Volcano activity of August 26-27, 2012 - Soputan, Iceland, Souffriere Hills, Fuego, Santiaguito, Tungurahua, Batu Tara, Sakurajima, Bagana, Nyiragongo and Popocatepetl

This (almost) daily post intends to follow up the activity changes of volcanoes all over the world.
This post is written by geologist Richard Wilson who specializes in Volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck. Please feel free to tell us about new or changed activity if we haven't written about it. -

August 26-27 , 2012 volcano activity

We have no images from the glacial flood of the Vatnajökull. The Icelandic civil defense has published no further reports which means that the flood has remained as expected. The seismogram shows again a number of earthquakes in the same area than Saturday. RÚV was again interviewing an IMO specialist, in this case re. the water system. Conductivity and consistence of the water indicate – as mentioned before – that there is something going on under Vatnajökull. There is also a clear H2S smell, which implies not to approach the upper course of Skaftá (poisonous gases), whereas the lower course is not touched by that.
IMO thinks that there will perhaps not come a real glacier run now, but only some water which is leaking from the Skaftá cauldron.

MVO reports that activity at the Soufrière Hills Volcano is low, although seismic activity has increased slightly (week August 17 - 24)

In Guatemala both Fuego and Santaguito volcanoes are continuing the same eruption pattern

A strong eruption occurred Sunday at 16:00 UTC at the Soputan volcano in Salawesi. The alert level of Soputan was increased by PVMBG on Sunday and is now in Siaga level. VAAC expects volcanic ash to climb to 40000 ft (12 km). The volcano started his eruption on Sunday until Monday. Villagers said that lava was noticed on the volcano slopes. People in the villages surrounding the volcano also complain about very high temperatures.

Activity at Tungurahua volcano, Ecuador has subsided the last hours. VAAC Washington does not plan to publish new reports at the present stage of the activity
