out?" and then a 'wave' sensation hit with a corresponding loud BANG made by my house shaking, and all the kids came running "what was THAT?". Wondered if a car or tree hit the house, and then it dawned that it was an earthquake
  • New Westminster - Felt my building sway and my bed shaking.
  • Maple Ridge - Not so much a shake more a loud shudder. Like something big hit the house or fell off the roof.
  • Gabriola island - Bed shook. No damage
  • Bellingham - Been through many earthquakes. This one shook in 2 strong waves. Felt like the house moved 2 or 3 inches.
  • Langley - Felt shaking a kind of bang that shook our two story house. Kids are freaked out.
  • Ladner, Delta - No damage caused, but it felt like a truck had hit our home. It lasted for 2-3 seconds.

  • Vancouver - Dec 30, approx 23:50 hr, I heard a rumble and the window rattled for 3 seconds. Then silence - I looked out the window and all appeared quiet, but another man also was looking out the window from condo across alley. He must have felt it too. No known damage.

  • Maple Ridge - My dogs came running in the living room seconds before the whole house literally shook like a train was about to explode threw it. It came and went so quickly though. Maybe 5-7 seconds it felt like. The noises my house made were terrifying. I wonder if I should be concerned if any damage has occurred.
  • Duncan - Felt like a truck was passing threw the house. Bed was shaking, doors shook as tho someone was trying to open it
  • Glacier - Sounded like the people upstairs were stomping on the ceiling, telling us to turn down the TV - then we realized there are no people above us! No damage. Windows and structure ok

  • Surrey - Made pictures in our bedroom and objects shake. The ground was shaking. Sounded like something was hitting our house and took a few seconds to figure out it was an earthquake.
  • abbotsford bc - Changing channels on TV, sitting on edge of couch and almost knocked off. Thought car might have hit a tree outside and knocked the foundation but then confirmed with Abby Police that many were phoning about the quake. Walter the cat more surprised than I was.
  • Langley, BC - Plants shook, couch felt like it moved back and forth. Noise like something hitting the building.

  • Bellingham, WA - Reside in a 3rd story apartment, felt a slight rolling which increased for a couple of seconds. Items were shaking slightly, no damage.

  • Abbotsford - Live in High-rise building concrete built 45 years ago, sounded like huge crashing balcony windows rattled. Terrified of after shocks. not sure if I should exit building. Still feeling stuff but not sure if its just normal noises of building
  • Abbotsford - Walls rattling, pictures rattling, vases rattling, lamp rattling, building shook. Very obvious that it was an earthquake, much worse than in the summer.

  • Coquitlam - I was talking to my sister in California via Skype when my office chair I was sitting in in the living room began to shake for several seconds. I asked my sister to stop talking as I gauged if it was an earthquake or a big truck going by in the lane. I was sure it was an earthquake and when it stopped I was shaken myself and my sister said she thought she had seen the two large pictures on the wall behind me move. Though when I looked they seemed still in place and not crooked.
  • Coquitlam - Lasted only a few seconds,sounded like something hit my building.i am on 3rd floor ,gave it a good shake .
  • Langley - Whole house started shaking, one picture fell while others shook, and everyone I know up to about 10km away felt it

  • Maple Ridge - I was sitting on my couch and my whole couch moved from left to right,I then stood up and the whole place was still shaking! I live on the 8th floor of a 12th floor building! It only lasted a few seconds but was really scary!! My building moved about 1-2' from left to right,so north to south.I'm so glad it wasn't any larger than 4.9 of an Earthquake!!
  • Maple Ridge - I was sitting on my couch,the whole couch moved from North to South,side to side!! I stood up and it was scary so I sat back down! No damage but scary! Thank God it wasn't any bigger then 4.9!
  • Victoria - I wondered what was going on. I thought that a huge strong wind had blown up. Looked outside and there was no wind blowing, no tree branches were moving.
  • Burnaby/New West BC - Yes, My desk and computer screen were shaking, quite a bit. I thought it might have been a big truck but when I got up to check I felt wobbley and there was no truck.
  • Richmond - Heard loud noise and noticed walls and ceiling move. Tree of ornaments continued to shake after. Felt like a large truck had hit our building. Then it crossed our mind that it may have been an earthquake when we couldn't figure out what had happened. Dog was out of sorts.
  • South surrey - Husband and I woke up to the bedroom doors banging that were already shut. We thought our children would wake to it but luckily they kept sleeping. Our bed was shaking from side to side. We could hear a low rumbling sound, kind of scary.

