  • Chiang Mai - lasted 20 to 30 seconds .. then happened again less
  • chiang mai - no property damage just moderate shaking like on a small, still boat hit by large waves. lasted maybe 10-20 seconds. didn't realize what it was until it was over. very slowy and gentle rocking like someone shaking you to wake you up.
  • Chiangmai - Felt light quake at around 6 pm
  • Chiang Mai - things fell off some shelves..lasted about 6 seconds
  • peang luang - The building shaking. Lampost shaking obviously. Can feel the road crawling.
  • Chiang Mai - Rolling quake lasting slightly over 1 minute at 18:10 hrs Bangkok time. Slightly less violent than the Sylmar quake felt 30 miles away. 1 aftershock just felt, 18:20

  • Bangkok - Was on the 24th floor of the hotel, and everyone in the lounge felt the shake.
  • Chiang Mai - No damage but the house was shaking back and forth for about 30 secs
  • chiang mai - Building was shaking in the old city and people were moving out to the street. Nothing falling but the shake lasted a good 10 seconds or so. Very gentle to start then a series of good shakes followed by some gentle swaying. Shop signs were swinging.

  • Fang, Chiang Mai - I heard a rumble like thunder and then the house began to vibrate. Next the ground started swaying back and forth and continued for about ten seconds. A few minutes later, the ground swayed again. I felt two after shocks.

  • Bangkok - On the 24th floor of building in downtown Bangkok. Felt the building move and door and curtain were moving around us.

  • Chiang Kham - I felt my whole house shake strongly. However my house is on stilts so it might have made it seem much more dramatic than it was. I was worried the house would collapse so I ran out. Felt a smaller wave several minutes later.

  • Chiang Mai - at first I thought there was an animal on the roof, because of the noise. Then the windows started shaking and the whole building swayed slightly. So I ran outside, 20 seconds later another one came when I was sitting down, a wave like sensation rippled through the whole garden and the plants shaking, birds screaming and the building trembling.

  • Chiang Mai - Sounded like thunder. Then noticed room shaking slightly for about 20 seconds or so. The shaking and noise woke her from her sleep.

  • Bangkok - Apartment on 21st floor of (32 floor) high rise rocked to and fro. Hanging light fixtures and clothing swayed for about two minutes. No damage in apartment.
  • Chiang Mai - Ground was swaying, moved my tables apart, I could even see the windows trembling but no damage. Overall lasted about 30 seconds, 2 strong jolts

  • CHIANG Mai - Shaking of Windows & objects in house, my wife was indoors and had noticeable experience. I was in garden with dogs and thought I was having dizzy spell - notable ground movement. Caused a swell in the swimming pool with water coming over sides.
  • Hang Dong Chiang mai - I felt my bed shaking and when i stood up i felt the ground shaking.
  • Bangkok - I live on 18th floor. I heard a 'crack' noise and then felt whole building oscillate. Curtains and light fittings moving quite a bit. Last around 30 seconds. Scary!!

  • Sansai,Chiang Mai - Windows started rattling then concrete floor was undulating, 2nd wave caused roof tiles to rattle significantly for about 10 seconds. No aftershock felt

  • Maetaeng - The quake appeared to last 60 to 90 seconds here (45 km north of Chiangmai) with the second shake stronger than the first shake. No apparent damage here or at our property in Chiangrai but Mae Suay may have had significant damage.

  • Chiang mai - Nun ich kam gerade aus dem Bad und setzte mich vor meinen Laptop, als es an fing ich dachte erst mir ist schwindelig, doch dann wurde es stärker und meine Sachen im Zimmer vielen um. Ich schaute raus zum Balkong und sah wie er er sich bewegte hin und her schwang. Nahm nur meinen Schlüssel und lief mit den anderen Gästen die Treppen hinunter ins Freie. Es war mein erstes Erdbeben und hoffe es ist mein letztes.

  • Chiang mai - En piscina en primera planta hotel junto al mercado nocturno. Se sintió trueno y casi de inmediato un leve balanceo creciente. Al máximo el movimiento era bastante grande, mareante.   • Sansai - Moderate shaking at 1809. Lasted for about 15 seconds. Our water garden had a large wave which splashed water out of the pond (water is about 4" from top). There was a small aftershock. Noteworthy: my handing crystals shook and swayed lightly for about 10 minutes after the 1st shock! Started 1805 in CR and then 1809 in CM; down to Lampang and then on to Bangkok. No damage.
  • Chiang Mai - It was very scary for me as it was my first, things fell of my wall unit and a few paintings on the wall Aldo fell.

  • Chiang Rai - I was on the 17th hole par 3 at Santiburi Golf Course. We just tee'ed off & then heard this thumping sound like a steam train getting closer & closer, louder & louder the whole ground moved like a ripple. The lake next to us bubbled like a spa sending fish into a frenzy. All the trees shook like a huge wind was blowing only no wind. It lasted only 5/10 sec & we all stood in shock. That sound remains in my head we all felt queasy, almost like motion sickness & it lasted for some time there after!
  • Chiang Mai - No damage right here. Felt shaking on 7th floor. Could tell it was definitely an earthquake.
  • Chiangmai - Since after midnight, the tremors had been constant every 2 hours lasting for 5 seconds. But by 6am, the intervals were getting shorter, every 10mins or lasting 5secs for at least an hour. But the tremors hasn't gotten stronger. Should there be a nation alert?
  • Chiang Rai - I was driving from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai at the time and probably arrived near Mae Suai just after it had happened - quite scary coming round a bend to see half of the road falling away

  • Mae Chan - We heard what sounded like a freight train approaching and felt our house start to shake. We ran out of the house and the quake lasted about 15 seconds. We had no damage and felt only one strong aftershock the following morning.

  • Chiang Rai - The quake happened quickly, with no damage, but the house slightly waved a bit, and the water sloshed about in the pool. A few pictures on the walls were moved a bit. All in all, not severe, and hopefully it was a light quake with no injuries.

  • Chiang Rai - Earthquake seemed to last less than ten seconds. Moderate shaking, but nothing fell down in the house, likely due to the shortness of the quake. Went out in the street to talk to neighbors and my girlfriend went back inside to get something and ran back outside a minute later saying it was happening again, but we didn't feel it at all on the street.

  • Mae Sai (Chiang Rai) - May 5 2014, 18:10 (6:10 pm) local time. Heard loud noises like construction piling and thunder which got louder, followed by severe to violent shaking of the building, glass doors and curtains, lasting over 60 secs. Several aftershocks felt for the next 5 hours.
  • Chiang Rai - I'm still feeling slight shivers in my resort... The room is suddenly making noises of shiverings.. its only happening for 1-2secs... the windows r making noise it was quite noticable few mins ago..

  • Yangon, Myanmar - Slight swaying on 15th floor. Chandelier in main lobby was swaying afterward. Quake lasted 5 seconds
  • Huay Xai, Laos - Geen schade, licht beving van 10 sec
  • Huay Xai, Laos - a gentle shaking for about 20s. I was near a wat when the monks were praying. it got us a bit scared and ran out to open space. A few weak aftershocks, but no damage to buildings or road have been seen.
  • Yangon, Myanmar - No damage but could definitely feel the office floor moving up on 11th floor.
  • Vientiane - 6.10pm 5/5/14 work colleagues on 7th floor reported building swaying for less than 30 seconds.
  • Jinghong - No damage. We live on the 5th floor of a, recently built, 17 storey building which resinated for a few minutes. Hope they used the correct reinforcement concrete.

    MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
    Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
    Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
