Science (using earthquakes for power)
While it is no doubt theoretically possible to generate electricity by harnessing the kinetic energy of shifting tectonic plates below the Earth’s crust, pulling it off from a practical standpoint would be a real logistical challenge—not to mention prohibitively expensive compared to harnessing other forms of energy, renewable or otherwise. $$$

Japan (JMA tsunami observation)
The tsunami caused by the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake on 11th March 2011 inflicted massive damage to the tsunami and tide level observation stations in the Pacific coast of Tohoku region and northern part of Kanto region (Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi Fukushima and Ibaraki Prefectures). $$$

China (living in dangerous Sichuan)
Amanda Schmidt, an assistant professor of geology at Oberlin College, writes from Sichuan Province, China. As we climbed into the truck this morning, I noted that the weather was cool and breezy and it seemed like it might rain. I even remembered my rain coat, not wanting to repeat the soaking I got in yesterday’s late-afternoon thunderstorm. After surviving the harrowing 15-minute drive up a road that is actively sliding off the mountain only four years after it was completed, we climbed out of the truck, collected our bags and arranged to be picked up in the evening. $$$

Japan (Tsunami sediments studying)
BGS scientists visited north-east Japan in May and June to study the area devastated by the tsunami caused by the Great Tohoku earthquake of 11 March 2011. In May, they joined an international team studying sediments laid down by the tsunami. The research will lead to a better understanding of the magnitude of past tsunamis and the frequency with which they occur. $$$

Japan (visit Secretary-General UN Ban Ki-Moon)
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will depart on Saturday for a trip that will take him to Japan, where he will visit Fukushima to see first-hand the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami that struck earlier this year, and to the Republic of Korea. $$$