  • Mission - TIME 0:45 AM PST 9 8:45 UTC live in a Mobile home resting on Concrete slab and Piling's . I am not sure if its is tied down . THe Walls moved and it sounded as if the house was hit by a large tree.. NO Apparent damage No Downed trees or signs of external mage or contact. NO other homes appeared awakened. Coincides with the Quake in the Gulf islands of BC Washington State. lasts +/=1-1.5 seconds no second shock. or harmonic tremor
  • Kamloops - Felt my bed shake & thought it was my daughter trying to wake me. I turned to look but it was not her. 1:48 a.m.
  • Vancouver - At approximately 11:50PM on 30 December 2015, my wife and I were awakened by a loud noise and a violent shaking of our condo on the 30th floor in our building. We were very alarmed; however, no broken objects or injuries were sustained.
  • Sidney, BC - Whole house shook for about 5 seconds, dog barked during episode.
  • Port Coquitlam - Lying in bed and we heard what sounded like a very large truck driving down our street and then a loud bang. Our house shook very strong for several seconds.

  • Bellingham - Loud bang? Everything in the house was shaking and swaying.I have an old cowbell and it kept ringing the whole time. It lasted for about 15 seconds.
  • Port Townsend, WA - No property damage, just a very brief shaking for a second or two.
  • South surrey - In bed dogs started to bark bed shook strongly for about five seconds, light fixture swinging back and firth

  • Duncan - I live in a log cabin. Heard a rumble and moved logs for a split second.

  • Maple ridge - Woke 3 of us up thought someone banging on house?3 loud bangs like train coupling up no damage but it did wake neighborhood up

  • North Vancouver - Heard a large bang thought there was an intruder and the dog was barking then felt the shaking. Scary. Makes one wonder when the big one may hit.
  • Agnew (Sequim/Port Angeles) - I only know of the earthquake because a glass case that is in my bedroom was shaking and making noise like as if it sounded like my dog was shaking his collar and his ID tag was making noise. Only lasted about 5 seconds.
  • Bellingham WA - We felt a single strong tremor or shock wave that shook the house and made our built in furniture feel as though it had been moved. It was strong enough to startle us and cause our cats to leap up. Because we've experienced earthquakes before, I checked the time--11:40 PM.
  • Nanaimo - No damages. Cat got nervous.
  • Bellingham, WA - Loud bang that works us up and everything started shaking for about 10 seconds or so.
  • Richmond - On 3rd floor of an airport area hotel and a plane was taking off as it started. Felt like an unusually loud engine rumble, then realized it was a quake that lasted maybe 7 seconds. Wife (from here) and I, who've previously been through plenty between living in California and visiting Japan, were drifting off and hardly stirred except to note it. Kids didn't even wake. No damage I could see anywhere on hotel grounds.
  • Sidney, BC - Ik woon ongeveer 4 kilometer van de epicentrum. Eerst een rollend geluid zoals van een vrachtwagen die langsrijdt. Toen schudden van het bed voor ongeveer 15 seconden. Het leek alsof iemand het bed op massage stand had gezet. Tegen de tijd dat we realiseerden dat het een aardbeving was, was het al over.
  • Nanaimo - Woke up from a deep sleep when my bed smashed into the wall. Second floor of house. No damage heard of.
  • Parksville - Just shaking, no damage.
  • West Vancouver - Big bang and shaking lasted for approx 4 seconds at 11.40pm on 29th December.Pretty scarey.
  • Marysville - Bed was shaking, house rattled!
  • BLAINE, WA - Felt like jello. Bed and room undulating
  • Surrey - strong jerk for 3 seconds
  • Coquitlam - Heard a rumbling sound then our free standing clothes closet starting rattling and you could feel a light shaking. The first rumbling woke my husband and son from their sleep. Died down after a few seconds then the rumbling started again for another few seconds.
  • Cobble Hill - I was in bed just about to go to sleep when it felt like a cat jumped on the bed. But I have no cat so I got up and wondered if the neighbours cat got in the house, but could not find any evidence of a cat so I went back to bed and went to sleep not even knowing there was an earthquake until I got up and read the facebook posts of my neighbours. :~)
  • White Rock - felt like a truck hit the house - momentary thump then nothing.
  • Chilliwack - thought someone or something hit the house. wife felt it in bed
  • Vancouver,BC - I was a sleep and was woken with bed shaking/vibrating. I am on top floor of 4 floor condo unit. A few cracks in ceiling and wall are now larger. A few itmes moved that are on self but nothing fell.
  • oak harbor - no damage but my dogs and cat were freaked out. 2 short tremors.
  • Surrey - Whole house shook & window blinds rattled. Nothing was damaged.
  • North Vancouver - Felt at about 1:30 a.m. by me, my son and our (shocked) Labrador. Didn't even feel the one at 4:30 a.m., but the earlier one hasn't been reported on any news stations
  • Victoria - I woke up suddenly to loud, blast-like banging noise or rumble. It stopped suddenly and then I realized it had been a strong tremor.
  • Port Coquitlam - Felt about 3x times stronger than a truck rumbling by. Scary for our kids. Facebook was the first place that shared the sensation; nothing was on the news/internet right away.
  • Duncan - Moderate shaking, the bed and TV shook.
  • Chilliwack - Caused my head to sway slightly. More of a feeling of being inebriated but I hadn't consumed any alcohol.

