Update 23:05 UTC : US Marines begin Aid operation in Nepal with the Osprey helicopters

The U.S. military made its first surveillance flight in Nepal Monday, a week after the country was hit by a devastating earthquake that’s killed more than 7,300 people. Four tilt-rotor Osprey aircraft that can land in tight spaces flew over the disaster zones.
U.S. Marine Brigadier General Paul Kennedy told CBS news he could see landslides during his flyover.
“It’s just wiping out the roads,” said Kennedy . “They’re going to have to rely immediately upon an airlift to help these folks out and then you’re going to have to start from the valley and dig your way all the way up to those villages.”
Kennedy and USAID’s Bill Berger had been asked by Nepal’s government to assess the region near the Chinese border.
“We saw a great deal of devastation,” said Berger after the flight. “Even the equipment to clear the roads we saw was stranded in many places along the road.”

Update 22:40 UTC : The villages in the higher Manaslu area need URGENTLY FOOD. People have no more rice and relief does not seem to make a priority from it. Same goes for Laprak and Langtang.

Update 18:35 UTC : OCHA Overview from yesterday
On 3 May, the Government has formally requested international search and rescue (SAR) teams to begin their demobilization and exit plans. The Government also reiterated that there are no customs applicable to incoming relief items, and informed that 20,000 gratis visas (free visas) have been issued since the earthquake. The Government also assured that coordination is becoming clearer and more streamlined in terms of the flow of incoming relief items at the airport. Two humanitarian hubs have been established in Gorkha District Headquarters (west of Kathmandu) and Chautara in Sindhupalchowk District (northeast of Kathmandu) to coordinate field level aid operations.
An additional five logistics hubs are also being established in Birgunj (Parsa District), Bharatpur (Chitwan District), Deurali (Gorkha District), Dhulikhel (Kavre District), and Sindhupalchowk District.
Humanitarian partners continue to scale up relief distributions. Distribution of a total of 2,094 metric tons (MT) of food has begun across 15 districts. Since 29 April, some 52,000 tarpaulins have been distributed in 29 districts while an additional 234,161 tarpaulins are en route to Nepal.
Logistics, however, remains a key challenge with limited air transport to reach areas that are not accessible by road. Security incidents continue to be reported in Dolakha District.
While much focus has been around the central areas of Kathmandu, Gorkha and Sindhupalchowk, many other districts and remote villages also need to be reached, particularly in the mountainous and hard to reach areas. Sustained relief and recovery efforts are required before the next monsoon season which is forecasted to begin in about six weeks.
On 4 May (as of 16:00, UTC+5:45), the Government reported that 7,365 people have died and 14

Update 13:13 UTC : 500,000 children to be vaccinated
The Nepalese Ministry of Health and Population will carry out a campaign to vaccinate more than 500,000 children in Nepal following the recent earthquake in Kathmandu.
The vaccination campaign, supported by the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) and the World Health Organization (WHO), will be launched as a protective measure against outbreaks of measles in the informal camps housing victims of the April 25 earthquake.
Unicef representative in Nepal Tomoo Hozumi said in a statement on Monday that the lack of shelter and sanitation following the earthquake are big risk factors for the spread of diseases, especially in densely populated areas.
“Measles is very contagious and can potentially be deadly.

The people in the remote villages of the Himalaya will listen to the sounds of the rotors like the most beautiful music in the world. We have no news yet of the sectors where the Ospreys have unloaded relief today.

Update 10:57 UTC : Sindhupalchok’s sorrow - The hard-hit district is losing hope despite being so close to the capital
The Arniko Highway coils eastwards from Kathmandu towards the Chinese border at Kodari. Every settlement, every bazar, every village along the way has been flattened.
In town after town, even ten days after the earthquake hit, people are moving about as if in a daze – trying to dig for dead relatives and belongings. The prosperous and once thriving highway markets along have been reduced to mounds of bricks and timber.
Sindhupalchok is the worst hit district, with 3,360 fatalities reported so far, almost half of the official casualty. Sanga Chok is one of the worst hit areas in the district with 160 deaths reported just there alone so far.

