The February 22 2011 earthquake was in fact an aftershock of the M 7. 1 September 2010 earthquake.
Due to the shallow depth and the nearby metropolitan city of Christchurch, this earthquake became a tragedy for a lot of people. Lives have been lost, people have been injured and properties have collapsed and been heavily damaged.
Search and rescue went on for a long time.
