Update 11:07am - A second death of a child has been registered although this has not been confirmed by a 2nd source.

Update 10:22am - The death was of a 13 month old child.

Update 9:11am - Much damage has occurred with over 70 villages damaged to within 30% and 90%. This goes along with the death and injuries.

Update 8:02am - Numerous power and water outages have also occurred.

Update 7:58am - The first fatality has been confirmed.

Update 7:50am - Information is slow to hand. Beyond the 20 injuries, 400 collapsed houses, and many damaged houses, not much else is known.

Update 6:59am - Also the town Minab was affected by the quake. At least 5 buildings there suffered minor damage.

Update 6:47am - New reports from Iran mentioning that at least 18 people were injured and only 2 of them were transferred to hospital. In earlier reports, there are more hospitalized people mentioned.

Update 6:31am - No new numbers of injuries or collapsed houses are known yet. The Red Crescent in now transferring tents, food and drinking water to the epicenter area.

UPDATE 5:10am – It is also rumored that one person was killed in the Hormozgan University. However, authorities have not confirmed the news.

UPDATE 4:50am – 9 aftershocks have occurred above M4. Injury toll up to 17 confirmed.

UPDATE 4:45am – USGS Shakemap is predicting now VIII shaking, which is exactly what we have seen!

UPDATE 4:45am – 11 villages have been damaged.

UPDATE 4:43am – The USGS has updated their hypocenter to the same as the Iran Seismological Center, reducing the depth to 15km, and a Mw6.0.

UPDATE 4:40am – 3 villages have reportedly been blocked off by landslides..

UPDATE 4:38am – The severity of damage in the 10 villages has increased as they are now being classified as destroyed. Each village generally has between 20 and 50 houses.

UPDATE 4:35am – 8 villages have heavy damage.

UPDATE 4:17am – There are 56 villages within a radius of 15 km arond epicenter. So far, damage and injuries were observed in 2 of 6 examined.

UPDATE 4:13am – Aftershocks are shaking the region at regular intervals with at least 3 strong M5 aftershocks felt so far.

UPDATE 4:11am – At least 10 villages have damage and destruction, and the injury toll of 11 is expected to rise. This area is very historical and old, and there are reports than many “historical villages” have been destroyed.

UPDATE 4:10am – Cracked houses have been reported in the city of Jask.

UPDATE 4:05am – 11 people have been injured. The rescue teams number has remained at 10 so far with a total of 50 people.

UPDATE 4:00am – 5 people have been injured at least, and many houses damaged.

UPDATE 3:35am – Many houses have collapsed according to eyewitness reports.

UPDATE 3:32am – A damaging M5.3 aftershock has occurred.

UPDATE 3:30am – Still no word on the number of casualties however 10 teams consisting of 50 search and rescue officers have been sent to the region with helicopters.

UPDATE 3:10am – There are unfortunately reports of casualties. Disaster response teams have been sent to the location around the epicenter. There will have been crews on site given the damaging M5 earthquake yesterday which destroyed 6 villages 30%-70%, i.e. with most buildings with significant damage. The shaking today will have been around 5-6 times that of yesterday.

UPDATE 3:00am – There are not many large settlements in the area, thus we hope that damage will be kept to a minimum. The houses in the area are however very vulnerable to earthquakes.

UPDATE 2:52am – Fatalities are expected via theoretical models.

UPDATE 2:52am – The earthquake has been given an Ml6.2 and 15km depth by the Iran Seismological Center. This struck Hormozgan in the area of Minab, where many houses were damaged in the past few days by a M5 earthquake. We hope that many people will have been out of their homes.

The initial depth calculation of USGS was 36km, however it could still be a shallower hypocenter once more information is gained. This is potentially very dangerous. The earthquake was felt in the United Arab Emirates.

Update May 2 – 07:59 UTC : At least 2 houses have collapsed after that a number of aftershocks did strike the Bhaderwah area.
- Schools remain closed today by order of the local government
- people spent the night in the open due to the fear of aftershocks
-  Bhaderwah Valley has witnessed 15 tremors during the past 3 days (11 yesterday alone)
- Apart from the 2 killed people, nearly 100 people (among them 32 students) were injured and scores of buildings damaged in Doda and Kishtwar districts yesterday.

Update 16:45 UTC : USGS has after all published some additional details of this earthquake (probably because is became a deadly and damaging one).  This was the MMI shaking in the different cities and villages nearby :
MMI V (moderate shaking) : Bhadarwah    13,000 people
MMI IV (light shaking) : Kishtwar 21,000, Doda 18,000, Ramban 7,000, Batoti 4,000 and Ramnagar 8,000
MI III (weak shaking) : Amritsar 1,092,000,  Lahore 6,311,000, Srinagar 976,000, Gujranwala 1,384,000 and Kotli 640,000

Update 16:18 UTC :  Minister for Rural Development Ali Mohammad Sagar has said that the government will extend all the support to the earthquake victims of the Doda and Kishtwar districts. The Minister has further said that the necessary instructions have been conveyed to the concerned District Administration to assess the loss caused to various structures, so that necessary relief can be provided to them at an earliest. Sagar has also sympathized with the affected people who have been injured as a result of the earthquake and assured them that all possible help would be extended to them.

The Indian Air Force came to the rescue of a 6-year old girl who was blocked inside debris of a collapsed building at Kishtwar. The condition of the girl was deteriorating continuously (brain concussion). To IAF has airlifted the girl to a GMC Hospital in Jammu.

Update 14:40 UTC : A second killed person in Kuntawara area. The number of injured people rises to at least 69. 32 of them are students. Many hundred buildings, among them schools and hospitals, were damaged or destroyed in different parts of the region. Detailed numbers are not available yet.

Update 11:22 UTC : Meanwhile PCR Kishtwar told Kashmir Life that one girl, about 2 and half years old was seriously injured when a stone hit on her head near a stone quarry. “She was shifted to Kishtwar district hospital but she went into coma and now she is being shifted to Jammu hospital.”

Update 10:40 UTC : We unfortunately have to report that based on local well informed sources in K&J (Kashmir and Jammu) 1 person has been killed by the earthquake in Kishtwar.
An elderly villager, identified as Gusavun Ram, was killed when a bolder hit him while he was rushing out of his home. In another incident two school kids and one of their teachers were seriously injured in Putinag village of district Kistwar.

Update 10:27 UTC : A Facebook message from APINews reports that people from Bhaderwah town say that smoke (probably dust) is coming out of the mountain at the backside of Rainda village, a huge portion of the hill has blown up (ER : Typical for a landslide).

Update 10:12 UTC : Jammu and Kashmir experienced at least 6 aftershocks. 25 students and 2 teachers were at least injured, but this number will increase soon. While the roof of a school building collapsed in Baderwah injuring eight girl student, four students were injured when the building of their school collapsed in Kishtwar district. The children were being served mid-day meals when tremors hit the area.
- Most buildings in Chenab valley in J&K developed cracks.

Update 09:48 UTC : An avalanche alert has been issued for people living in the Bhaderwah-Chamba border belt after tremors shook the valley in Doda district on Wednesday. ZEE news is telling his readers  “We have alerted people living in the foothills of the Ashapati glacier and Chater-gala hills in the Bhaderwah-Chamba border belt after three tremors shook the valley,” police said.  Over 10,000 inhabitants occupy the Thanhala belt in the foothills of the Ashapati glacier and the Chater-gala hills.

