Strong earthquake near the coast of La Paz, South Baja California, Mexico.
A magnitude 6.2 (USGS) earthquake struck 72km from La Paz, the capital of South Baja California, Mexico at a shallow depth of 10km. USGS calculates that 208,000 people would had felt a V on the mercalli scale (Moderate shaking). The SCN (National Seismological Service) is giving a magnitude of 6.0 at a depth of 15km, the earthquake was well felt all around La Paz, Los Mochis and even as far as Culiacan.
There has been aftershocks following the earthquake, the strongest being a 4.8M.
The government has suspended classes in all the state of South Baja California to check if there was damage.

Moderate earthquake in the greater San Francisco area (Mendocino county)
Greater San Fransico area is somewhat exaggerated as the distance to the epicenter was more than 100 km, but based on the visiting numbers in our site, this earthquake was also felt in the Bay area.
the epicenter of this earthquake was almost below Ukiah and the US 101.  People driving on the 101 will have hardly felt it, but the people living in or near Ukiah will certainly have experienced shaking.
We invite them to to tell their experiences below.
The shallow hypocenter (location of the breaking point in the underground) is the reason that the shaking was well felt at the surface. M 4.5 is one of the stronger earthquakes in Central / Northern California this year.
Update 15:41 UTC : We have received reports of light to moderate shaking from the area (MMI IV - V), this was confirmed at USGS
Almost nobody in the world (and we guess also in the USA) will know Ukiah. Ukiah is a small town with a population of 1,075 (last census).  Ukiah serves as the city center for Mendocino County and much of neighboring Lake County. In 1996, Ukiah was ranked the #1 best small town to live in California and the sixth-best place to live in the United States.

Faults to the north of San Fransico

Update 15:59 UTC  : Maacama fault probably responsible for today's earthquake

The Maacama Fault is mostly a right-lateral strike-slip fault that lies north of Santa Rosa and the immediate San Francisco Bay Area and extends as far north as Ukiah. It connects to the Rodgers Creek Fault through a complex set of faults between Santa Rosa and Healdsburg, and is thought to be the northward continuation of the Hayward-Rodgers Creek Fault System. The 2007 Working Group for California Earthquake Probability assigned a total slip rate on the Maacama Fault of approximately 9 mm/yr (1/3 inches/yr), based on the assumption that it continues the slip on the Hayward-Rodgers Creek Fault northward. The central and northern sections of the fault have been observed to accommodate approximately 7 mm/yr (1/4 inch/year) of creep along it. The Maacama Fault parallels and overlaps the Rodgers Creek Fault, in a geometry that is causing the ground between the faults to subside. In Sonoma County north of Healdsburg, the Maacama Fault is largely obscured by massive landslides where it passes east of Alexander Valley. The 2007 Working Group for California Earthquake Probability combined the Maacama and the Garberville Faults into single a 181-km (110 mile) long fault and determined M7.5 as the maximum magnitude for this combined fault system. There is very little known about the seismic history or earthquake cycle of the Maacama Fault, and as such recurrence intervals are uncertain. Update 16:16 UTC : The mainshock was followed by a weak M2.4 aftershock 10 minutes later. This weak shock will probably not have been felt by many people (earthquakes below M2.5 are only felt in ideal conditions)
Update 17:06 UTC : The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday morning that no reports of damage had yet been made. Citizens were encouraged to report damage to the Mendocino County Office of Emergency Services at 707-467-6497 or by email at OES@co.mendocino.ca.us

Earthquake in Tajikistan / Afghanistan
This earthquake will probably be harmless if the earthquake preliminary data are correct (M5.1 at a depth of 33 km).
Kunduz is the biggest city in the area. The area is often struck  not only by moderate earthquakes but also by more powerful earthquakes.
33km (21mi) S of Khanabad, Afghanistan and 48km (30mi) SE of Kunduz, Afghanistan

seismograph - recordingUseful information to read this daily earthquake list
This earthquake list covers important earthquakes in the world.
If a more detailed page is present, the earthquake line will be linked to the detailed page.
For your comfort, we will provide in most cases a Google Satellite Map to give you an idea where the earthquake struck, which terrain it happened and if villages or cities are located in the immediate vicinity. The multi-source approach has been setup to compare values as seismology is not an exact science and needs a lot of calculations. The reference for the time zone is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, also called GMT). Color explanation if we add some details above the list :
green color = NOT dangerous for damage or injuries
orange color = MODERATE risk for damage or injuries
red color = CONSIDERABLE risk for damage or injuries

    Shaking Strength *
MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