Update 09:34 UTC : Coordinated efforts needed for disaster relief, recovery in Nepal
A coordinated global response to the aftermath of Nepal's earthquake is necessary and essential as such an approach will ensure that the impoverished Asian country copes with the disaster, both in the immediate and the longer term.
The good will and concern around the world are enormous after Nepal was shattered by a mammoth earthquake more than a week ago. But the country still faces numerous obstacles on the tough road to disaster relief and recovery.
Damaged roads, ineffective communication, power outage and landslides have not only hampered rescue operations but also delayed deliveries of disaster relief supplies, making shortages of basic necessities acute.
The shortage of supplies is coupled with the possibility of epidemics. The United Nations has warned that diarrhea was already a growing problem and a measles outbreak was feared due to a shortage of vaccines.
Meanwhile, post-disaster construction would also be extremely challenging for the country following a disaster of this size and geographic reach.
With an aim to save more lives and help Nepalese people recover from the quake sooner, it is imperative for the international community, especially countries in the Asia-Pacific region, to work in concerted efforts to ensure that their relief efforts are effective and properly coordinated, and keep the country from being hit by a second wave of deaths from preventable causes.
So far relief supplies have reached the headquarters of all affected districts and it is expected that supplies will soon be airdropped to those remote villages cut off by landslides.
Dozens of countries have sent rescue crews to the quake-stricken areas, including China, the United States, Britain, Russia, Germany and Israel, and several international medical teams have been dispatched to the quake-hit areas to cope with the dire situation.
Meanwhile, international organizations such as the United Nations Children's Fund are working closely with the Nepalese government to see to it that humanitarian supplies are delivered and distributed to affected communities as quickly as possible.
As of Friday, China had earmarked two packages of humanitarian aid worth 60 million yuan (9.7 million U.S. dollars) for Nepal.
A 62-member Chinese search and rescue team was among the first outside helpers to reach quake-hit areas in Nepal. They were followed by more teams from Chinese governmental and civil organizations, bringing with them much-needed life-saving equipment and materials.
More than 350 Chinese engineers, doctors and rescue workers are now working in Nepal to save lives and help the quake-ravaged country overcome the catastrophe.

These foreigners have been killed in the 7.9-magnitude quake in Mount Everest base camp, Khumbu and Langtang regions among others. "There might be different death tolls released by embassies based on own information, but our data is based on the deaths reported in Nepal Tourist Police," Sarad Pradhan, media consultant of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), told Xinhua,
Some 52 foreign nationals were injured in the quake and 109 foreigners were still unaccounted for.
According to the NTB, three Chinese have been killed and nine are still missing since the disaster on April 25.
"The toll might get higher as we are in the process of collecting more reports," Pradhan added. (source : Xinhua)

Update 18:52 UTC : Most buildings in Kathmandu deemed uninhabitable or unsafe following quake
More than three-quarters of the buildings in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, are uninhabitable or unsafe following the 7.9-magnitude earthquake nine days ago, a new survey has revealed.
Assessments of 2,500 buildings carried out by more than 1,000 local engineers during the last four days have revealed that a fifth are no longer habitable and three-quarters need repairs before they can be considered safe.
“The sample is a random one and so representative of the city as a whole. The damage is bad. We are still discovering its extent and will have to do a full and thorough final assessment at some point,” said survey coordinator Drubha Thapa, president of the Nepali Engineers Association (NEA)

Update 18:13 UTC : Two earthquakes in one lifetime - “I survived a big earthquake twice, but it was more frightening this time”
Bhuyu Maharjan, 89, was peeling garlic on his balcony on Saturday 25 April when there was a loud noise and his house in Patan started swaying violently. He grabbed the railing, and held on tight. When the tremor got milder, he went down to his daughter’s room. He was in shock, and couldn’t move.
Maharjan was six years old in the 1934 earthquake. And although that one was 8.4 magnitude, he said last week’s quake was much more frightening, and lasted longer. When we interviewed him four months ago on the occasion of National Earthquake Safety Day he said he was lucky to be alive.

Update 09:54 UTC : China wants to reopen the China Nepal road completely - After clearing the heavily damaged Tibetan section they today entered Nepal to do the same job. This is the Xinhua report :
China's armed police officers of traffic rescue left southwestern Tibet Autonomous Region and entered Nepal for the first time on Sunday to aid earthquake relief there.
The operation, approved by the State Council and Central Military Commission, was launched after a meeting in the morning on the Chinese side of China-Nepal border at the urgent request of Nepal.
Around 1:30 p.m., 160 armed police officers and 56 units of engineering machinery entered Nepal across the Friendship Bridge that links the two countries.
Their first mission is to reopen the road connecting the border pass of Zham and Kathmandu, the Nepalese capital.
The China-Nepal Highway, with a total length of 943 kilometers including 829 km in Tibet, was severely damaged in the earthquake on April 25. Workers had cleared the Tibetan section of the highway by Friday afternoon.
According to General Fu Ling of the traffic rescue brigade, a total of 500 police officers together with 180 units of engineering machinery would be organized into three groups and a reserve team to clear the road. Geologists have also been sent to assist in the operation.
Nepalese police met their Chinese peers on the border.
Fu said the officers would observe Nepalese laws and regulations, respect local religious belief and customs, and do their best to aid quake relief.

