Dominica “ M 4.5 “ Light earthquake in the coastal waters of Caribbean Dominica

Atlantic plate diving under the Caribbean plate

Atlantic plate diving under the Caribbean plate

Earthquake Report comment :
With an epicenter of only 30 km from Roseau, Dominica, a light and very deep earthquake happened 7 hours ago.
Only few people will have felt a very light tremor because of the depth of the hypocenter.
If you look into the details of the Google map, you will see clearly the  Atlantic plate diving underneath the Caribbean plate, which create the  relatively seismically active area.

Dominica has seven volcanic centres, the highest concentration of "live" volcanoes in the world.
The Caribbean 'plate' is overriding the Atlantic 'plate', which is being 'subducted' down and providing materials which become part of the magma which fuels the Lesser Antillean volcanoes.
The edge of the Caribbean 'plate' is perhaps 50 miles east of Dominica, and the crumbling edges of both plates are responsible for the seismic activity so common off east Dominica and in Southern Dominica. (courtesy :
