Very strong M 6.2 earthquake at a safe distance out of the Crete (Greece) coast

Earthquake Greece, Crete on April 1 2011 - Felt reports

UPDATE 23:55 UTC : Some EMSC Felt reports :
Sitia (60 km SW from epicenter) :
Abrupt initial jerking, followed by strong shaking for about 10 seconds

Sitia (60 km SW from epicenter) :
At first I thought my father was shaking my chair but he woke actually up because he felt the shaking. My mother was in the kitchen and got out of the house. I was reading and my PC screen was shaking and the lamps on the ceiling at least for 1-2 minutes after the shaking.

Mália (109 km W from epicenter) :
At the exact time of the earthquake, there was the loudest thunder roar and stopped at the exact time the shaking stopped.

Iraklion (137 km W from epicenter) :
A brick fell off a roof and damaged a car in the next area to the Town Center.

Gazi  (144 km W from epicenter) :
Felt like first trembling, about 2-3 seconds, then swaying 10-15 seconds. Nearby dogs were barking seconds after, not sure were they barking because of something else.

UPDATE 17:13 UTC : Once again and SOS Earthquakes Non-Profit foundation, the parent foundation of Earthquake-Report are hammering on the absolute NEED to inform tourists on all the mediterrenean countries (including Greece) on the danger of earthquakes and tsunamis. Tourists are definitely NOT earthquake prepared at this moment. We make a plea to hang earthquake preparedness instructions on the hotels doors next to the fire instructions (also in other earthquake sensitive countries in the world).

UPDATE 15:49 UTC : EMSC has decreased his magnitude (Mw) calculation to 6.0 (from 6.2)

UPDATE 15:22 UTC : So far we see that the earthquake has been felt very good in the following countries : Greece (of course), Cyprus, Egypt, Libya (although they might have thought that is was the impact of a bomb instead of an earthquake), Turkey. We have no reports from other countries, but are almost sure that Lebanon, Israel and Syria must have felt it also.

UPDATE 15:01 UTC : As predicted minutes after the earthquake happened, people have felt the shaking in many Mediterranean countries.

UPDATE 14:51 UTC : is having serious questions on how Greek people, especially at Crete, would be informed in case of tsunami reaching the islands within 10 to 15 minutes.
We do invite our Greek readers to comment on this.
As this is a very strong earthquake felt in an area of several hundreds of km, we fear that communicating the news to send people to higher grounds might be a problem.

UPDATE 14:48 UTC : The Greek press is almost completely absent in this earthquake.

UPDATE 14:38 UTC :
4,000 people are expected to experience a V shaking (moderate shaking)
369,000people are expected to experience a IV shaking (light shaking)

UPDATE 14:20 UTC : GDACS published a GREEN earthquake alert for this earthquake = very limited chance on damage and/or injuries

UPDATE 14:18 UTC : The earthquake will be felt in a very big area along the Mediterranean coast as a weak earthquake. The felt experience will go far beyond Greece itself.

UPDATE 14:02 UTC : No agency reports a location close to the islands (good news).

UPDATE 14:00 UTC : GFZ reports a magnitude of M6.2 and depth 66km.

UPDATE 13:59 UTC : EMSC reports a magnitude of 6.2 at a depth of 60 km.

UPDATE 13:57 UTC : Wapmerr theoretical model comes to the same conclusion than Earthquake-Report.

A very strong earthquake occurred during the afternoon (local time) out of the Crete coast.
The closest populated location is at least at a 50 km distance.
Early reports did mention a shallow and also more dangerous depth of 10 km. After recalculation the depth was set at 60 to 80 km, making this earthquake a lot less dangerous.
