Strong very dangerous earthquake below Lake Albert Region (DR Congo and Uganda)

Update July 5 - 15:58 UTC : We encourage our readers to read a very good article from IRINNEWS "Uganda ill-prepared for a major earthquake" which gives very good advise for the future. Click here to be linked with this article.

Update July 5 - 08:30 UTC : Uganda's New Vision titled earlier today : Oil not cause of earthquake, an interesting article everyone should read. As said earlier in this article, we also do NOT think that oil drilling is related to this earthquake. As nobody can prove his point of view with facts, the discussion will unfortunately remain for a long time.

Update July 5 - 08:24 UTC : We are unsure about the damage which can be seen on the NTV video below. Is it from the first earthquake on July 2 or the one on July 3 or are it archive video recording (at least we cannot imagine damage of an earthquake since a couple of years). If you know when it was recorded, please tell us. At we are delighted about this video which is very informative. We hope people will follow up the advice to build their houses with a high earthquake resistance. We are very sure that it will happen again, the only thing we do not know (nobody in the world) when it will happen and how strong it will be + a good advice from our part : NEVER believe not skilled people who are telling you what will happen in the future. The present level of science knowledge CANNOT predict earthquakes !

Update 15:02 UTC : No trace of any serious damage description until now, only some vague comments on cracks in houses in the Hoima district, which is confirmed in a way by the reader comment below. If anyone of our readers knows of eventual damage inflicted by friends, relatives or referred to in the local news, please tell us (also include the source of the news)

Update 13:13 UTC : is mentioning that a n number of residents claimed that it is related to the oil exploration in the region. Geoffrey Okema, a local resident in Nwoya district claimed that the earth quake was in relation to the oil exploration in Nwoya district.
Remark : ER does not think that this earthquake was provoked by other than seismic activity.

Testimony from an reader living close to the shores of Lake Albert :

It was around 1:30 pm i was kind of dozing after along days work, I heard a huge noise like heavy wind, only to see my bed shaking and the house roof literally going off. I ask the Ugandan Government to install early warming systems in the risky Albertine areas. Also the Government should inform people if we are in danger here in Hoima and other regions. Joseph Oima, Kyangwali, just a few kms from Lake Albert

Update 10:15 UTC : To explain what happened in detail is too technical, but many people will have a hard time to understand why 2 sides of a spreading fault in the rift zone can trigger earthquakes. Simplified, the same process is happening in the middle of the oceans were 2 plates are spreading in the opposite direction. The graphic below shows how stress can accumulate and finally break apart when the stress becomes so big that it is released quickly (earthquake). Fault lines are mainly irregular (zigzagging)

Update 06:51 UTC : Cracks in houses in the Hoima district is all the news we could find locally so far. Keep this page open if you want further news as we will be scanning all reports all day long.

Update 22:43 UTC : This aftershock is strong enough to further damage the already damaged houses. We think and hope that people living along the Lake Albert shores will not stay in their houses during the night. The area is really unstable and nobody can predict what will happen the next couple of days.

Update 22:38 UTC : Geofon reports the aftershock with a M5.1 Magnitude at a depth of 10 km.

It looks that we have a strong aftershock based on the renewed visitor stream.

Update 21:50 UTC : Based on our experience, we think it will take another 6 to 8 hours before we will be getting news from the lake shores located in a 30 km radius around the epicenter. Lets hope nobody was hurt.

Update 21:48 UTC : Lake Albert is the northernmost of the chain of lakes in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift, covering parts of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania. It extends from the northern end of Lake Albert to the southern end of Lake Tanganyika. The geographical term includes the valley and the surrounding mountains. The Albertine Rift and the mountains are the result of tectonic movements that are gradually splitting the Somali Plate away from the rest of the African continent.

Update 20:52 UTC : The USGS shaking map below confirms what we had expected just after this earthquake, a strong MMI6 along the epicenter lake shore, especially in Uganda.

Screen Shot 2013-07-03 at 22.48.29

Update 20:46 UTC : It will normally take many hours before the local press will be able to collect damaging data.

Update 20:39 UTC :
17067 people are living within a radius of 20 km from the epicenter
715324 people are living within an radius of 50 km around the epicenter

Update 20:36 UTC : The nearest populated places are: Kabanda (15km). The closest civilian airport is Bunia (70km).

Update 20:34 UTC : An earthquake in Lake Kivu in 2008 killed 38 people and left 717 injured. 99 houses were reported destroyed. Magnitude M5.9

Update 20:23 UTC : The Focal Mechanism of this earthquake suggests NO seiche in the lake. A seiche is a big wave generated by the earthquake. Such seiches can be very damaging.

Update 20:20 UTC : USGS reports now a Magnitude of Mw5.7 at a depth of 9.8 km

Update 20:09 UTC : A Many people are talking about a shaking of 20 to 30 seconds. Thats long. The longer the shaking of an earthquake lasts, the more damage will be inflicted.

Update 20:06 UTC : A reader in Kampala wrote us : The bed in which i was sitting started shaking and i felt as if iam dizzy. It took few seconds to realise that it is EQ It happened at about 10.30 PM Kampala time on 3rd july 2013 and we rushed out in open. The promenade bricks down had also loosened and moved

Update 20:06 UTC : T The earthquake happened at a very bad hour as many people will have been sitting in their houses watching TV

Update 20:04 UTC : The focal mechanism of this earthquake looks like this is a spreading fault earthquake. Two parts of the fault going out of each other. This spreading is however not regular and the irregulkar parts are generating the earthquake ads the hang and only break when the stress gets too big. We will try to explain with a graphic a littke later.

Screen Shot 2013-07-03 at 22.49.43

Update 19:58 UTC : This is by far one of the strongest and most dangerous earthquakes since the last couple of years. Both shores of the lake are at risk for damage and injuries.

Update 19:56 UTC : The earthquake was surely also felt in Rwanda as we got a lot of readers from Rwanda in the site shortly after it happened.

Update 19:51 UTC : The MMI shaking values we are receiving are slightly higher than yesterday's values and as yesterdays earthquake generated some damage, this one will be damaging too.

Update 19:45 UTC : calls this earthquake VERY DANGEROUS

This is the second earthquake in 2 days. today's earthquake was much more powerful than yesterday's. Check yesterday's damage here.
Epicenter is luckily along the fault below Lake Albert.