Update 09:35 UTC : “We have reports of many buildings having developed big cracks while some mud houses in Chatroo, Thathri, Bhaderwah areas have collapsed,” an official in Jammu said.
-  9 children reported injured, 5 in Gandoh Village and 4 in Bhot Village of Doda District

- The Department of Earth Sciences India is stating in his report that : This earthquake is likely to cause slight to moderate damage to poorly built structures in and around the epicentral area. The earthquake focal mechanism is mainly Reverse Faulting (compression of 2 tectonic plates – South West to North East)

Update 09:13 UTC : 4 children were injured when a school building collapsed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district. The children were being served mid-day meals when tremors hit the area.
In another (twitter) massage : 7 children & 2 teachers reported injured in 3 different schools. Some damage to structures in the region of Doda, Gandoh & Badarwah.

Update 08:57 UTC : So far we have only reports of slight damage, but based on our broad experience, we know that it will take many hours before we will know whether landslides have made additional damage. We assume that Rescue and Relief teams will now visit the whole area to assess the situation. As it is daylight, we think that we will know more in 2 to 4 hours from now.

Update 08:33 UTC : The same area had a HUGE M7.8 (M8.6 following other sources) shallow earthquake on April 4, 1905 (our map shows April 4 1904 and has a slightly different epicenter location. (see also map below). This earthquake killed 19000 people !
The earliest large Indian earthquake for which a well documented instrumental magnitude (8.62) can be assigned. This was a great disaster; the loss of life is stated as 19,000. Instrumental data are not adequate to fix the epicenter. The meizoseismal area, including Kangra, was on the Tertiary rocks of the foothills of the Himalaya. An isolated area of high intensity, lower than that at Kangra but not approached elsewhere, included Dehra Dun, also in the foothills; this was separated from the Kangra meizoseismal area by about 100 miles. The available evidence does not support the idea of two separate earthquakes; it is more likely that there was a great linear extent of faulting.
Another similar report speaks of : Catastrophic earthquake in which a large number of people were killed in the region between Kangra and Dera Dun. The loss of life is stated as 19,000. The shock was felt with an intensity VII at Chamba, Patankot, Lahore, Nagan, Bajaura, Bilaspur and Kasauli. At Tir, Dera Dun and Saharanpur, VIII. The shock was felt in Quetta, with a radius of perceptibility of more than 1,200 km. Probable faulting extending from Kangra to Dera Dun.
ER : Of course the Magnitude of the 1905 earthquake was much much much stronger than today’s earthquake. This information shows however that this is a dangerous area.

Update 08:29 UTC : Telephone lines are jammed and it is very difficult to reach the people in the valley because of massive call traffic. ER : always the same story : people should not use voice lines but use SMS (text) messages instead. The capacity of SMS messages is far greater without voice calls than with voice calls.

Update 08:25 UTC : Reports reaching The Kashmir Life say that the intensity of the earthquake was so huge that people fled out of their homes. “WE were in the court room and it shock like hell and we fled out,” leading lawyer Asim Hashmi told the Kashmir Life. “The court developed cracks and I am told my home also has cracks.”
Details suggest that a number of houses were grounded in certain areas. The details are being collected. The losses are reported from Kishtwar, Bhaderwah and Doda. Not much of the details are right now available about what happened in the villages of the valley. Unconfirmed reports even said that a hospital that was newly built has suffered damage.

Update 08:22 UTC : Preliminary reports said several properties in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh have sustained damage but the same could not be confirmed.

Update 08:09 UTC : According to new initial reports, about six buildings have suffered minor damages including two schools in Bhaderwah.  As can be seen at our 08:06 update, Bladerwah is at only 17 km from the epicenter according to the USGS

Update 07:34 UTC :Buildings shook in Delhi, offices and homes were evacuated in parts of Kashmir, and tremors were reported across the border in Lahore and Islamabad in Pakistan.

Update 07:30 UTC : EMSC has now changed the earthquake parameters from M5.3 at 60 km to M5.7 at 51 km.

Update 07:30 UTC : IMD (Meteorological Department of India) is reporting a very dangerous depth of 15 km. Let’s hope that they are not right and that the hypocenter will be deeper. 4.4 million people are living within a radius of 100 km from the epicenter.
People in affected cities came out of their homes immediately after the tremors were felt.

A preliminary source location suggest the event likely occurred on the Longmenshan fault or a tectonically related fault at a depth of 12km.
The Longmenshan fault was the source fault of the May 12, 2008 Mw7.9 Sichuan earthquake.

The preliminary April 20 event location is approximately 85 km from the hypocentral location of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

The April 20 earthquake reflects tectonic stresses resulting from the convergence of crustal material slowly moving from the high Tibetan Plateau, to the west, against strong crust underlying the Sichuan Basin and southeastern China.

On a continental scale, the seismicity of central and eastern Asia is a result of northward convergence of the India plate against the Eurasia plate with a velocity of about 50 mm/y. The convergence of the two plates is broadly accommodated by the uplift of the Asian highlands and by the motion of crustal material to the east away from the uplifted Tibetan Plateau.

Four events of Mw6.0 or greater have occurred within 200km of the April 19 event in the past 40 years, including the May 2008 Sichuan earthquake and a subsequent aftershock. The northwestern margin of the Sichuan Basin has previously experienced destructive earthquakes.

The magnitude 7.5 earthquake of August 25, 1933, killed more than 9,300 people, while the May 12, 2008 killed 69,197.

Update April 25, 14:01 UTC : According to Pakistani news, the number of fatalities rises to 27.  At least 150 other were injured. Much more than 300 houses collapsed.  Local officials say that mostly people suffered in Laghman, Konar, Nurestan and Nangarhar provinces in eastern Afghanistan.  Hundreds of cattle were killed.

Update 17:40 UTC : Rescue work will be certainly hampered by the nightly hours. We expect that the current number of injured and fatalities will probably increase when the rubble of many collapsed houses is being cleared. Keep this page open as new updates may be expected the following hours. Page refresh happens automatically.

Update 17:29 UTC : USGS has updated his earthquake data. It decreased the Magnitude from Mw5.7 at 65 km to Mw5.6 at 62 km depth. Recalculation of the different parameters has however resulted in a higher shaking expectation for the towns and villages. You can compare them with the table below. The new data are more reflecting what people have told us in their experience reports. The adapted shaking map below shows a greenish area in the Jalalabad valleys which are mainly river sediment.

Update 16:20 UTC : Reports from Xinhua Press mention 3 deaths in Kunar province. This would bring the subtotal to 25, if no double counting has occurred.

Update 15:40 UTC : The 22 people killed in Nangarhar are confirmed from Iranian sources reporting from Afghanistan. 1 killed also in Kunar as previously reported.
Many people are still believed to be under the rubble. 113 people have been injured in Nangarhar Province, and 6 injured in Kunar Province.

Update 15:10 UTC : Main concerns are for Laghman from which we have not heard much at this point. We hope that the 23 killed have included some of the flood victims, from reports, but reports of 15 killed from the earthquake alone are currently common place, with the 23 killed also being reported.

Update 14:40 UTC : As night fall creeps up on Afghanistan, there are hopes that more survivors will be found. In Kunar Province, 500 buildings have been destroyed or damaged. More are expected in Nangarhar.

Update 14:20 UTC : Landslides have been reported. It is unclear as yet, whether additional deaths have occurred due to landslides than the 23 dead due to shaking and structural collapses.

Update 13:57 UTC : The death toll has risen again to 22 dead and 119 injured.

It should be mentioned that these are just in Nangarhar. In addition in Kunar, 1 death and 1 injured was reported. It is expected that the total will rise. In addition, we haven’t gained an insight yet into the possible landslide impacts.

Thus, the total is now 23 dead, 120 injured.

Update 13:30 UTC : The death toll has risen to 13 from the Afghan TV News Network.

