Very dangerous and strong earthquake close to Kandrian, New Britain, Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea earthquake March 10 2011 - shaking intensity

FINAL UPDATE 15:33 UTC : This is a final update on this very strong earthquake. Based on reports from people normally well informed on New Britain, we are happy to report that there are no signs of important damage or injuries. We will reopen this article immediately when we would receive conflicting reports.

UPDATE 08:17 UTC : Kandrian is the second town on New Britain Island and has "only" 1,014 inhabitants.  The worst shaken area in this earthquake has however 37,000 people living in scattered villages on the coastal plains and on the hills.  Most of these villages consist of wooden or bamboo houses which if collapsed will not get the press. Kandrian has also a number of stone houses which are vulnerable to earthquakes. As Papua New Guinea is an impoverished nation, earthquake-prepared buildings are scarce to non-existent.

UPDATE 08:08 UTC : As usual in Papua New Guinea, NO word on this earthquake in the local press.  The international press is reporting that the area is scarcely populated and that serious damage will not be generated (read : it will not be important).
Shortly we will write an in-depth article about this "selective behavior" of the media.

UPDATE 10/03 - 00:23 UTC : We will have to wait another 6 to 8 hours before we will have reliable news out of the epicenter area.  If you are interested in the wellbeing of the greater Kandrian people, please come back to this page.

UPDATE 10/03 - 00:23 UTC : USGS has revised his Magnitude to 6.5.  The epicenter remains at the same location.

UPDATE 23:32 UTC :
GDACS list of potentially affected people
2 people are living within 1 km from the epicenter
32 people are living within 2 km from the epicenter
531 people are living within 5 km from the epicenter
1,611 people are living within 10 km from the epicenter
9,188  people are living within 20 km from the epicenter
23,663 people are living within 50 km around the epicenter

UPDATE 23:09 UTC : USGS has revised the earthquake data and has now a depth of 43 km with the same magnitude of 6.6.

UPDATE 22:47 UTC : Based on Earthquake-Report experience in earlier earthquakes, it can take a long time before rescue services reach and communicate on eventual damage or injuries.  Papua New Guinea is a very poor country and has almost NO equipment to help rescue services in their after-earthquake inspections.
Sometimes it can take days walking to reach locations inland.

UPDATE 22:38 UTC : Kandrian has an airport

UPDATE 22:29 UTC : The following villages are located a few km from the epicenter : Lakungkung, Maum, Simimia, Gisamilo, Maklongmerang, Senemsi and Aka

UPDATE 22:24 UTC : NOAA has also confirmed that NO widespread tsunami must be expected along the Pacific coasts.

UPDATE 22:17 UTC : GDACS has publishes a GREEN earthquake report and a GREEN Tsunami report (although the epicenter location was under the island).

UPDATE 22:15 UTC : The following recent earthquakes had casualties :
1983 : Magnitude 6.2 -- 10 victims (MMI VII)
2005 : Magnitude 6.1 -- 1 victim (MMI VII)

UPDATE 22:07 UTC : The direct epicenter area has a lot of primitive small villages.

UPDATE 22:02 UTC : In a call from Earthquake-Report to Kimbe, Walindi Plantation Resort, we are happy to report that Kimbe had a moderate shaking but the situation is completely normal.

UPDATE 21:58 UTC :

Following the theoretical models of USGS 37,000 people will experience a strong VI MMI shaking.

UPDATE 21:56 UTC : New Britain is regularly struck by major earthquakes

UPDATE 21:55 UTC : Kandrian is one of the 2 biggest cities in New Britain Island and has approx.  1,106 inhabitants. Kimbe, the capital of New Britain is located at 76 km from the epicenter and has 16,000 inhabitants.

UPDATE 21:52 UTC : The local time at Kandrian when the earthquake struck was 07:24 AM

UPDATE 21:50 UTC : The location of the epicenter will be critical for the damaging effect of this earthquake. Due to the uncertainty of the seismological data it will take a little before recalculations can be more certain of the exact epicenter point and depth of the hypocenter.

A very strong and dangerous earthquake occurred close to Kandrian in Papua New Guinea.
The earthquake is quite shallow at a depth of 33 km. If the epicenter location will be confirmed, we fear that the city of Kandrian is at risk for this very strong earthquake.
Other news in buildup.

Salve a tutti. Cordiali Saluti.

The earthquake activity worldwide is very normal. Of course next to USGS and EMSC there is almost no other source reporting on earthquakes. Earthquake-Report fills in the gap where others are only interested in a limited number of earthquakes.
Continue reading earthquake-report, we write and work to inform the world about evry important earthquake whether it would be in Bora-Bora, Croatia, China or Mongolia. Thanks for writing your comment.
