Important Update 10/10-17:44 UTC :
Yesterday's earthquake has been classified as a new event by insurers.
People who have new, or worsened, damage as a result of yesterday's event will need to lodge a new claim with EQC within three months of the event. The deadline for these claims is January 9, 2012.

Update 09:48 UTC :  Police have not received calls for serious damage. People are reporting though that many items did fall from shelves inside their houses.

Update 09:23 UTC :  We reported earlier that all communication lines remained untouched by the aftershock, but there were reports from Parklands and Northwood that communication was lost for a while.

Update 09:05 UTC :  Most people in Christchurch have forgotten the aftershock for the remaining time of the All Blacks game  AND thank God they are winning! 18-10

USGS: 4.7 @ 4.4 km
EMSC: 4.7 @ 4 km
GFZ: not yet lested

Update 08:38 UTC :  Felt reports are indicating that power and internet lines were NOT lost this time, a very good sign that probably NO serious damage or injuries will have been inflicted

Update 08:32 UTC :  Although Christchurch has not been free of aftershocks since the first major earthquake in 2010, today's aftershock has been felt as the strongest since many weeks and is a serious reminder that the faulting zones are not yet stabilized.

Update: there are big differences reported in between the data of USGS and GEONET (4.7 vs 5.5).  Some data might be changed by both agencies as they are preliminary and will be recalculated soon.
