Very strong but harmless earthquake in the Kermadec Islands region

GDACS Tsunami simulation for Kermadec Islands earthquake April 18 2011

UPDATE 15:04 UTC : The initial values of this earthquake have been seriously changed after recalculation. USGS is reporting now a magnitude of 6.6 at a depth of 90.4 km (from an initial 6.4 @ 8.4 km).
At earthquake-report we had problems to believe that a shallow earthquake of 6.4 would have been felt all over the North Island at a distance of several hundred km. The new depth makes this much more understandable.

UPDATE 14:27 UTC : A lot North Island people have felt the earthquake as a weak to light shaking.
The quake was very shallow and the epicenter was centered at a distance of 440 km from Te Araroa on the New Zealand North Island.

UPDATE 14:04 UTC : Some tectonics : The epicenter of this earthquake lies along the Kermadec Trench, one of Earth's deepest oceanic trenches, reaching a depth of 10047 m.
Formed by the subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Indo-Australian Plate, it runs over a thousand kilometres parallel with and to the east of the Kermadec Ridge and island arc, from near the northeastern tip of New Zealand's North Island to the trench's junction with the Louisville seamount chain northeast of Monowai Seamount. (source Wikipedia)

UPDATE 13:59 UTC : An additional word of l'Esperance Rock, the closest island to the epicenter :
L'Esperance Rock, formerly French Rock, is the southernmost islet in the Kermadec Islands, to the north of New Zealand. It is 80 km south of Curtis Island and 600 km northeast of East Cape on New Zealand's North Island at. The smaller L'Havre Rock lies 8 km to the north-west of L'Esperance; it is a reef that barely reaches the surface. L'Esperance Rock is 250 m in diameter with an area of 4.8 ha. It rises to a height of 70 m. It is the site of a substantial breeding colony of Grey Noddies. Masked Boobies have also been recorded breeding there.

UPDATE 13:58 UTC : The area has a lot of daily earthquakes and every couple of days a moderate one (above 4.5). There is hardly a week that the Karmadec Islands do not show up in our webs statistics.

UPDATE 13:39 UTC : GDACS has issued a GREEN tsunami as well as a GREEN earthquake report.

Very strong earthquake in the Kermadec Islands region.
We have NO signs of a tsunami alarm (normally higher magnitudes are necessary to generate a tsunami)
The Kermadec Islands archipelago are a number of tiny UNPOPULATED islands (only a handful of New Zealand scientists on these islands)
The Kermadec Islands area is an area a frequently hit by earthquakes.

The epicenter is approx. 340 km from the Brothers Volcano, a Pacific Ocean submarine volcano.
l'Esperance Rock is the southernmost islet in the Kermadec Islands, to the north of New Zealand. It is 80 km south of Curtis Island and 600 km northeast of East Cape on New Zealand's North Island
