Todays earthquake was a little closer to the coast than many other ones in the same fault area. This is a irregular divergent tectonic area. The irregularities are creating stress which increases when the plates are separating from each other. When the stress grows too big and earthquake is triggered. Earthquakes up to M6+ are a possibility in this area.
Additionally the separating relatively thin oceanic plates are responsible for volcanic action at the sea bed. Lava is found on the sea bed at many locations of this faulting area.
