Update May 14 : An article in local panamaamerica mentions that (at the time of writing, yesterday evening) 62 aftershocks have been  recorded. The many aftershocks (and the ones to come) feared people a lot. The quake caused cracking in schools in the districts of David, Resume, Alanje, Baru and non-structural affectations in public buildings, including the pediatric wards of Obaldía José Domingo, located in the city of David. This is surely only part of the damage. In the meantime the aftershocks are still going on with a couple of +5 quakes.

Update 13:41 UTC : Panama TV is reporting that many walls collapsed in the Western Part of the country. Additionally, a water pipe broke in San Cristobal which set a number of houses inundated. In Chiriqui the facade from the National Bank of Panama was damaged.
The area felt many aftershocks so far.

Update 07:04 UTC : The map below shows the location of the epicenter in function of the (complicated) tectonics of that area - The Yellow line is the Convergent fault or the subduction zone where the Oceanic Cocos Plate dives below the Caribbean Plate. The Blue line the transform zone with a mainly horizontal movement.

Update 06:47 UTC : It is currently the middle of the night in Central America. Based on the shaking numbers we are receiving from our readers (in back office) people are confirming what we expected from the beginning : Mex. a light shaking.

Update 06:44 UTC : ER does not expect serious damage from this earthquake - Main reason : Distance to the coast

  • Daniel Flores - Laying in bed and felt my bed movin. Neighborhood dogs started going bonkers. I was tired but now I'm too nervous to go to sleep
  • David - I was sleeping and felt my bed, shaking took me a couple seconds to realize it was an earthquake (since I was sleeping). Heard my dishes and glasses clinging in the kitchen. Lasted less than a minute. No feeling of aftershock.
  • Volcan, Chiriqui - Definite shaking felt and rattling of house at 1:30 am local time. No damage.
  • Grecia - Lamps swinging. Unusually long duration
  • David - None that I know of as yet. Strongest I have experienced in 7 years of living here
  • Alto Boquette - Shook for 30 to 40 seconds at 0135 local time (+5). No apparent damage
  • Panama City - I was unfortunately working late at my computer and felt my chair moving. I thought my son had woken up and snuck up on me. I heard the walls creaking in my 15 story apartment building and my ceiling fan rattling. The shaking went on for about 30-60 seconds. Everybody else was sleeping in my home and apparently did not wake up.
  • Isla Colon - No daños Todo se meneo como una enorme gelatina
  • Rincon Largo. - Temblor fuerte.... Movimiento brusco de la tierra....por aprox. 1 minuto... Mucho miedo...
  • Panama City - I was at my desk when my parrot woke up and became agitated. A few minutes later I felt a slow, steady shaking, weak enough for me not to realize it was an earthquake at first, until I noticed my computer screen rattling slightly. It lasted for several seconds and felt like the quake shifted from a back and forth to a circular motion near the end. I looked at my clock and it was 1:38 AM. It was a bit disorienting at first, because I wasn't sure if it was really happening or just my imagination.
  • Bocus town - About 20 sec. Strongest quake I have ever felt. Glad no wave problem as I live on water.
  • San Ramon, Costa Rica - Seemed like a long duration of almost one minute of mild shaking around 1am in Costa Rica.
  • Boquete - Woke up as room and bed was strongly shaking. Lasted about 40 seconds. Also heard rumbling sound like freight train passing.
  • Puerto Viejo - I was awakened in the night by a strong shaking motion as the bed seemed to be moving back and forth several inches, lasting about 30 seconds. No visible damage but our electrical power was out briefly.
  • Cerro Punta - Woke up immediately, I knew it was a quake right away. Started out with rough shaking, then felt dizzy from the swaying sensation. no damage.
  • Jarmallio - Woke us up. No damage.
  • Panamá - Me levanto de la cama
  • Volcan - In bed. Unable to sleep. Sound of a large transport truck rumbling through started at 1:37 a.m. and extended for about 40 sec. Realized it was an earthquake. It awoke my wife from her deep sleep. Bed was swaying and so was the casita; hard to determine what direction everything was going in. It reminded me of when at sea. No apparent damage, although I had expected with the shaking of bottles in our open cupboards, things would start falling.
  • Puerto Jimenez - Woke to bed shaking. Heavy, long waves of shaking. Have a piece of art hung and it was swaying a good foot in each direction. Seemed to last 40 to 60 seconds. Waited, felt no after shocks. Watched shoreline for wave change or water change, noticed none.
  • Puerto Viejo - Starkes Beben keine große Schäden bekannt
  • Jaco - In bed about 12:35ish, felt the bed swaying back and forth and continued maybe half a minute, then I heard the coat hangers in the closet swinging and rattling. Neighbourhood dogs started barking a lot for several minutes.
  • Boquete - No damage at all. It woke me up from a dead sleep and only lasted seconds

MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?

Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).

People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