  • Mapleridge - At 11:40 pm I was in bed and felt bed shake for 2-3 seconds followed with in 10-15 seconds by second tremor 3-5 seconds where 3 story ,4000 sq ft house shook . I live on North side of blue mountain in remote area .
  • East Saanich - Woke me up - the windows were rattling and the furniture was shaking for ~30 seconds. No damage.
  • Bellingham - Was playing darts, enjoying some much needed quiet time, when all the bottles on the shelf started rattling against each other. Lights swung, and drinks sloshed. Maybe lasted 2 seconds, but wasn't enough for my mother in Seattle to have felt it.
  • LYNDEN - At 11:40 p.m. was woke up by the sound like a vehicle had crashed into our townhome. My earrings on the dressing table were shaking. When I looked outside nothing appeared to have happened. The whole shaking lasted 20-30 seconds. Doesn't appear to be any damage. Very scary!!!

  • Oak Harbor, Wa - We are on Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor. We were just getting ready to lay down for the night when we felt the oh so familiar to me, earthquake come through. My daughter said what was that? I saw the christmas ornaments on the tree shaking and quickly did a mental check of what was on the walls to see if anything could have fallen. I'm originally from Ca so I knew what it was and was shocked to feel one in Wa. I get alerts of small ones all the time but to be shaken enough to really feel it.
  • Abbotsford - Woke up to bed rumbling, windows and pictures shaking on wall. lasted about 4 seconds
  • Richmond, BC - Heard some rumblings and what sounded like pebbles being pelted at the glass patio door. Then the whole building shook, loud rumble.We are on the second floor of an apt. building. Lasted about 3-4 seconds.Have not noticed any damage
  • Sidney - Two very strong jolts. Some wooden log joints shifted and cracks in logs grew larger. Minor back injury occurred because I was twisting to reach for something when first jolt happened. We both ran outside the house. It felt like a truck or tree hit the house (twice). Our house is located almost on top of the epicenter.
  • Sequim Wash. - Was sitting on the floor felt a shaking that seem to come from deep under the ground. My little dog woke up since he felt it too.
  • sequim wa - Sitting in a chair. Felt like the house turned to jello for a few seconds then all calm.
  • Port Hadlock, WA - Near Port Townsend, WA Felt like a large animal or human was outside bumping on the exterior wall. Felt like a bear or horse. The sofa was bouncing, shaking. Scary. Seemed to last 3-5 seconds.
  • Vancouver - The shaking of the bed and room woke me up
  • Victoria - There was a very loud creaking and rumbling noise, like a really large delivery truck crashing into our house, for about 5 seconds before the shaking began. Shaking seemed to last 3-4 seconds. Some small objects fell down. We were woken, had a 'what the heck' conversation, got out of bed, ran to our children's room and pulled them out of bed before the event had finished.
  • Bellingham - I felt a shockwave that hit the air. About a second after the ground seemed to start moving in more of a flow of energy (like a wave) then the shaking of the ground. Much different then last earthquakes I have experienced
  • Gibsons - Dec 29 2015 @11:45pm Was making the bed and the bed started shaking violently. It was banging up and down. About 2 mins later felt like vertigo the house swayed.
  • Richmond - I heard and felt a very loud BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG - saw the whole room zig zag from side to side
  • Gibsons, B.C. - Moderate shaking - chairs sitting in were moving - one moved side to side, the other moved front to back. Very brief episode, perhaps 5-10 seconds. Walls didn't move. Two adults present felt very shaken internally afterwards - quite discombobulated feeling. Both had headaches subsequently.
  • Lynn Valley - While sitting watching TV, suddenly there was a large noise overhead like a large truck driving over 2 corner walls in the hallway moved about 5 times. Stopped suddenly. Checked upstairs but no-one there. no damage or breakage in apartment

