Volcano activity of July 18, 2012 - Merapi, Nyiragongo, Bagana, Dukono, Popocatepetl, Fuego, Pacaya and Sakurajima

This (almost) daily post intends to follow up the activity changes of volcanoes all over the world.
This post is written by geologist Richard Wilson who specializes in Volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck. Please feel free to tell us about new or changed activity if we haven't written about it. -

July 18, 2012 volcano activity

Volcano-tectonic seismicity remains high at Popocatepetl (Mexico) today (events on the seismogram between 15 UTC and 18 UTC are repeating due to a software "glitch", not natural causes). Exhalations of gas and ash are also more numerous, averaging three to four per hour.

After being elevated for several days, seismicity at our "Featured Volcano" Pacaya (Guatemala) has returned to low levels.

At nearby Guatemalan Fuego volcano, elevated tremor appears to be subsiding after some eruptive activity yesterday. (station FG3)

John Seach (Volcano Live) reports a small collapse occurred at the 2009-2010 lava dome at Merapi volcano (Indonesia) on 15 July. No further activity has occurred at the volcano.

Nyiragongo volcano (DR Congo) is showing a very strong SO2 plume today. We could also notice some faint SO2 cloud at Dukono volcano (Halmahera, Indonesia) and above Bagana volcano (Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea)

Activity observed by satellites

VAAC Tokyo reported a number of explosions at Sakurajima volcano (Japan)
