UPDATE 15:53 UTC : After screening our many Philippine sources, we are happy to report that this earthquake made NO structural damage, injuries or casualties.

UPDATE 08:56 UTC : Engineering district of Surigao del Sur is conducting clearing operations to remove debris along the Benoni area highway.

UPDATE 08:41 UTC : Some landslides and falling rocks have been reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Rockfall on the National Highway near Carrascal, however, roads are still passable.

UPDATE 08:35 UTC : Earlier reports of damaged houses are still unconfirmed so far.

UPDATE 08:33 UTC : Local Mindanao news media are reporting that people from the coastal areas near the epicenter are returning home after seeking higher grounds for a possible Tsunami risk and staying there for many hours .

UPDATE 07:27 UTC : Jaime Uriarte Comparativo reports from Cantilan to Earthquake-Report (near the epicenter area) :

I was at the house with my family when the shaking was going on. we ran away to the nearby open space, then suddenly power were cut-off, we keep on praying...then when the shaking halted.
I went to the municipal hall to join with the other members of the Cantilan Municipal Disaster Coordinating Council for the monitoring.
Landslides in the mountains (boundaries between Carrascal and Cantilan), furnitures were in disarray, bell rung, some man-made light structures collapsed but no concrete buildings wrecked.

UPDATE 04:53 UTC : Local highways are being checked for damage, however we have not been able to confirm the quake damage to houses as yet. Bombo Radyo has reported in tagalog that the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has been sent to assess the damage caused by the earthquake, but also has not confirmed any damaged houses. No casualties have been reported.

UPDATE 04/03-00:27 UTC : As predicted by Phivolcs and feared by Earthquake-Report, this shallow earthquake caused a total power blackout in the cities of  Carrascal and Cantilan  in the Surigao del Sur province. Power was restored 2,5 hours later.
The quake damaged some houses.
People to run away from the coast as a precaution of a possible Tsunami.
Cantilan disaster management officials alerted local residents "to be on alert if a call for evacuation is needed."

UPDATE 18:10 UTC : At 10.27 PM(local time), another weak quake of Magnitude 3.3 struck the Carrascal area.

UPDATE 17:55 UTC : Surigao del sur is one of the supplier of agricultural items like, rice, banana and some tropical fruits. Copper, chromite and silver are also found here (source : Wikipedia)

UPDATE 17:45 UTC : Phivolcs MMI scale has a range from 0 to 10. The MMI scale used in USA and middle- and South America has a range of 0 to 12, which means that a VI in the Philippines means a VII in the western used MMI scale.  Very Strong shaking (see below) is the logical explanation for this value.

UPDATE 17:12 UTC : No news so far in the National and Regional Filipino press. Most newspapers have only very limited news during the nightly hours.

UPDATE 16:48 UTC : Close-by villages are : Socorro (Bucas Grande), Claver (Mindanao) and Carrascal (Mindanao)

UPDATE 16:42 UTC : Phivolcs VI scale  =  Very Strong - Many people are frightened; many run outdoors. Some people lose their balance. motorists feel like driving in flat tires. Heavy objects or furniture move or may be shifted. Small church bells may ring. Wall plaster may crack. Very old or poorly built houses and man-made structures are slightly damaged though well-built structures are not affected. Limited rockfalls and rolling boulders occur in hilly to mountainous areas and escarpments. Trees are noticeably shaken.

UPDATE 16:39 UTC : Phivolcs writes :
Expecting Damage : YES
Expecting Aftershocks : YES

UPDATE 15:49 UTC : Earthquake-Report maintains his ORANGE color (moderately dangerous due to the close-by city of Socorro. Socorro is a 5th class municipality in the province of Surigao del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 17,932 people in 3,071 households. (source Wikipedia)

61 km (38 miles) ESE (115°) from Surigao, Mindanao, Philippines

UPDATE 15:41 UTC : What initially looked very dangerous (strong and shallow) tends to be (Luckily) a harmless earthquake at a safe distance out of the coast.