Update 13:05 UTC : 8 people have died according to Iranian news sources.

Update 12:53 UTC : We also remind viewers that earthquakes such as this occur regularly and in most cases does not lead to earthquakes of larger magnitude than the earthquake we have just seen. It is important to realise that despite alarmist websites like World Earthquakes that the reality is that there is always a small chance of a large earthquake occurring but it is not possible to predict future earthquakes.

Update 12:50 UTC : 7 dead, 20 severely injured, 49 slightly injured. Much damage to walls and collapsed adobe buildings is being reported.

Update 12:45 UTC : At least 34 injured as well. The 7 deaths also includes 1 child, and was reported from local TV.

Update 12:34 UTC : Reports of 7 deaths are on TV, as well as damage to adobe houses.  (Kindly reported to us by Dr. Syed Ali, Director of the Peshawar University Earthquake Engineering Center.)  In addition, the following was reported:
- “ We felt the earthquake, it was strong. So far no damage is reported. It was felt in large parts of country. Abbottabad and Muzaffarabad also felt the quake”

Earthquake Report wants to emphasise the great work that is done by many Earthquake Engineering Centers including Peshawar in maintaining and installing tri-axial accelerometers and broad band seismometers, as well as conducting detailed studies in such earthquakes. We greatly support funding of this, as through better determination of the hypocenter, faster alerts can be made.

Update 11:28 UTC : According to weather expert Bernhard Mühr, CEDIM, Karlsruhe, Germany, according to weather forecast models: no intense widespread rain expected during next 7 days.
However, over mountain ranges some isolated showers and thunderstorms with local downpours are to be expected. The temperature forecast Jalalabad: Tmax 27°C, Tmin 15°C and similar for the next 4 days.
It is likely that the saturated soils from the past events are still saturated, and earthquake-report.com still calls this earthquake “dangerous”.

Update 11:00 UTC : There has been over 13 people killed in flooding in Afghanistan in the past few days, and from Afghan earthquakes, most fatalities are generally caused by landslides.

Update 10:32 UTC : The earthquake happened in the Afghanistan Province of Laghman (population 416,184) . The nearest places are Kabol, Bagh-e Mirza, and Dehmazang. The maximum altitude nearby is 4858m.

Update 10:29 UTC : The small map below shows the number of people living in a radius near the epicenter. We have to stress however that in case of intermediate or deep earthquakes the radius is less important.

Update 10:27 UTC : This earthquake has even be felt in Abu Dhabi and probably also in the UAE. Abu Dhabi is at a distance of more than 1800 km from the epicenter !

At earthquake-report.com we fear a little bit that the river bed may have increased the shaking. People in New Delhi (India) are reporting that this is by far the strongest shaking they experienced in 6 months.

Update 09:59 UTC : The maximum predicted shaking as calculated by USGS is IV (light shaking). Based on the I Have Felt Reports we are receiving, the shaking was at least perceived as stronger than the theoretical ones.

Update 09:51 UTC : The main reason why this earthquake was felt at such a big distance is the depth of the hypocenter (from 50 to 70 km reported). That way the earthquake waves are radiating over a much bigger distance.

Charikar, Afghanistan - 24APR13, 1400hrs, the building started shaking a little and then became strong until the building and its contents were moving back and forth. Strongest one here in over a year. JALALABAD, AFGHANISTAN - It lasted for appox. 30 sec. and there was strong shaking Islamabad - Desk shaking, 10 seconds or so kabul - 15 seconds, starting slowly then getting stronger with noise Islamabad, Pakistan - tvs standing shaking, beds shaking Islamabad - My bed was shaking for quite some time.. Just a seven minutes back Khyber Pass - My equipment fell from shelves, it lasted from 1-2 minutes at my location. No injuries or casualties. Update 05:13 UTC : Chinese seismologists are stating that the current earthquake is about 85 km from the 2008 cruel earthquake killing 68000 people. Today’s earthquake has also the same Focal Mechanism than the 2008 one.

Update 05:06 UTC : Latest news reported by CCTV China reports that a Kindergarten school should have collapsed. The station staff is now trying to get more news from this.

Update 05:01 UTC : Another video showing the shaking at a greater distance from the epicenter. The location of this video is not know, but based on the time we know that the location of the camera is rather far away.

Update 04:56 UTC : The death toll has further increased to 57 (official)
- The Sichuan, China, Mw6.6 shallow thrust quake close to southern end of aftershock zone of devastating 2008 Mw7.9 quake, similar mechanism
- The Chinese Prime Minister is on his way to the airport to overfly the earthquake area. He want to be kept briefed of all proceedings.

Update 04:52 UTC : The current rescue and relief operation is a LEVEL 1 operation. The command will be at the supreme headquarters in Beijing. Aerial footage we have seen shows a lot of collapsed buildings in the epicenter villages. The images have been photographed out of assessment mission helicopters.

Update 04:30 UTC : CCTV China reports that several buildings have collapsed and that landslides are making relief efforts and traffic to the quake hit zone very difficult.
- Public life (shops, transport etc) has come to a standstill.

Update 04:21 UTC : so far 20 aftershocks from M3.6 to M5.1. The number of fatalities has increased from 41 to 46. We know that some Press Agencies are reporting higher numbers, but we refrain from speculating and we will only mention the official number.

Update 04:05 UTC : Ya’an is the original Panda area in China. The current Panda park is outside Chengdu. there is no real danger for the Panda’s, as they do live in a nice open-air park (have been visiting this park last October).

Update 03:45 UTC : Un-official Xa’an microbloggers are estimating that the death toll will rise a lot the coming hours.

Update 03:38 UTC : The Rescue authorities are now reporting 32 fatalities and at least 600 injured. These are temporary numbers and will further rise.

Update 03:29 UTC : 2000 Rescue and Relief troops from Chengdu have been dispatched to the epicenter area.

Update 03:22 UTC : A very grim picture comes from rescuers already in the earthquake epicenter zone. A lot of buildings have collapsed and the people are anxiously waiting for rescuers to help them. The final outcome will be dramatic and we expect the death toll to rise spectacularly the following hours.

Update 03:09 UTC : The main tectonic plates colliding during this earthquake are the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate. The earthquake today follows a massive M7.8 earthquake earlier this week killing 41 in Pakistan and a M7.2 earthquake this morning in the Kuril Islands area.

Update 02:54 UTC : Chinese earthquake SAR and relief troops are among the best trained in the world. Depending on the level of alert the command is provincially or nationally. This is definitely a National command.
Unless for many other earthquakes i remote places, the rescue and relief should be relatively quick in the epicenter area as the distance from provincial capital Chengdu is only 1 to 2 hours drive. Of course this is in normal conditions. After an earthquakes the roads may be blocked by damage, debris and/or landslides.

Update 02:52 UTC : Officially there are only 2 fatalities so far. We will only bring other numbers when they are confirmed by many Chinese sources. Fatalities are not something to exaggerate !

Update 02:43 UTC : The weather in the earthquake epicenter area is bad (light rain) and people are expecting serious landslides because of the aftershocks.
- We do Thank our Chinese readers to send us so many I Have Felt It reports. Most of them are however from 100+ km from the epicenter which we see as relatively harmless.

Update 02:38 UTC : Map 1 below shows the strongest aftershocks after the M7.0 mainshock. The most recent aftershock measured M4.8. The depth of most aftershocks is varying in between 10 and 20 km.

Update 02:31 UTC : 1200 SAR (Search and Rescue) troops have been dispatched to the epicenter area to search for earthquake victims and to provide relief material.

Update 02:20 UTC : Ya’an, Sichuan earthquake occurred in the same seismic area than the 2008 earthquake. Chinese media people commenting from the Xa’an area are mentioning hundreds of injured an a number of deaths. International reports of +100 fatalities are too soon at this time.