  • Vancouver - Shook about 5 seconds, causing bookshelves and furniture to move around. Woke my family up. Doesn't seem to be any damage.
  • Colwood - We felt about 15 seconds of rumbling, like a build up, then a loud bang (like a blast) accompanied by heavy shaking of the house which only lasted a few seconds. Set off a couple of car alarms in the area and scared the dog who was barking like mad, had a hard time settling her down afterward.

  • Coquitlam - At 10:55 pm I felt a small tremor. I spent the next 45 minutes searching the seismic sites to see if there was any record of this .then at 11:39 I felt the big tremor that everyone is now taking about.i wonder if anyone else felt this earlier rumble? Brad.

  • Sooke - No damage, sounded like a truck coming at the house, a lot of rumbling, then my room and bed started shaking, felt it right underneath me. Lasted 5 - 10 seconds, freaked me right out
  • victoria - The shake must have jostled my wooden bed frame as that was the noise that woke me up: a cracking of wood and I thought something had happened to the frame. But the TV was on and right at that same time, the news announcer looked a bit unnerved and said something had just happened and he thought it was an earthquake.

  • Vancouver - I was at the Festival of Lights in VanDusen Botanical Garden between 4:45pm and 5:00pm December 30. I felt the ground under me rock westward and then eastward. I said to my friend "an earthquake. Did you feel that?" She said "no." There are no reports in the news about it. Was I the only one to feel it? I slept through the one on Dec 29 that was all over the news.
  • Abbotsford - Live in a 4 story condo. The building rattled and a "shift" left and right was felt.This went on for 7-8 seconds. No damage done.
  • Blaine - I live in blaine Washington on the Canada border and I have two oldest daughters and we lived here for a year from Minnesota .. Never heard or felt a earthquack ever in my life . my teenage daughters were very scared and couldn't sleep but we got thru it..
  • Bellingham - I was in bed about to fall asleep and loud noise startled me. There was a short lived violent shake that shook the building. I looked up and saw a structural column of a partial wall dividing two rooms moving back and forth. I live on 2nd floor of 5 story condo.
  • Victoria - It seemed to travel from North to South along the floor of the house. It only seemed to last a few seconds.
  • Blaine, WA, USA - After 11:30 pm Dec. 29, 2015. I had just come upstairs when room walls undulated for 3 seconds accompanied by loud noise. Nothing shook per se. A bit surreal, thought house had been hit by large truck or something. Called the radio station (KARI) 1 mile from my house to see if they had info. Since then have checked all over house, no damage or cracks. Amazing because those walls really moved!
  • New Westminster - moderate quick shaking of the whole High rise Building around 11.40 pm ( 9th floor), felt like there was a slight upward movement for maybe 2-3 seconds, with a loud cracking sound no visible damage to Structure

  • Sedro-Woolley - Christmas ornaments swayed back and worth for a few seconds but nothing broke, but they made it very obvious.

