  • Colina - We've only lived here for five months and have felt many earthquakes. This was the most aggressive and longest lasting of them all. The water in our pool came over the sides and our chandeliers were swinging for a long time afterwards.

  • Recoletta - Very scary, The family still shaking, was a rumbling, then the buildings shaking, ground began to move too, all were out in street, as it is also raining. Worried about after shocks. Waiting to see where it was centered from.
  • Santiago - No damage at all.
  • Santiago - Shook for a good 45 seconds to perhaps a minute. Strong shaking for at least 30 of those seconds. We are on the 10th floor and building shifted for another 15 seconds after the sound of the original shaking stopped.
  • Santiago - On 15th floor of 27 story building. Just felt the building sway back and forth, for less than a minute.
  • Santiago - Voor het eerst een echte aardbeving gevoeld. We zaten te schudden op de bank. De kast en de ramen rammelden.
  • Santiago du chili - une durée de 30 secondes environ, ressenti au 15ème étage d'un hotel
  • Valle nevado - Tremor médio, tivemos que sair do restaurante!
  • Vina del Mar - 45-60 seconds of pretty serious shaking and swaying of the building
  • Concon - On the fourth floor of an apartment building. Felt moderate shaking....everything rattling.
  • Santiago - strong shaking lights out in tall buildings in neighborhood. anything loose fell. all buildings moved
  • Santiago - Estávamos no décimo terceiro andar do hotel. A cama, as vidraças e os objetos começaram a tremer.
  • Hotel El Bosque San Sebastian - Tremor moderado. A cama, objetos e as vidraças começaram a tremer.
  • Santiago - Sem danos
  • Illapel - Was sleeping. Felt house in the mountains shake, feeling was as if somebody was pushing my bed back and forth. Lasted less than a minute at 3:30am local time.
  • Vina del Mar - Everything in the kitchen broke.
  • Valparaiso - Dry wall in spots fell from walls.
  • Santiago - Felt weak at first, but suddenly got very strong. Shook the house for a good 45 - 60 seconds, tried going downstairs and was very wobbly as the house was shaking pretty bad. Family went outside where it was raining and our dog was nervous as well, very scary and quite strong shaking.
  • Valparsaiso - I live in old building and had some spots where dry wall fell and cracked pretty bad.
  • Santiago - balanco mucho mi predio, y vivo en lo 16 andar.
  • Renaca - Noisy, scarey shake with minor damage throughout the house -- and bookcases nearly completely emptied.
  • Santiago, Chile - noisy shaking about 8 second but no damage to property

MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.

Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :

Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.

Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).

Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