Update 02:06 UTC : Chinese authorities and seismologists are indicating Ya’an as the city closest to the epicenter.
Some more about Ya’an : Previously known as Yazhou-fu, the city is first mentioned during the Zhou Dynasty (1122-255 BCE). It served as a county seat during the Qin and Han Dynasties, but was subsequently taken by nomadic tribes. After being reintegrated into the Chinese Empire in the late 5th century, it was made the seat of the Ya Prefecture in 604. The modern Ya’an county was established in 1912. It became the provincial capital of Xikang province in 1951, but has been a municipality under the administration of Sichuan province since 1955, whenXikang province was merged and became a part of Sichuan province. (source Wikipedia). Ya’an prefecture gas a population of 1,560,000 people !

Update 02:00 UTC : CCTV reports 2 fatalities at this moment. The epicenter is following Chinese media in Xa’an city. We reckon that the final death toll will be more severe.

Update 01:45 UTC : We have no specific information from the epicenter yet. We reiterate that only a small perimeter of max. 50 km radius is at risk for heavy damage.
- A new M5.1 aftershock is now reported. 5+ aftershocks are damaging on its own.

Update 01:45 UTC : Millions of people are currently in the streets out of fear for aftershocks. A hallucinate image this morning when almost naked people are on the streets after having felt the shaking in their beds.

Update 01:42 UTC : China maintains the 7.0 Magnitude but communications are very difficult. This earthquake has been felt by more than hundred million people (Chonqqing alone has 30 million inhabitants).

Update 01:29 UTC : Many aftershocks are currently striking the greater epicenter area. Some of them are damaging from its own.

Update 01:21 UTC : Today’s earthquake is relatively close to the area who was totally devastated whan a M7.8 earthquake struck on 2008. This earthquake killed an estimated 68,000 people.

Update 01:17 UTC : A little bit o good news : USGS has decreased his initial Magnitude from M6.9 to M6.6. The depth has been updated to 12 km, still extremely dangerous.

Update 01:17 UTC : There are 7 million people living within a radius of 100 km from the epicenter. ER Calls a radius of 25 to 35 km at HIGH risk for damage, injuries and fatalities.

Update 01:13 UTC : USGS expects 83,000 people to have experienced a SEVERE MMI VIII shaking, this is damaging shaking. 218,000 will have experienced a MMI VII very strong shaking. The numbers are really BAD!

Update 01:09 UTC : Chinese cities in the greater epicenter area and their probable MMI shaking. VI and V are NOT extremely dangerous but can generate cracks, fallen tiles etc.

Update 00:59 UTC : A lot of tourists will have felt this earthquake as cities like Xi’an, Chengdu, Chonqing etc are heavily visited. Chinese authorities are mentioning Lushan County as the epicenter area.

Update 00:55 UTC : USGS has decreased his expectation of maximum shaking from IX to VIII, still a severe shaking. Adobe houses and non-earthquake resistant houses are at great risk during this earthquake.

Update 00:49 UTC : WAPMERR, the theoretical damage engine has calculated that based on M6.9 and 16 km depth there will be 400 to 3500 fatalities and thousands of injured. Let’s hope that they are wrong !

Update 00:47 UTC : The Chinese data are even more dangerous. CEIC reports a Magnitude of 7.0 at a depth of only 14 km. ER fears for a lot of fatalities.

Update 00:41 UTC : We do stress that this is a MAJOR DANGEROUS earthquake. The combination Magnitude / depth can be very damaging.

Update 00:26 UTC : USGS is expecting a MASSIVE MMI IX shaking near the epicenter. Even if the shaking should be down to VII or VIII, this earthquake will still be very damaging.

Update 00:26 UTC : USGS is reporting a Magnitude of 6.9 at a depth of only 16 km. EMSC is initially reporting a depth of 60 km. If the final depth is less than 20 km, this earthquake will normally be very damaging.

Chongqing - We were on the 17th floor and the we felt quick pulse of light shaking for about 15s ChengDU - in 15th floor is shaking hardly, first horizon then vertical.but then building is fine. Building shook and we had to run into the street. Chengdu Minshan Hotel - Shske waked me up and lasted about 30 seconds Chengdu - Very serious shaking. But much less serious than the one in 2008. Chengdu is a quite safe city. Luzhou - 17th floor in Luzhou Hotel. Sideways movements lasted 30 secs. Lights swinging. No movement felt on ground level. Xi'an - I felt my bed shake for 20+ seconds. My wife and kids did not feel it at all in the living room Luzhou - Luzhou, Sichuan, 30 secs sideways movement of building in 17th floor, no movements on ground level. Chengdu/Huaxiba - Experienced about 14 aftershocks from then. Seems to have calmed down by now (9:45am) Meishan - I was sleeping, I thought it was a nightmare, at the end I got out the bed and went outside, the people were outside already, the first earthquake in my life, scary!! Nanchong - I felt it , but it lasted 2 seconds for me as I woke up very late. My collegues says it lasted for 20 sec. Wenjiang (Chengdu) - J'etait eveille mais dans mon lit. I felt my bed moving and then heard people screaming a little outside Chengdu - on the 10th floor. The first big one at about 8:00 shook pretty strong, swinging cabinet doors open, swaying lights, lasted about 30 seconds. Have felt five or six small ones since then, minor swaying of lights. three hours later, still difficult to call people... Chongqing - I was in bed at the foreign experts building in my apartment on the mountainside when the very heavy swaying from side to side happened. Suining Sichuan - shaking in two wave, second wave was stronger,,,lasted about 30 seconds or less no damage to buildings Chengdu - Woke in my bed on the 5th floor to find a bouncing bed and a shaking building. Most residents fled to the street, clothed or unclothed. Last experience was a 5.4 quake in Adelaide, Australia in 1954. This one was quite frightening for me. The quick response from the government was absolutely amazing. Aftershocks were felt here until 12pm Chongqing - Felt like a heavy pile-driver hammering foundations next door. Hanging towel swinging slightly. I live at a 15th floor in a very densely populated neighbourhood in JFB, with very high buildings (+20stories) of Maoist construction, right behind the new Shangri-La hotel (58+stories) ; My main thought then: not a single one of this huge old concrete buildings would survive a direct hit, it would be an absolute mess in Chongqing. Beibei district, Chongqing - The bed was shaking but i didn't realize it's an earthquake. Many of my classmates rushed out of their rooms, some even naked. Well, May God bless Ya'an and China! Chengdu - Felt the initial shake, some things fell of shelves, my bed was shaking, books shelves, etc. Was feeling aftershocks throughout the day.

Update 08:51 UTC, April 26 :
Monitoring and prevention efforts will be stepped up as secondary geological events overlapping with the flood season present a tremendous challenge for disaster relief operations in Sichuan province’s quake-hit areas, said a senior official of the provincial government on Thursday.  Probe teams have discovered more than 1,900 high-risk spots in Lushan and Baoxing counties, Zhong Mian, executive deputy governor of Sichuan province, said at a news conference in Beijing. The two counties in Ya’an were the areas most affected by the magnitude-7 earthquake on April 20. “Ya’an is a place with abundant rainfall and heavy rain is very common during the flood season. Strong rain in the earthquake zone will easily trigger devastating geological disasters,” Zhong said.
He said the weather has caused landslides along the major route for transporting disaster relief materials, which has made relief work difficult. Read more in this China Daily in-depth article.
ER remark : On request of the Prime Minister and the government, the relief operations are also investing a lot of energy to avoid secondary triggered events like landslides. The attention that this topic gets so short after the earthquake is a great step forward in earthquake response and should be an example for other countries.