  • sooke, bc - Initially a loud bang as if something had struck the house. Then a pause and then shaking, side to side, enough to make me put my hand against the wall to steady me as I got up from the chair and then it stopped. Less than 10 seconds total time I would say. There was also a loud sound before and during like a train going by.
  • Friday Harbor - I was already awake and heard rumble a second before i felt the shake ,the intensity increased and lasted about ten seconds. A couple of small items fell from shelf

  • Maple Ridge - Was about to go to bed but it started shaking and my room decor was vibrating, also my parents door was going crazy. At first I thought it was our dryer (which was on at the time) but 4 seconds later realized it wasn't. Ran across my room to a door frame and waited there for the shaking to end (approximately 15 seconds long), after it was over stayed under the door frame until I felt safe. No damage that I know of so far...
  • Port Angeles - At around 11:30 I felt my bed mildly shake and the lamp rock a little on my nightstand and heard a loud slam coming from downstairs. When I went downstairs I noticed the silverware drawer was opened.
  • Vancouver - Short and violent. Felt like a car drove into the house -- bang! No damage.
  • British Columbia , North Vancouver - Around 11:40 pm , December 29. I was sleeping , and woke up by the loud strong shaking earthquakes. Quite scary , but short . At North Vancouver, AnneMacdonald Way .

  • Burbank - No damage. Just shaking and noise since I'm on the 3rd floor and the building is wobbly.

  • Pinon Hills, California - 2 rolling earthquakes. The first about 3 second and the second about 2 second and lighter than the first.
  • San Bernardino California - Felt like a real strong jolt shook the house and then two minutes later there was two strong jolts
  • Los Angeles - I was sitting at our dining table. The table suddenly started shaking. At first, I thought it was just my imagination, but as I sat steadily on my chair, I realized it was,indeed, an earthquake. I checked my cellphone for the time. It read 5:49 pm PDT. The shake lasted for less than a minute.
  • Upland - at first thought someone bumped against table where I was seated...I felt like I was on a kiddie rollercoaster, only lasted a few seconds.
  • Vancouver - Very rapid tremor, over in a few seconds but everything rattled
  • Bowen Island - Tremor at 2340 hr.

  • Vancouver Island - It was slow shaking (dresser and desk shook, then one big crash and shake.)

  • Vancouver - Single large "bump" and then building swayed for a few seconds after
  • Maple Ridge - floor and chair shook, compture monitor wiggled - approx 10-15 secs.
  • Delta BC - Big pulse. Short & stong horizontal movement
  • Vancouver - Bed shook 4 times
  • Victoria - Very strong sharp snap, followed by a muted rumble and a short period (under a minute) of shaking. Some ornaments fell off of the Christmas tree, with rattling of plates in the china cabinet.

  • Vancouver - Light shaking of my old three-story house at Commercial Dr. and Broadway in Vancouver, B.C.; rattling of door panels or furniture. Duration about 4 seconds. 11:43pm PDT.

  • Victoria BC - Condo - very fast shaking - no damage to condo building - lasted under 30 seconds
  • Qualicum Beach - Heard brief noise and then felt my body vibrate softly for a while.
  • Victoria - Strong enough that leaves on plants moved noticeably, pet cat was alarmed and began running immediately only as I was becoming aware.
  • South Surrey/White Rock - Sliding mirror doors shaking throughout the 2 story house. Shook King size memory foam bed. Loud bang like a car hit the house.
  • Abbotsford - Creaking noise. Thought for a second the dog had jumped onto the bed if it hadn't been for the rattle of the window.
  • Chilliwack - House just bumped for a second
  • bellingham, wa - No damage. Felt myself shaking and looked around to see things moving, lasted a few seconds.
  • Victoria - Approx 1135 pm, short but sharp. Rattled the ornaments on the tree and knocked over some trinkets.

