UPDATE 18:54 UTC : EMSC testimony out of Urasoe, 87 km from the epicenter :
Earthquake lasted about 25 - 30 secs .... I was laying in my bed, next to both my daughter and wife who were both asleep.  My arm was touching the wall.  The bed seemed to shake abruptly, in which I thought my wife was moving on her side of the bed.  However, when I looked at her, she was not moving at all. At this point I noticed the light overhead swaying.  The strength would have been considered, minimal, and only noticeable to stationary people.  With my arm touching the wall, I did not feel the apartment moving (we are on the 3rd floor) and only the bed seemed to shake.

  1. I had a very similar experience. I was laying in bed and thought my husband was kicking or moving in his sleep. Until I saw other things moving. It felt like someone was literally shaking my bed at the head board. I am on the 9th floor in Okinawa Japan. I also experienced the earthquake that happened in San Diego last Easter. It was different than this one because the ground rolled instead of moved back and forth. If it was only a 5.1 and it shook us that much, I can't imagine a stronger one.

    • Armand Vervaeck says:

      Misty,
Amazing how many people felt this moderate earthquake at a relative big distance from Okinawa.
What you have experienced is the reason that we at Earthquake-Report are never sure about the impact of a certain Magnitude.
In some places a shock like today in Okinawa can make a lot of damage (ie China and Turkey), in other places like Chile people do not even react to it anymore.
So, you are the proof that every earthquake can be totally different.
Thanks for your remark and sharing your experience.
