The quake struck on Wednesday, August 24 at 17:46 UTC ( 12:46 PM local time). It was previously registered as a magnitude 6.8 quake but later recalculated as a magnitude 7.0. Due to it's depth - 145.1 km (90 miles) it was felt on a wide scale, even in some nearby countries like Ecuador. Telephone and power lines were down for a while near the epicenter area, where the shaking was more severe. It was very well felt in LIMA, the capital of PERU, approximately 550 km ( 350 miles) from the epicenter. A felt report from there says "“I was at the office in san isidro in a 5th floor. No noise at all but it waved, we all were evacuated. After 30 minutes we all went back to work. But my husband was in my house in La Molina and he felt a moderate to strong shaking and very noisy.” Local authorities said that the mining and energy operations were not affected. Later there were some injuries reported from

Chandigarh, where two people suffered injuries after their house collapsed. Also 18 injuries reported from Cockaigne schools where students panicked and they were running out of their classes. A few of them suffered serious injuries and they are still in the hospital (Miluska Gonzáles Sánchez - 14 / Magaly Hinostroza Rodrígue - 14 / Yamini Rivas Lino - 12 years old).

Between the towns affected by the quake are: Chacaybamba, Uchubamba where people were isolated because phone lines were down in the area. In Monoramba the quake caused a landslide and left residents without power and communication possibilities. Another landslide was reported from Maracana. According to a local paper, La Republica, a woman died of nerve crisis during the shake. Her identity is unknown.

The earthquake was followed by a magnitude 5.3 aftershock  at 18:16:51 UTC (01:16:51 PM at the epicenter), depth 128.5 km (79.8 miles).

Gualaceo (Ecuador) (705 km NW from epicenter) - I was laying down, and the dog became restless.  He came over to me, and just then, the couch and the floor lamp swayed back and forth a few times, but nothing actually fell.  No doubt that it was an earthquake, though.  And the time of the quake in Peru is exactly correct.
