Indonesian Government gives daily aid allowance to Mentawai Tsunami families

Mentawai tsunami -

The government says it will pay Mentawai Islands tsunami victims a living allowance in January.

"The cost of living for tsunami victims has been estimated at Rp 6,000 (0.67 US $) per person per day.
The maximum number of people in each family entitled to receive such assistance is five. The government will bear the living cost of tsunami victims for one month," West Sumatra Social Service head Kafrawi said on Thursday as quoted by Antara news agency.

The government would pay the allowance in early January, he said, adding local authorities were still registering eligible recipients. It was not clear for how long the government would pay the allowance.

"We ask the Mentawai district administration to send a list of recipients to the West Sumatra Governor as soon as possible so that we can quickly pass it to the Social Services Ministry," Kafrawi said.

Governor Irwan Prayitno and Indonesian Red Cross chairman Jusuf Kalla recently met with the ministry, which agreed to pay the allowance, according to Kafrawi.

"We hope the plan can be realized on schedule to alleviate the economic burdens of the island's tsunami victims."

More than 400 people were killed and 300 reported missing after an earthquake-driven tsunami struck the Mentawai Islands in October. Authorities estimated that up to 65,000 people have been affected by the disaster.