Update 15:24 UTC, April 25 :
A 78-year-old man was rescued on Wednesday afternoon in Baoxing county, five days after an earthquake hit the area, according to the municipal government on Thursday.  The man is the first survivor saved after the “golden rescue time,” or the immediate 72 hours after the quake.  He was found on a hill top at Muping Township of Baoxing County by the Beijing-based Lantian rescue team at about 1 pm Wednesday, and was sent to Baoxing People’s Hospital by helicopter. The man suffered a rib fracture but is in stable condition.

Update 08:05 UTC, April 25 :
- Water safety remains a problem rescuers said on Wednesday. The specialized services sampled 15 sites from mountain springs, rivers, wells and water treatment plants in six villages in Longmen township, Lushan county. Analyzed in a laboratory set up in a tent, the water was found to be slightly turbid, organically contaminated and unsuitable for drinking. It can be used for washing clothes and showering. Villagers are informed not to drink water directly from mountain springs, rivers or wells.  Villagers are thaught to use simple water treatment measures. Putting two potable water purification tablets in 15 liters of water and boiling it makes it safe to drink.
- School Classes are expected to fully resume on Saturday in the quake-hit region, according to the provincial educational department. Students prepare for important exams in improvised schoolrooms. Students elsewhere in the quake zone resumed classes on Tuesday. Priority is being placed on those facing college or high school entrance exams.
- China’s State Council urged more efforts to minimize casualties and resettle affected residents. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang presided over the cabinet meeting and led the leaders to pay a silent tribute to quake victims. The rescue cannot be given up although the “golden rescue time,” or the first 72 hours after the quake, is over. Rescuers should continue their all-out efforts in a scientific way, checking every corner to search for survivors, said a statement issued after the meeting.

- The M4.5 @ 19 km depth earthquake early Thursday in Sichuan was not an aftershock but a new earthquake to the south of Chengdu. During that new earthquake we have counted 47 injuries, 24 collapsed houses and 4000 houses damaged

- The fatality and missing statistics have been updated again. Now 196 people killed and 21 still missing. The numbers are only varying slightly. Double counting is almost absent during this earthquake, another major improvement.

Summary 08:25 UTC, April 24 : The Sichuan Ya’an earthquake by numbers:-
- The current death toll is at 193, with the missing reduced to 23. (216 people)
- The injured total is 15,554. Of these, 9467 people were outpatients, and 6087 required some form of operation/medical attention or hospitalisation.
- Many roads have been damaged due to landslides.
- 233,191 people have been relocated.
- 1,992,894 people were affected.
- 4085 aftershocks have occurred, with 4 of them being over Magnitude 5, and 21 of them over M4.
- In rural housing, 72400 rooms have collapsed (around 20,000 houses), and 295600 rooms (around 80,000 houses) have severe damage.
- In urban housing, 67100 rooms have collapsed (around 9,500 buildings), and 71800 rooms have been severely damaged (around 10,000 buildings).
(by comparison, the Sichuan earthquake had around 5,360,000 rooms collapsed and around 21,000,000 rooms damaged.
- This earthquake is around 3-4% of the economic loss extent of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. By comparison, the fatalities are about 0.25% of those from the much larger 2008 event.
- Models of direct loss from this event based on damage are coming out to between 4.1 billion (low, CATDAT) and 6.8 billion USD (high, Ampeng Group).
- The losses reported so far are totalling to around 10 billion CNY or 1.5 billion USD but this is expected to increase.

Earthquake damage estimate

Along with the 193 dead and 25 missing, the economic losses are predicted to be around 4.46 billion CNY in Ya’an alone. According to the Ampang Group – a Chinese group, the total losses could total 42.26 billion CNY (around 6.8 billion USD) if the functions from Sichuan are used. We will have to wait and see if the actual losses meet this figure.

Update 12:33 UTC, April 23 :
- The 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit Lushan, Sichuan Province, on Saturday left 193 dead, 25 missing and 12,211 injured as of 6 a.m. Tuesday, the Ministry of Civil Affairs announced.
- European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Tuesday sent condolences to China over the earthquake.  “On the eve of my visit to Beijing, the news of the earthquake in Sichuan Province has profoundly moved me. I send my condolences to the families of those affected,” said Ashton in a statement.
- Giant panda habitats near the epicenter of the 7.0-magnitude earthquake have suffered only minor effects , the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) said on Tuesday. Aerial remote sensing images showed that the scale of landslides triggered by the quake in the giant pandas’ base located in badly hit Baoxing County, Ya’an City, has not been that large so far, said the CAS.
- Rain began falling Tuesday morning in southwest China’s Lushan County, hampering relief work and posing new threats such as rain-triggered landslides. In the village of Yuxi in Baosheng Township, hundreds of residents have moved from the tents they built to water-resistant ones.
- Medical workers take care of a newborn boy in a tent functioned as temporary hospital in quake-hit Taiping Township of Lushan County. Both mother and baby were fine. The boy’s mother Yang Yan, a 20-year-old woman and father arrived at the hospital in the early morning on Tuesday, after taking a long journey for over three hours from their home in Xingmin Village of the Taiping Township.

Update 22:14 UTC, Monday 22nd April :
- Just at the time that we wrote this update and wanted to mention that the strong aftershocks were almost over, the strongest aftershock in 24 hours struck (early morning local time). The strength was limited to M4.5 at 19 km following the China seismological bureau. Other agencies in the world have reported higher values but we do trust the skills of the Chinese seismologists. Let’s hope that the combination of this aftershock with the rain did not provoke landslides and has not made any more damage or injuries.
- The tea industry, one of the pillars of the local economy in Ya’an city was seriously affected by the disaster, farmers and companies said. Ya’an produced about 66,000 metric tons of tea last year. But as farmers were preparing this year’s new spring tea, the city was hit by the quake. “On top of losses from a drought a few months ago, we expect much less production this year,” said a local official
- Zhang Yichuan is a nurse  in Lushan county. Just likes other medical staff, she was busy with rescuing people injured in the earthquake in SW China, but no one knew her mother just died in the quake.  After learning the bad news and surrounded by tears and sadness, she still decided to return to work. She lost her mother, but didn’t want others to lose theirs. “There are more people who need my help”, she said.

Update 14:09 UTC, Monday 22nd April :
New report from the Chinese government : 192 are being confirmed dead and the number of injured has increased to 12,211 injured.
As the roads to Boaxing county have mostly been cleared from initial rubble, a lot of injured from Boaxing are currently being transported to the neighboring county hospitals.
- Rain is currently pouring out of the sky. This can seriously hamper the last couple of hours of the Golden time (time of 72 hours after the mainshock which enables rescuers to get people alive from below the rubble). Additionally, due to the aftershocks in combination with a mountainous landscape, the chance on landslide will increase considerably.

Update 13:41 UTC, Monday 22nd April :
A total of 198 rescuers from Russia will arrive at an airport in southwest China’s Sichuan Province around noon on Monday and rush to the quake-hit Ya’an City, according to the provincial seismological bureau. The headquarters of the China Earthquake Administration has advised the Russian rescuers to go the worst-hit Baoxing County.
- Many governments from all over the world have offered condolences to the Chinese people for their hard suffering.
- Army helicopters have operated the first airdrop operations to deliver food and water for thousands of homeless survivors. Loaded with bottled water, instant noodles and other food, an Air Force helicopter took off from Qionglai Airport to Baosheng township. The Air Force has also deployed a second helicopter to drop food and water to Baosheng.
- 2360 aftershocks have been recorded by seismologists since the mainshock. Only a small percentage has been felt by the people. ER has the impression that the frequency of the moderate to strong aftershocks has been seriously dropped today. No guarantee however that it will be over.
- 1.5 million people have been affected by this earthquake in various ways
- Good news from Baoxing county where communications have now been restored
- Electricity has been restored in Lushan county

Update 13:03 UTC, Monday 22nd April :
- People in the earthquake zone are picking up their daily work. Shops and markets are open like usual and traders are telling journalists that they sell their usual amount of products.
- Traffic is almost normally again in Ya’an except for what is called “rescue highways” reserved for rescue and earthquake linked services.
- Insurance companies have started to payout the first compensations for earthquake related filings.