  • Victoria - Lots of shaking for a few seconds
  • San Juan Island, WA - Very anxious, shaking was stronger than previously experienced in this location. Did not last long - would estimate 10 seconds. No obvious damage inside house but it is dark so cannot see outside.
  • Vancouver - Felt the tremor for a few seconds in one wall.
  • Surrey - Distinct but light shaking of house. No damage.
  • Saanich - Woke me up and started me
  • Abbotsford - Two shudders at 11:40 p.m......thought some drunken driver might have hit the side of the house....but such was not the case. Looked outside....everything normal.
  • Victoria, BC - I felt the tremors while I was inddors at about 11:39pm PST.
  • Victoria - Moderate shaking and very loud.

  • North Vancouver - On 8th floor, woken by bed shaking and window blinds hitting window
  • Victoria - Two bursts in quick succession; latter stronger than former. More vertical movement than lateral. House is older (1939) but no apparent damage inside; existing lathe and plaster cracks no worse.
  • North Vancouver - Brief but sharp shake. In between Light to Moderate shaking. ~10 seconds after initial shock. Approximate time was: 11.43pm PST.
  • Mission - Just dozed off to be awakened by the sound of our dresser shaking, It was hitting the wall behind it. The dog on our bed felt it also. It was at 11:25 ish. I looked out the window to be greeted by others peeking right back at me. No damage found.
  • Langley - One large shake... minor trembling for 30 seconds after.

  • Langley - Felt in cement basement floor, unoccupied office chair and fixtures lightly shaking, also felt light shaking in my chair.
  • Victoria - We have a 4th-floor apartment and the shaking was a rumbly, back-and-forth movement that went on for several (perhaps 8?) seconds. The shaking was strong enough to wake a family member who had gone to bed. No structural damage found, no evidence of the quake whatsoever aside from one item that had rolled off a desk.

  • Richmond - Started light then got progressively stronger. Lasted about 5 seconds. Nothing fell.
  • Burnaby - No damage but lamps moved, and wife and I felt the house shake quite a bit. 3-5 secs maybe.

  • West Vancouver - About 4 seconds long. Heard a Big bang and felt the shake. No damage but the bed rattled.

  • Victoria BC - Two storey house on a concrete slab. Mild shaking, followed by a single shock, like a thunderclap, then more mild shaking. Will have to inspect the structure in daylight, and see whether the roof now leaks, the next time that it rains.
  • Vancouver - Felt like light wave as though something hit the building. Minor shaking.
  • Vancouver - Loud noise, pictures creaking against walls.
  • Port Moody - Felt like a heavy wind gust hit building, but there was no wind, duration was about 4 sec. Creaking noises

  • Cloverdale (Surrey) - Felt like train derailed. Or moderate explosion. Very Fast (3 seconds)
  • Langley - Felt more like a brief impact on the house.
  • New Westminster - Felt 10 seconds of shaking, sounded like a passing train. Called my parents five minutes later, and they felt it in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island.
  • Maple Ridge - Series of light shakes lasting no more than 10 seconds. Shook the couch and table.
  • North Vancouver - Husband asleep - didn't wake up. House shook violently for 2 seconds.. No damage. Was sure it was an earthquake - a Big Bang! Scared me half to death.
  • Surrey, B.C. - 11:40pm Like a big truck hit the side of the house! Only lasted a few seconds but everything shook.
  • Surrey - There was a loud crack that shook our two-story wood frame building once. Very noticeable, many residents ran outside. No damage observed and no objects fell.
  • SURREY - Aquarium water almost spilled, furniture rattled, whole house shook and swayed
  • ferndale - I felt a quick 3 second shake. Felt like a truck hit the house. Mirror rattling. I thought maybe the qasgwr was off kilter. I then called my mom and she felt the same 5 miles away

  • North Vancouver - awoke approx 11:43 pm bed shook hard, I am on third floor and could feel the building move. Initially thought it was a strong wind, but the bed really moved/shook, then realized it was e/q. scary sensation. will check outer bld walls in AM.

