M 5.8      2011/04/06 14:01     Depth 18.9 km      NIAS REGION, INDONESIA
09:01:43 PM at epicenter
UPDATE 22:21 UTC : BMKG has reported a Richter magnitude of 5.9 at a depth of 15 km, in line with USGS.
UPDATE 14:58 UTC : Overall Earthquake-Report conclusion : Based on the facts that the shallow epicenter is approx.  30 km from populated areas + that the type of earthquake is a subduction earthquake + the very weak response of people looking for information : none to very light damage may be expected.
UPDATE 14:56 UTC : An additional reason to conclude that the people on Sumatra have not felt it as something special is the fact that Indonesian surfers are not visiting the site above average. When a serious shaking is experienced, our visiting numbers are climbing steeply.
UPDATE 14:53 UTC : As there is often a big difference in between statistical data and the felt experience from the people, we can already conclude that this earthquake had NO real impact on Sumatra itself. The local press is not even mentioning this earthquake so far!
UPDATE 14:48 UTC : The strong shaking will have been experienced on the north-western coastal areas of Nias Island
UPDATE 14:40 UTC : NO readings yet from BMKG (Indonesia) - Quake happened 37 minutes ago.
UPDATE 14:38 UTC : EMSC, the European seismological institute has reported a magnitude of 6.0 at a depth of 30 km.
UPDATE 14:35 UTC : 273,000 people will have felt a moderate V MMI shaking
UPDATE 14:33 UTC : USGS reports that 24,000 people will have experienced a VI MMI shaking = strong shaking
UPDATE 14:32 UTC : Approx. 40 km from the epicenter of the March 28, 2005 8.7 magnitude earthquake killing 1,346 people.
Strong to very strong shallow seaquake approx. 30 km from Nias Island and Banyak and Tuangku island.
184 km (114 miles) W (269°) from Sibolga, Sumatra, Indonesia