Chinese rescue workers are in a race against time to save countless lives as aftershocks, landslides and rain hamper rescue efforts in Sichuan quake zone.

Meishan City has come through with their estimate of losses with some staggering numbers:-
Buildings both residential, commercial and industrial have had 352165 rooms damaged to various extents with a total loss of 2.036 billion yuan (330 million USD).
Damage to roads and bridges has caused 882 million yuan damage (143 million USD)
Damage to reservoirs, ditches, dikes, water infrastructure has caused 372 million CNY damage (60 million USD)
Damage to schools and hospitals – 261 million CNY (42 million USD).
Within Meishan city, Hongya County has 1.032 billion yuan of damages and Danleng county has 359 million CNY.
The total loss here is over 3.836 billion yuan, which when calculating back through the other damage locations, will probably lead to a 15-20 billion CNY total pricetag – around 2.5-3 billion USD.
Of this, the insurance loss will be likely less than 1%.

We again appeal to the world press to get their facts right. As with the Sichuan earthquake and many other Chinese earthquakes, CATDAT and earthquake-report.com are one of the only correct sources hence why our damaging earthquake reports and databases are the most reliable in the world. Chinese authorities count in rooms (roof between 2 lateral supports) and not in houses. It is impossible that there is more than 1 house per person!

Update 02:40 UTC, Monday 22nd April :
- Some slight changes to the death toll, with 186 deaths, and 24 missing = 210 people.
- The injuries have increased to 11826.
- There are some reports stating final losses of around 10 billion RMB (1.6 billion USD). It is expected that the final losses may be even greater.

Update 20:40 UTC :
- We are currently in the middle of the China night and information is scarce. SAR (search and rescue) troops are still fighting against time to save as much as lives as possible.  Common understanding in earthquake Rescue is that people almost never survive after being buried for more than 72 hours.
- Electricity supply has been partly resumed in Boaxing. An emergency team from the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) arrived at Baoxing, a county neighboring the epicenter of the 7.0-magnitude quake, by a roundabout route on Sunday and restored power supply to more than 1,000 households in two towns.
- The CCTV video’s below are showing the shaking in the greater earthquake area. The second sequence looks to have been recorded closest to the epicenter. A normal person cannot walk in such heavy shaking conditions. The Internationally adviced and accepted policy of DROP, COVER and HOLD cannot be seen on these CCTV images. Please be prepared for a major earthquake and know what to do.

Update 16:38 UTC :
- The risk for damaging landslides triggered by aftershocks will increase considerably tomorrow and the following days due to the rain.  Landslides do not only block roads and destroy properties, but are also killing a lot of people in hilly areas.
- UNICEF, The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) China Office is closely monitoring the impact on children living in the hardest hit areas. UNICEF is very concerned about the physical and emotional condition of children living near the epicenter of the earthquake due to the reports that such a high percentage of buildings have collapsed. We are standing by, ready to respond in whatever manner necessary.  UNICEF is in contact with its local partners to assess the effect of the severe tremor on children. In cooperation with China’s National Working Committee on Children and Women, UNICEF supports a network of more than 40 “Child Friendly Spaces” in Sichuan. Some of these Child Friendly Spaces are located close to the affected area.

Update 16:17 UTC :
- A total of 102 cultural sites have been damaged. Among these units were 24 National sites and 61 Provincial. The quake also damaged 12 museums (274 cultural relics affected).
- At 20:00 Sunday, a total of 1,339 aftershocks had been monitored in the epicenter of Lushan County. Four of them in between M5.0 and M5.9. Many have been felt by the people.
- The fatality record is still at 186. Most of the victims lived in Ya’an (population of 1.53 million!)
- At 16:00 Sunday, health department records state 8,761 people injured, from which 1,397 where hospitalized. According to the commission, a total of 1,125 medical workers have been dispatched to the quake-hit region, and the treatments of the wounded has been conducted mainly in seven neighboring cities including Ya’an and Chengdu.
- After two days of work, traffic was preliminarily restored on a quake-damaged section of the S210 highway that connects the isolated Baoxing County with neighboring Lushan County, the epicenter of the quake.
- The giant pandas at the Wolong Nature Reserve in Ya’an were neither killed or injured during the earthquake.

- So many human tragedies – Lu Jingkang lost her daughter from the Ya’an earthquake in Southwest China’s Sichuan province on April 20, five years after she lost her son in the deadly Wenchuan earthquake.

- The central Chinese government has allocated 1 billion yuan ($162 million) for disaster relief to the quake zones in Sichuan on Sunday, said the Ministry of Finance.

Update 11:31 UTC :
- Sichuan provincial government held a press conference on Sunday and reported that :
—- 2986 kilometers of road and 327 bridges damaged
—- 24 substations and 224 power lines destroyed
—- 724 fixed and mobile communication base stations damaged
—- Communication breakdown in 16 townships.
- A helicopter carrying China Rescue members returned after experiencing unstable, strong turbulence on its way to quake-hit Baoxing county.
- Ningkang Dam, damaged in the Ya’an earthquake, has been switched off due to the safety concern over national highway 318, causing water shortage to more than 10,000 residents in Quantian county, Local authorities are building pipelines to deliver water from the dam to residents.

Offers for international Assistance
China thanked the international community on Sunday for offering assistance.
“The Chinese government and people are sincerely grateful to various means of assistance offered by some countries,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement.
Stressing the Chinese government is going all out to carry out rescue work, Qin said the country has guaranteed rescue and medical treatment capability and sufficient rescue materials.
“Considering the inconvenient traffic and telecommunications in quake zone, foreign rescue and medical teams and materials are not required now,” Qin said, adding that China will make requests if needed.

Update 09:16 UTC : We do see a quick climb in readers from China at this moment. The aftershock was reported as a Ml5.4 aftershock, It will probably be further damaging unstable buildings and are a real risk for SAR teams (Search and Rescue)

Update 08:36 UTC : The numbers of injured are contradictory depending of the source.
- The Ministry of Justice has ordered judiciary departments to ensure stability of prisons in the damaged earthquake area in Sichuan.
- Two medical teams from Chengdu will be transported by helicopter to Baoxing county, which was inaccessible by road.
- Armed forces involved in the relief mission are required to reach every village and all households in the affected areas to rescue survivors and treat the injured. They are also required to help in re-opening roads, transport materials, build shelters and providing supplies, according to a joint command of the Chengdu Military Area Command (MAC) on Sunday.

In Ya’an City – 400,000 rooms have been damaged (of which 12851 have collapsed)
- 34 reservoirs have been damaged and 2668 damaged drains. The building, agriculture, forestry, water and economic losses total around 1.43 billion yuan (over 225 million USD).
- The city has a need to settle 48,915 families at this point, however some of these are as a temporary precaution.

In Zigong City – 8276 people have been affected of which 1874 people have been relocated.
- 6581 rooms have been damaged, with 982 rooms collapsed. (There are around 3.5 rooms per house, however collapsed room sometimes only occur in one room of a house.) Total losses currently are 106.17 million RMB (around 17 million USD).