  • Richmond - My bed and night stand shook hard felt like an severely out of balance front load wash mashine shaking the upper level of a laundry room lasted about 7-8 seconds and grew in intensity
  • Parksville - Very quick "shudder" - I thought my husband might have gotten up with one of the dogs.
  • Abbotsford - Creaking and shaking for 8 - 10 seconds. Woke several in our apartment building. No damage to report.
  • Burnaby - Was just startled by the sudden shaking of the building where I live; seems to have been related to the 4.8 magnitude earthquake 6 km from North Saanich, British Columbia, Canada.
  • Monroe, WA - At11:39 pm Pacific Time I thought I had accidentally hit the massage button on my electric bed! Felt like a large truck passing. No damage or swaying noticed. Seemed to last about 10-15 seconds.
  • New Westminster - Felt walls and fridge shaking fairly heavily. Can confirm one person felt it outside waiting for the bus in Burnaby.
  • Langley, BC - No damage, but it shook the whole 3 level home.
  • Bellingham - Quick. Sharp roll. No damage
  • Vancouver - Very short 1-3 second intense shake of the house
  • Port ludlow washington - Shook the bed and rattled some furniture. No damage, just a weak shaking. Lasted about 5 seconds or so
  • Richmond - Didn't last long. Glasses rattled. Third floor apartment.
  • Vancouver - Nothing fell but every where was shaking so much.
  • Surrey - 4.9 magnitude earthquake. My bed was shaking. got scared
  • Maple Ridge, BC - Watching TV..the heavy metal DOOR, on a 5'tall heavy metal gun-safe positioned against the North wall of family room, began making very loud clanging noises as the door rattled back and forth during the shaking. Time was 11:40pm P.S.T. I have not gone outside (in the darkness) to investigate any damage outside. I checked online and see that Victoria city, Vanc.Island had a quake at exactly that time.
  • Langley - It woke the dogs up and shook the closet doors.
  • Duncan - I felt it as it woke me. Screamed to husband to grab the baby as I thought it was going to continue and was the "big" one we all feared. It stopped before he came to. Needed online proof there was an earth quake to show him I wasn't crazy haha. But it was strong short and sweet.

  • Bellingham - Approx. 11:40 pm, loud sound and one large "wave", enough to move the house (it creaked as if a massive gust of air hit it) and my upper body swayed once as if on a boat in wavy water. Anything hanging swayed mildly for approx. 10-15 seconds. Hard to choose a shaking rating since the initial "impact" was much stronger than the shaking for the duration.
  • Blaine, WA - No damage, mostly noticed by the blinds shuttering not much other movement.
  • Langley - Could hear the light fixture jingle and then felt ground rumble and bed shake for about 20 seconds. Strong and consistent for about first 10 seconds and residual for last 10.

But when I called hello he was coming out of bedroom upstairs asking what that was and daughter yelled out from room at same time. Everyone felt beds shake hard enough to wake them.

  • Langley, BC - No damage. I was in my room laying in bed. I have shelving in my room for where I like to keep my ornaments, jewellery box and basically my favorite pretty things. When my things started shaking I wasn't at first alarmed because this isn't out of the ordinary with having rowdy neighbors. But then my bed and everything else starting shaking as well and it did feel like a minute although I think it was 30-40 good seconds long. When it was finished I can honestly say I was shaking, I was scared.
  • Vancouver - 4.9 earthquake off coast of Vancouver, BC
  • Surrey BC - Just after 11:30 pm PST,a low rumbling occurred (thought my daughter was stomping around the bathroom), then the bed shook, followed by the bookcase. Lasted about 7 seconds. Papers fell off ledges, but no real damages. Frightened everyone though. We are located higher up, on a bluff, unlike nearby Richmond, which is essentially silt. No reports of damages reported anywhere (yet) in the Lower Mainland or Vancouver Island. Predictions range strength from 4.3 to 4.9.
  • Vancouver - Shook the whole bed. Jumped out of bed right away!
  • Port Coquitlam - It lasted 30 seconds and woke someone sleeping in bed. Two story house on a cement slab shook steadily. Sitting in a couch chair it felt like a vibrating bed you might find in a motel, except a little more shaking. I felt a warm sensation where I was sitting. Everyone in the wood frame house felt it. It was an eery, scary feeling. I'll check for cracks in cement tomorrow.
  • Blaine wa - Laying in bed, shook for a few seconds, window's rattled no damage done. Freaked out the wife, 3 kids slept through it 2 felt it.