Update 08:47 UTC : The Belgian B-Fast Search and Rescue + Medical Component team will return to Belgium on Monday because they "are useless since the very beginning". They were NOT AUTHORIZED by the authorities to visit and help not yet visited villages in the Gorkha district. The Nepal government has decided that all SaR teams have to leave the country. In the case of B-Fast Belgium also the medical component will leave Nepal. Some equipment will be left to local NGO's (tents etc)

Note from the founder of
After seeing numerous reports that NGO teams and foreign Aid teams are blocked by authorities AND international aid coordination to go to areas who have not seen Relief and Rescue for more than 1 week, i think that this should be categorized as a :

As in-depth followers of earthquakes since many years, we truly know that Relief and Rescue will never be perfect. We accept that if at least every agency and government body does it best to act as swift as possible. But knowing that aid teams were send back to their countries as "not necessary" and others from being forbidden to enter Nepal as useless, is making us mad. Relief aid coming in the country being taxed by customs and confiscating bank accounts from private relief initiatives to the relief account of the Prime Minister are absolutely horrendous.
It is impossible to calculate the fatalities due to a lack of health assistance, etc, but they will be numerous.
It maybe time for a lawyers initiative to bring those responsible for the court (in The Hague ?)

Update 08:02 UTC : A Nepali police team has pulled out the bodies of about 50 people, including some foreign trekkers, from an avalanche-hit area, officials said on Sunday, as the death toll from last month's devastating earthquake climbed to over 7,000.
None of the bodies have been identified, said Pravin Pokharel, deputy superintendent of police in the northern district of Rasuwa.

Update 07:52 UTC : Nepal authorities say that some 60 temples were destroyed
An initial assessment report from Nepal's archeology authorities showed that around 60 temples across the nation have been destroyed in the April 25 earthquake. The report from the Department of Archaeology (DoA) in the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation said on Sunday that more than 200 monuments have been partly damaged.
The authorities have been in a hard bid to collect ruins consisting of valuable materials from monument sites.
The collection and preservation process has been underway at locations including the Basantapur Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Patan Durbar Square, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Local residents and volunteers have joined the military and police personnel to search for the remaining crafted wooden beams, idols, struts and silver and copper items at the quake-jolted venues.
The earthquake has also done great harm to Nepal's tourism industry as at least 14 historic buildings have been destroyed or severely damaged, including 12 on the list of UNESCO World Heritage.

Update 07:48 UTC : Only 2% of the most urgent needs are funded.
The UNOCHA Financial Tracking Service (FTS) has reported an increase in the amount of humanitarian pledges, commitments and contributions that
have been provided for the Nepal earthquake response. As of 2 May (10:00, UTC+5:45), the total stands at $68 million.
Food Security, Shelter and NFIs, Early Recovery and Health clusters have received a total of $7.5 million to support activities requested in the
$415 Flash Appeal launched by the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) on 29 April.

Screen Shot 2015-05-03 at 09.48.19Update 07:42 UTC : Although it is hard to compare the 1934 and 2015 earthquakes, UNOCHA made already a comparison based on the current number of fatalities. Also different were the epicenters. The 2015 one occurred in the Himalaya on solid ground and the 1934 in Bihar, India on softer ground. Seismologically the triggers of both earthquakes are similar (Indian plate subducting the Eurasian plate) but location of the epicenter and wave propagation directions may have been different.

Update 07:34 UTC : Red tape delays Nepal quake disaster aid
The UN's humanitarian chief has said she is "extremely concerned" that Nepal's customs authorities are slowing the delivery of earthquake aid, as the death toll from the disaster crossed 7,000 on Sunday.
After the government ruled out finding more survivors buried in the ruins of the capital Kathmandu, the focus was shifting to delivering aid to families and others in far-flung areas of the devastated nation.
But the UN's head of humanitarian affairs Valerie Amos said she was worried the foreign aid pouring into Nepal in the wake of the impoverished country's deadliest earthquake in more than 80 years was being held up by red tape.
"I was extremely concerned to hear reports that customs was taking such a long time," Amos told AFP in Kathmandu on Saturday, saying she had asked Prime Minister Sushil Koirala to speed up customs clearance for aid materials.
"He has undertaken to ensure that happens, so I hope that from now we will see an improvement in those administrative issues."

Update 12:28 UTC : We received a couple of hours ago a telephone call from Sonam Tsering Lama who is making an SUPER URGENT APPEAL for RELIEF AID in the direct Manaslu area. Sonam wrote :

I have been contacted by the people from Lho area, Gorkha district (Manaslu area), and apparently there has only been one helicopter coming there, just to take pictures, but they have not received any help at all. There is approximately 250 children in the monastery and they are getting short of food very quickly. In the school there is around 55 children.
Water is no problem because there is a river nearby.
There is no road to get there, and the ways are blocked.
There is no need for medical assistance, as most people were outside of their houses at the moment of the earthquake.
Most houses have been destroyed and they are staying in improvised tents.
Here I send you the pictures of the monastery Palyul Jangchub Darjeeling (Lho village) and the Padmasambava School Shala (near Lho village)BEFOREthe earthquake. We don't have pictures of the present situation. They have told has that the school is completely destroyed and the monastery has been seriously damaged (the kitchen completely destroyed).
I hope you can do something about this very soon.
