Earthquake overview : A moderately dangerous earthquake struck 40 km out of the Bengkulu area coast. A preliminary magnitude of 5.9 at a depth of 39.9 km will be perceived in a very wide area in Sumatra.

Update 17:21 UTC : People of Bengkulu were so scared of the tremor that they almost jumped out of their houses.

Update : Based on theoretical models, 215,000 people will have experienced a V MMI moderate shaking. 1,592,000 people will have felt a light shaking. These MMI values are based on the preliminary data from USGS.

Update : Bengkulu will have experienced a MMI IV shaking (light shaking). Bengkulu has a population of 340,000

Update : A V shaking MMI (moderate shaking) is expected along the coast line.

Update 11:30 UTC : BMKG has immediately reported that a tsunami (even locally) is excluded

Update : different numbers from the Indonesian seismological agency BMKG. The magnitude is less severe at 5.7 but the depth is reported as a lot shallower @ 10 km.

Update : The preliminary parameters of this earthquake are indicating a very moderate risk along the coast of Sumatra
