UPDATE 28/04 - 15:20 UTC : The Japanese government has warned the people living in coastal areas to be at Alert for high tides and typhoons, as the land below sea level has been five-folded since the earthquake from March 11.

UPDATE 28/04 - 14:54 UTC : Good news out of the Fukushima Nuclear plant. The radioactivity of the seawater at the nuclear plant has been decreased by 50% compared to April 27.  The decline is the first one in 3 days. It is unsure whether the decrease had a relation with the bad weather in the area.

UPDATE 28/04 - 13:51 UTC : Warner Entertainment Studios in Ishinomaki Japan is offering 500 free tickets daily from April 28 to May 3  to the various shelters in the area.

UPDATE 28/04 - 13:44 UTC : New update on the missing and killed people statistics, now diving under 26,000 :

UPDATE 26/04 - 17:24 UTC : The next 10 years Sumo wrestlers have promised to support children by donating 10,000 yen each month to a children relief fund. The fund will help children to overcome the expenses due to the tsunami and earthquake.

UPDATE 26/04 - 10:10 UTC : Good news again today as the missing count continues to decrease.
The dead and missing combined count is almost below 26,000. It is expected to reduce further once the new Miyagi figures are added in.
A new CATDAT Situation Report will be formulated in the coming days with the expected outcome, but a preliminary figure is looking at around 22000-23000 as the final total. Lower than otherwise expected. Around 5,500 people have been injured. The number of destroyed houses is over 76,000 and the number of damaged buildings is well over 250,000. Between 120,000 and 167,000 still remain in shelters across Japan, depending on if the 47,000 additional in secondary evacuations are included in Fukushima (the discrepancy between NPA and FDMA).

UPDATE 25/04 - 08:57 UTC : Tsunami missing count dives below 12,000.  Instead of ending at a +30,000 fatalities number - we have good hope that the final picture will be less than 25,000.

UPDATE 25/04 - 08:55 UTC : The JR Shinkansen high speed bullet train service from Tokyo to Sendai has been reopened today.

UPDATE 24/04 - 22:19 UTC : Japan hopes that China and South Korea will ease their import restrictions for Japanese agricultural products.  The import ban and restrictions have been imposed after the Fukushima nuclear accident.

UPDATE 24/04 - 18:26 UTC : Approx. 5,000 people have demonstrated against nuclear power in general and Tepco more specific. The protesters marched through the streets of central Tokyo.

UPDATE 24/04 - 09:33 UTC : More than 5 weeks after the March 11 earthquake, another massive round of Search will take off. The search mission is a combined USA/Japan (Self Defense Forces) effort to find as much as possible missing persons (bodies). There are still more than 12,000 people missing. The present operation will last 2 days.

UPDATE 24/04 - 09:27 UTC : On top of the cruel earthquake misery and despite all the praying to the different Gods and Goddesses, nature is not listening. Now heavy rainfall makes unstable hills even more dangerous for landslides. A flooding alert is not far away for the Tohoku region. The bad weather will at least last until Monday. Combined with powerful aftershocks, this kind of weather can become a deadly cocktail.

UPDATE 23/04 - 10:33 UTC :
M 6.0      2011/04/23 10:12     Depth 38.9 km     NEAR THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN
07:12:48 PM at epicenter
UPDATE : JMA data : Intensity 3 (on a scale of 0 to 7) and magnitude : 6.0
Very strong aftershock at an intermediate depth and at a safe distance from the Kamaishi coast
The intensity of the earthquake (the main issue for the impact on people) is only 3
163 km (101 miles) ESE (112°) from Morioka, Honshu, Japan
Satellite map of the greater epicenter area

UPDATE 23/04 - 00:28 UTC : Prime Minister Kan has emphasized that nearly 30,000 temporary houses will be ready for evacuees by the end of May.

The relief supplies include 7,125 blankets from Sweden, 130 water containers and others from Finland, 112 camp beds from Slovakia and 168 beds from Bulgaria. They will be delivered to the areas in need in Ibaraki Prefecture.

UPDATE 23/04 - 00:19 UTC : Greenpeace today called on the Japanese government to drop plans to raise the official limits of radiation exposure for children in Fukushima Prefecture, 20 milliSievert per year (1) – the same level as nuclear power plant workers, and twenty times the internationally recognised annual allowable dose for adults.

UPDATE 22/04 - 23:54 UTC : A real, almost not mentioned disaster, is the state of the thousands of animals abandoned in the NO GO area around the nuclear plant. Cattle is in best shape as they are grazing on the (radioactive) meadows.
Other animals staying normally in barns are in a terrible shape. 60% of the 3,000 milk cows are said to have died. Almost all of the 600,000 chickens have died because the feeding discontinued.
Approx. 300 farms were active in the 20 km zone around the power plant.
For animal lovers, this is a horror scenario !
Read more details here

UPDATE 22/04 - 23:54 UTC : A NO GO zone ofhas been established in a radius of 20 km around the Fukushima nuclear plant.

UPDATE 22/04 - 23:49 UTC : Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have visited Ibaraki Prefecture and more precisely Kitaibaraki City on Friday, where 5 people died. They have visted the port, which was severely damaged by the tsunami. The fishing port was devastated by the continuing waves.

UPDATE 22/04 - 23:44 UTC : The problems at the Fukushima nuclear plant are far from over. This morning (JST) the government reported that reactor 1 may not withstand continuous heavy aftershocks as the cooling is far from perfect. TEPCO is making new plans to improve cooling of reactors 1 and 3.  In reactor 1 6 tons of water is being injected every hour!

UPDATE 22/04 - 23:09 UTC : Part 14 of our ongoing Japan earthquake and tsunami report will hopefully put more emphasis on aid and reconstruction instead of reporting on powerful aftershocks

UPDATE 22/04 - 10:45 UTC : A M 5.6 aftershock near Iwaki triggered a Felt intensity of 5 lower at Fukushima-ken Hamadori. The aftershock occurred at 00:28 Japan Time

UPDATE 22/04 - 10:45 UTC : Toyota has said that their Japan output will start normalizing in July, overseas in August. It expects that it will have a full recovery in November or December globally. However, the amount of loss is substantial - a lost output of 400,000 units in Japan and 100,000 overseas as of April 30th. It is encouraging suppliers to consider diversifying output overseas. A back of the hand calculation of 500000 lost units. If the Toyota car maker makes $2000 on each car profit, then this is $1 billion loss. Of course more detailed analysis will show in the coming months.

UPDATE 22/04 - 10:37 UTC : Japan has budgeted around $49 billion US for reconstruction. Remembering that the material loss could be between $180-300 billion US with additional losses for indirect effects. The Disaster Relief Fund will pay for removal of rubble and debris, temporary housing, rebuilding of roads, farms, airports and schools and loans to small- and medium-sized businesses.
To rebuild long-term housing, another fund will need to be set up and other money will need to be spent.

Radioactive water found in and outside reactor buildings is delaying work to restore cooling functions of the
Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Seawater near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has reached a
much higher level of radiation than previously reported. New readings from a sample of sea water found
radioactive iodine at 3,355 times the legal limit. Japan’s Nuclear Safety Agency says this does not pose a
health risk. The Government says it is expected to take a considerable amount of time before the
temperatures of fuel rods in the reactor cores at the power station are lowered to a stable state.
