Moderately dangerous shallow earthquake.
Due to the very shallow hypocenter some damage may be possible.
There are reports of rockslides along a highway following the quake.
This earthquake follows two smaller quakes that hit the area earlier in the day:
- a magnitude 4.6 quake was recorded at 5:30 p.m. and a magnitude 2.9 quake just before 8 a.m.

UPDATE 20:36 UTC : BMKG, the (very reliable) Indonesian seismological service reports a magnitude of 6.2 at a depth of only 10 km (but below the sea).  Luckily NO tsunami risk however.
Moderately dangerous earthquake approx. 50 km out of the Sumatra and Java coast
Max. predicted theoretical shaking is V MMI (moderate shaking).
Additionally we do not see many Indonesian people coming on line which means that they are not very much concerned.
897 people have felt a V MMI, 220,000 people will experience a light shaking and 600,000 people a weak shaking.
On 01/06/1980 had a similar earthquake measuring 6 magnitude at only 47 km from the current epicenter. There were NO shaking deaths at that time.
