Ferrara (Italy) earthquake July 17 : minor damage reported

Earthquake Overview : At 20:30 Italian time, a moderate shallow earthquake shook fiercely the Ferrara area, sending people out of their houses in fear of aftershocks.  The very populated area had a fresh memory of the destructive l'Aquila earthquake where on April 6  2009; 308 people were killed. @ Earthquake-Report.com we are always alerted if a magnitude 5 earthquake hits a Mediterranean country, including Italy.

UPDATE : In Poggio Rusco, the bell tower of the church was damaged. Other reports talk of some damaged chimneys.
The railway line from Venice to Emilia Romagna was stopped for about 2 hours to allow Railway personnel to inspect the lines. No damage was found.

UPDATE : An INGV seismologist  said that the max. MMI reported was VI, although their own map is only showing V colors.  They expect serious damage only at an MMI VII.

UPDATE : EMSC has received a lot of Felt Reports. Here are a few of them, with thanks to EMSC. We encourage people to send us their Felt experiences with the form below.
Giacciano con Baruchella (Italy) (13 km E from epicenter) : The earthquake resulted in horizontal movement, has not caused any damage. The initial effect was similar to the passage of large trucks on the road nearby, but within about 5-6 seconds of increased up to make visible the oscillations of windows and creaking noises. Some have moved light ornaments.
Revere (Italy) (13 km W from epicenter) : the shock was significant, the electricity went off for a couple of minutes. Even the telephone seemed to be interrupted
Cento (Italy) (34 km S from epicenter) : As I walked, I felt a rocking motion to the point of feeling out of place. Several people have noticed.
Verona (Italy) (52 km NW from epicenter) : It has been surprisingly weak compared to others, considering the epicentre is slightly more than 40 kilometers from here.
Verona (Italy) (52 km NW from epicenter) : Sitting in front of my pc, the earthquake has been weak but anyway I felt it clearly for 6-7 seconds.

UPDATE : The area of today's earthquake has NO recent history of major earthquakes (6 or higher).

UPDATE : The earthquake was felt as a weak shaking from as far as Siena to the South, Bolzano to the north, Torino to the west and Venice to the east.

UPDATE : MMI intensities were predicted to be max. V.  INGV, the Italian specialists, show a max. of V MMI (moderate shaking) on their intensity map and almost above the epicenter.

UPDATE : Data from other seismological agencies than USGS :
INVG (Italy) : M 4.7 @ 8.1 km
EMSC : M 4.8 @ 8 km
GFZ : M 4.5 @ 10 km

UPDATE : the area had 1 foreshock measuring 3.1 @ a depth of 1.4 km, and 2 aftershocks respectively 2.8 and 2.3 @ depths of 10 and 7.9 km.

UPDATE : The earthquake struck very close to the river Po, one of the main rivers in Italy.

UPDATE : The earthquake was very well felt in the Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna Region, and more precisely in the following provinces: Mantua (Mantova), Rovigo, Verona, Padua (Padova) and Ferrara
