Strong earthquake - Honduras - power outages.

–Written in addition by Jens Skapski.

UPDATE:- No major damage has yet occurred. Good news, as there has only been minor damage (small cracks) and a few displaced temporarily due to panic and checks. This does not achieve CATDAT Orange status.

UPDATE:- Power outages have been restored in several locations.

UPDATE:- In the municipalities of Jocon, Yoro and Olanchito there have been reported cracks in some buildings and homes. Residents of western Colombia, Ocotepeque (70km E), Santa Barbara, Copán and Lempira did not feel the quake.

UPDATE:- In addition, there was panic in the town of Tela (probably also due to the electricity, internet and telephone disruption).

UPDATE:- Following the quake, the Yoro Region Fire Department reported damage to the walls of their barracks. (Likely there are cracks)

UPDATE:- The earthquake interrupted the electrical systems and telephone service in the city port of Tela. There have also been scattered reports of power outages in other locations.

UPDATE:- The felt intensities close to the epicenter are between IV and V so it is likely that there will be good news and the hypocenter will be reassessed.

UPDATE:- USGS has reviewed the hypocenter and has placed it at the standard shallow earthquake depth of 10km after simply giving a value of 1km earlier via the simplified station measurement.

UPDATE:- The earthquake occurred in the north of Honduras, but as yet no damage reports. The Mexico seismological service has given a magnitude assessment of Ml6.1.

This earthquake has occurred close to San Juan Pueblo. Unfortunately this means that the exposure will be reasonably high within a very short distance in terms of the USGS epicenter. Local sources are also being looked at, as any difference could mean less danger for the residents.

MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.

    Structures :
Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.

Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