In Deyang City – 2 dead, 57 injured, 150000 people affected (means they have felt the earthquake, had power outages or were generally in the area. The current losses total 59 million RMB (just under 10 million USD)

In Meishan City – 177656 people affected with 1 dead, 30 injured, 1392 people relocated. Ranging damage to 23032 families homes, or 86710 rooms. The total losses currently are around 217.89 million RMB, (around 35 million USD)

In Neijiang City – 3 counties and 84 townships affected, 88 rooms collapsed, 1231 rooms damaged, damage to 3 high voltage lines, 118.6km damaged irrigation channels, 34km damaged roads, 8 slight injuries. The total losses are around 274.54 million RMB (around 43 million USD).

Update 05:28 UTC
- Death toll has been updated by the Sichuan earthquake bureau with it having risen to 180, with 24 people still missing.
- 11,492 people have been injured, 980 of which classified seriously
- 1.5 million people have been affected, with around 120,000 being relocated at this point. (about the same numbers as the Yunnan quakes last year).
- 2 major aftershocks of M5.2 and M5.0 occurred in the last few hours, which have added to losses.
- 1.981 billion Yuan is the current direct economic loss estimate (around $300 million USD), however this is expected to rise in the coming days.

This unfortunately gives a total of 181 people. Over 11000 have been injured.

Update 21:14 UTC – Strong aftershock at 04:53 local time. M5.0 at a depth of 16 km. As a lot of people of damaged houses will be sleeping in tents or in open air, we believe that this earthquake will not generate more injuries or fatalities. Unstable buildings and rescue workers  finding their way in the debris may have got a potential risk.
- A total of 846 aftershocks have been recorded, including 57 above 3.0 magnitude and 3 between 5.0-5.9 magnitude.

Update 20:00 UTC – We expect that the death toll will rise in the coming hours slightly with the sunlight. In addition, more information will come to hand with regard to the number of damaged rooms, with significantly more than 40,000 currently quoted. The number is expected to be closer to 500,000 rooms, with the Sichuan quake in 2008 having destroyed 5,600,000 rooms (around 1.5 million houses) and damaged 21,000,000 rooms (around 6 million houses).
- Over 700 landslides have been registered.

Update 19:55 UTC – According to the Ya’an City Earthquake Disaster Mitigation report: As of April 21st, the number of deaths has reached 145 people with an additional 16 people missing with the number of injured reaching 6700 people of which 494 people are severely injured.
- There have been 846 aftershocks with 57 of these being over M3.0 (likely felt). Over M5.0 there have been 2 aftershocks with the largest coming at 11.34am local time on the 20th with a magnitude of M5.3.
14 aftershocks have been between M4.0 and M4.9, and an additional 41 between 3.0 and 3.9.

Update 19:40 UTC – Of the 161 presumed dead, 16 are still missing, 145 are confirmed dead.
- Nearly 50% of collapsed houses previously reported from Lushan county was in the old town. In other locations the percentages were much lower.
- The Lushan county earthquake disaster relief headquarters have the following number should there be any major concerns or people are stuck in the epicentral region who are only english speaking:-

- The Premier, Li Keqiang has promised 10 Yuan and 1kg grain per day for each person affected by this quake as per the 5.12 earthquake ruling.
- In addition, 60000-70000 tents will be sent to the area if needed.
- The rescue groups are still working to look for victims, as they may then save a number of victims as up to 72 hours is usually the golden window for saving people under the rubble, however there are instances of up to 10 days from previous earthquakes within which people have been saved.

Update 19:30 UTC -
- The death toll at the moment remains at 161.
- In addition, 200 million RMB (around 30 million USD) has been set aside by the CDB just as emergency credit for the city of Ya’an.
- It is expected the losses will reach over 5 billion RMB.
- 150000 people have been affected, many will be temporarily relocated.
- There has been many donations from groups such as private charities, table tennis teams, businesses and many more.
- 30,000 relief tents, 50,000 blankets and 10,000 folding beds, 20,000 disaster relief tents and 50,000 quilts have been sent to the epicentral region, giving an indication to the numbers of homeless people.

Update 17:15 UTC – 161 people have been reported as killed so far (some are still missing which indicates that this number will further rise the coming hours. Max. delay to get people from below the rubble is approx. 72 hours. The weather conditions are favourable in Sichuan until tomorrow noon, after that the weather will be worsening (drizzle and rain for the next 3 days).

Update 16:35 UTC – This is an overview of the main points reiterated during the Press conference of the Sichuan governor earlier tonight (local time)
- More than 5,600 people were injured from whom 400 seriously. 140,000 people need to be relocated.
- It is one of the most destructive earthquakes in China in recent years. A 8.0-magnitude quake in Wenchuan county in Sichuan Province left 87,000 dead or missing (numbers vary depending the source) in May 12, 2008.
- Most of the old brick-wood houses were destroyed by the earthquake and parts of the brick-concrete houses were seriously damaged, according to Xinhua reporters at Gucheng village of Longmen township, the epicenter of the quake.
- Soldiers are racing against time in search of survivors in the debris in the village.
- Among some 7,000 houses in Longmen township, 5,000 collapsed in the quake.
- Hundred of tents have arrived at the village but the villagers still need 8,000 more tents.
- Ya’an (140 km from Chengdu) has a population of 1.53 million and is known as the hometown of the giant panda.
-  President Xi Jinping on Saturday ordered all-out measures to rescue victims and minimize casualties soon after the quake. He asked to strengthen seismic monitoring, take concrete steps to prevent secondary disasters, properly relocate people affected by the disaster, and maintain social stability of the quake zone.

-  The Communist Party of China Central Committee and Xi entrusted Premier Li Keqiang to direct the quake-relief work, who arrived at the quake-zone in the afternoon. Li took a helicopter to the epicenter and called a meeting at around 6 p.m. at the front-line headquarters in Longmen township. “Life is the most important thing and the top priority is saving lives, ” Li said. No minute or even second should be delayed during the “golden rescue period” in the first 72 hours after the quake.
Li urged rescuers to examine every house to ensure all the injured residents are saved amid continuous aftershocks. He also ordered the guarantee of accommodation, food and safe water for residents in the quake zone as well as measures against any epidemic situation.
- Emergency teams of ministries, armed forces and armed police are heading to the quake zone.
- Hardest-hit areas : townships of Longmen and Qingren.
- “Old houses in Gucheng village with a population of 3,000, completely collapsed. More than 95 percent of the houses in the village are uninhabitable and will need to be checked.
- Vehicles damaged by rolling rocks were seen in Lushan. Houses along a street in the Lushan county seat have also collapsed.
- Patients are receiving medical treatment on the ground in front of the Lushan County Hospital (they are treated in open space to avoid falling debris from possible aftershocks)
- The water and electricity supply in the county has been cut off due to the quake.
- Landslides have blocked traffic in many places across the county and two barrier lakes caused by the landslides are posing risks for the rescue efforts.
- Bifeng Gorge, a panda research base affiliated to the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, is only 47 km from the epicenter. But there have no reports of human or panda casualties.
- About 3,870 armed police have arrived in Lushan county to assist with rescue efforts.
- More than 10,000 soldiers, including 8,000 field forces and 5,000 militia, have arrived at the disaster-hit areas by foot, trucks and helicopters.
- The soldiers will search for survivors household by household and distribute materials to the affected villages.
- Sadly, a military vehicle carrying 17 soldiers en route to the quake-hit area plummeted off a cliff around Saturday noon, killing one soldier and badly injured two.
- About 200 technicians from China Mobile (Sichuan branch) have been dispatched to disaster-hit areas to repair the telecommunications network.
- Infrastructures remain intact in Sichuan but are badly damaged and broken in the epicenter and nearby.
- The State Grid Corporation of China (electricity)  said the major lines in the province are operating smoothly, but those in the quake-hit area are severely damaged.
- In Lushan county, two transformer substations have halted service, with one of them unable to resume operation. Five hydropower stations in Ya’an are disconnected.
- According to the nation’s major telecommunications companies, as many as 279 telecommunication base stations have collapsed due to the quake (ER repeats over and over that also base stations should be earthquake resistant – Telecommunications base stations are collapsing all over the world, again and again …).
- The earthquake has also damaged 34 reservoirs or dams in Sichuan and affected the water supply for 303,000 people, according to the provincial water resources department.
- Sichuan has rich oil and gas resources, with many pipelines and refineries. Sinopec, Asia’s largest refiner, said no damage had been reported at its production facilities in the quake-hit regions.

