Strong aftershock rattles the Christchurch area, New Zealand

UPDATE 23:40 UTC : Somebody living in Rolleston said that it was the most violent tremor she had felt since February 22.

UPDATE 23:37 UTC : The aftershock was felt as far away as Oamaru, Timaru and Cheviot.

UPDATE 19:18 UTC : After scanning our many sources in the greater Christchurch area, NO damage has been reported so far.

UPDATE 19:15 UTC : The quake was followed by a 3.4-magnitude tremor, which struck just after 6 am.

UPDATE 17:41 UTC : intensity values as reported by GNS Science :
MM6 Slightly damaging
(Slightly damaging is a MM6 description in New Zealand, but damage is not always present - we know it is confusing ...)

UPDATE 17:32 UTC : Geonet GNS-Science, the New Zealand specialized Service, reports a magnitude of 5.3 at a depth 15 km. the epicenter is however located aét 20 km from Christchurch.  As we said many times before we trust these data most as the measuring instruments close to the epicenter  belong to GNS Science.

UPDATE 17:23 UTC : EMSC reports a magnitude of 5.0 at a depth of 18 km.

Moderate but shallow and accordingly dangerous aftershock near the city center of Christchurch (USGS epicenter data).  The aftershock occurred at 3 AM in the night.
We would normally not color this aftershock orange (moderately dangerous), but due to the already serious damaged area, some buildings may be still unstable and aftershocks like this one can be even more damaging.
