  • Berkeley, just south of Campus - For a 3.1, I am surprised at how violent the shaking was. Because of the intensity, I did not experience the common "what was that?" response, which often happens when experiencing a minor quake--I knew what it was as it happened.

  • Berkeley, CA - I was in the College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley on the 8th floor. Building shook pretty hard for a split second then stopped

  • Oakland - How come the earthquake at 9:30 wasn't reported on October 6. I did feel that one. But the one that was reported October 7 at 4:36 AM I did not feel I was must have been fast asleep. Did anyone feel the earthquake at 9:30 PM or around 9:30 PM on Sunday night October 6?

  • Oakland, CA - I had trouble categorizing the quake using your descriptions. I was awake and felt it a as decided shaking lasting probably less than 2 seconds, immediately recognizable as an earthquake, considerably more than would be felt from any heavy truck passing by. On the other hand there was absolutely no rattling of objects in my apartment.

    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