  • Vancouver - We live on the top floor of a three story apartment building that is on a somewhat steep hill in South Vancouver. There was mild rattling for about 30 seconds followed by violent shaking for about 15 seconds. I was standing up and the shaking almost made me fall over. Our flat screen tv rocked back and forth so much I thought it was going to fall off the shelf. I must have tensed my body because I feel like I have been in a car accident. Scary.
  • Vancouver - I was working in my bedroom and the fireplace (electric) rocked back and forth and the broom and mop and such fell down in the hallway as the house was jolted as if hit like a wave, lasted a few seconds. Felt very deep in the ground

  • West Vancouver - House shook for a few seconds. No objects dislodged or damaged, but things on Christmas tree shook.
  • Vancouver - Shake duration was about 4 seconds, but it seemed pretty powerful and rocked my chest... Not sure if I'm being a baby or not.

  • North Vancouver - had just fallen asleep, bed shook, woke dog up (she's hiding now) and the rest of my family woke up saying did you feel that earthquake. Didn't last long. But definitely felt the shaking.
  • Vancouver - Felt like dogs ran in the yard fast then felt the shake like a strong wind
  • Richmond - Lasted 5-6 seconds- house shook
  • Port Moody - woke up, heard rattling, bed shaking, dog woke up too looking around.
  • Surrey BC - Dresser shook and mirror bumped the wall from the shaking. About 3 to 4 seconds. Bed shook but the dog slept through the whole thing.
  • Port Coquitlam - No damage but could clearly feel the earthquake move through the condominium as if it was a soft wave. Not a hard sharp band and swinging lights/ lamps but a smooth movement which followed a rumbling sound, not a load bang. Heard on local media it is a 4.9 magnitude earthquake.
  • Abbotsford - Loud thump & wall behind me shook with small objects on a shelf on that wall (north) falling over; then a 2nd thud & more shaking 11:25 pm PST - no damage Abbotsford, BC Heard the quake was 4.9, south of Victoria, BC
  • Langley - Felt like a giant jolt kind of like a bomb went off
  • Snohomish, WA 98290 - Just a quick minute, large solid desk shook, bottles clinked in the kitchen.
  • Vancouver, BC - A weird feeling in the air and then all my kitchen track lights on the ceiling were bouncing around and I thought they may come down or snap off! Also the corner of the hallway wall and kitchen wall where my hand was seemed to be moving. I'm on the 4th floor.
  • Deming, WA - Very short lived; couch shook and door/windows rattled. Startled both my cat and dog awake.
  • Chemainus - Heard it and felt it. Strong shaking but very short lived.
  • Abbotsford - No damage but the house shook for about 5 seconds and knocked things off shelves. This was the most rocking I've felt here in quite a while.
  • vancouver bc - Sofa n light fixtures shaken
  • Victoria - It was quite a loud sound this time but not longer than 3 seconds. Maybe 5. and I actually heard a wall make a cracking sound. I haven't seen a visible crack so far. Nothing fell.
  • Coquitlam - Everything shaking. No damage. Security lights going on at houses down the street.
  • Chilliwack - Woke me up, my door shoke like crazy, same with my bed... my friends wall cracked.
  • Surrey - First floor apartment. At 11:40 pm PST I heard a loud crack from floor above me followed by ten seconds or so of light shaking - the rocker/recliner I was sitting in began to rock.
  • Vancouver - i was in the shower and the earth started shaking, it was quite strong but there was no damage
  • Oak Harbor - Lying in bed, 8 condo complex began rocking, causing hanging pictures to sway to and fro from the wall. The bed was rocking as was the TV stand. No apparent inside damage visible. Too dark outside to check foundation.
  • Vancouver - Very weak shaking for a few seconds followed by stronger shake for 1 second. Then a loud crack sounding like the building cracking. Most neighbours felt and heard the same thing.

    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