Update 15:16 UTC : The video below shows the Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang visiting the heavily damaged epicenter area. We can confirm that the authorities almost immediately after the earthquake started bringing out reports and sending reinforcements to the earthquake zone. New leaders who really want to be an example for the population.
Li Keqiang was on the ground while the aftershocks were still going on.

Update 15:00 UTC
- Firefighters have pulled out 93 people from collapsed structures, including 91 survivors, as of 7:40 p.m Saturday
- The provincial military command also distributed over 1,000 sets of tents, small engines, protective oral-nasal masks and gloves to the area.
- In the meantime, the PLA Air Force (PLAAF) has opened four landing spots for helicopters in county seat and three townships of Lushan. The PLAAF have sent more than 10 sorties of rescue resources to the area.
- The PLA’s General Staff Department on Saturday afternoon decided to equip a total of 260 sets of Beidou satellite positioning advices to the military units in the disaster area, and 103 sets have already entered the area as of 5 p.m. Beijing Time.

Update 14:50 UTC : It will be soon dark in China. Some electricity grids are still working but we can imagine that rescue work will be hampered by the night. Information from then on will be less informative. ER will however continue to bring you the latest information from the earthquake zone.

Update 14:19 UTC : The Governor of Sichuan is currently giving a detailed overview of what is going on in the earthquake zone and which efforts are being used to counter the misery.
- Chongqing eight houses collapsed, and one slightly injured
- Yunnan Province, nearly 900 houses were damaged
- Shaanxi Liuba County earthquake triggered the collapse of the mountain, one death

Update 14:19 UTC :  – Of the many injured, 5,427 came from Ya’an. One person was even killed in the Shaanxi province (Province of Xi’an). Even more surprised about some fatalities as far as a couple of hundred km from the epicenter. As we do not know the exact reason of their deth, it may also have been secondary reason like heart attacks etc.

Update 14:07 UTC :  34 reservoirs have been damaged to a different extend. Not dangerous at this moment, but in case of a major M6+ aftershock, these reservoirs are forming a real risk to all the villages at lower levels.
The authorities have in the meanwhile evacuated the villages who have the highest risk to be flooded in case of a reservoir burst.
- 41 aftershocks have been recorded at a Magnitude M3 or higher.

- Donations numbers are now shown on the Chinese TV and people start to donate to empower the rescue efforts. Also private organizations are helping not only with money but also by sending goods and offering transport means.

Update 13:45 UTC : Chinese rescue forces are acknowledging the important role of the Internet in today’s earthquake. As Mobile communications were only short time interrupted, people did start to send pictures from the devastation together with their location to the Rescue numbers.  Even more, people are also using Portable routers enabling other people to make use of their 3G signal. Modern technology at the side of rescue efforts.

Update 12:31 UTC : Earthquake-report.com expresses their admiration towards the Chinese SAR and Relief forces. They are doing a very great job. Chinese authorities have invested huge amounts of money in the organization of disaster response. It will not be perfect and people will be critical from all sites, but as 24/24 7/7 followers of earthquake disasters we are well placed to compare disaster response. We can only admire the efforts of the Chinese community.

Update 12:26 UTC : The death toll has further risen to 156.  More than 2,000 people injured and this is currently expected to increase with numbers of slightly injured yet to be added from certain locations.

Update 12:22 UTC : As could be expected, aftershocks are continuing to strike the greater earthquake area, until now only limited in strength (maximum M5.2 ). Let’s hope that there will be no M6 in the coming days. M6.0+ would be dangerous for unstable damaged structures and for the rescue personnel working.

Update 11:50 UTC: 54 people were rescued from collapsed houses in recent hours. Among them, two children and a pregnant woman.

It is impossible to tell the individual stories of all earthquake victims here. But we think this one is the best example  to show the cruelty of this fatal quake:
A seven year old child was rescued from his collapsed home. He survived 9 hours in the arms of his killed mother. She protected the life of this boy with her body and had to die for it, while her son survived the quake without physical injuries.

Update 11:05 UTC : Number of casualities in Chengdu is also rising. 6 people were killed and 188 more injured in this town. So far, most of the casualities (57) coming from Lushan, one of the towns very close to the epicenter.
There are reports of 200 people in a small village trapped by a landslide blocking a road.

Update 09:45 UTC : Overview of earthquake fatalities (total so far: 113) by town:
Lushan : 57, Baoxing : 6, Chengdu : 4, Tianquan : 3, Xinjin : 1, Hongya : 1, Luding : 1,  Deyang : 1 and unknown: 39

Update 09:31 UTC : 113 people are confirmed dead. Meanwhile, it is estimated, that 90% of all houses in Ya’an area were damaged due to the earthquake.

Update 09:27 UTC : Chengdu, the largest town of Sichuan with approx. 10 mio inhabitants, is 100 northeast of the epicenter. 4 people were killed and 125 more were injured there by the quake.

Update 09:20 UTC : The good news: A man in Ya’an was found under the debris of a collapsed house. He was unconscious but obviously alive.

Update 09:11 UTC : A rumor in the internet currently scares people in Sichuan. It says Chengdu will be hit by an M 9.3 earthquake in the coming days. Of course this rumor is without any scientific evidence. We are shocked that some people use this terrible situation for a message like this. All we can say is, earthquakes are not predictable, neither by scientist, nor by “normal” people. So don’t believe something like this!

Update 09:01 UTC : According to new reports, more than 3000 people were injured by the quake. Death toll is still at 102.

Update 08:56 UTC : One of the injured soldiers, whose bus falled into a river, died in hospital.

Update 08:49 UTC : New death tolls now arriving every few minutes. After new correction at leas 102 people are confirmed dead.

Update 08:40 UTC : Unfortunately we have to say that the death toll reached the number of 100.
Also a good news: A popular Chinese online news agency donates 1 mio. chinese Yuan (~160000 US-Dollar) for the earthquake victims.  Money, that is urgently needed.

Update 08:30 UTC : Death toll rises to 82.

Update 08:27 UTC : A bus carrying 17 soldiers to earthquake area fell down a cliff into a river. One of the soldiers died, 5 others were seriously injured.

Update 08:05 UTC : About 80,000 prisoners have been evacuated from prisons in Sichuan. Among them, more than 2,000 were evacuated from a prison in Ya’an county. No deaths were reported among the prisoners, but one person was injured in the leg. Yes, this number of 80,000 is correct – this is for the whole of Sichuan. This must be an amazing amount of coordination by police.

Update 08:03 UTC : The Chinese response has been exceptional with the scale of the disaster also helping things compared to the 2008 earthquake. The Chinese are the best in the world for disaster response, with provincial seismological bureaus and even city-based disaster response.

Update 08:01 UTC : The death toll remains at 78, with around 2500 injured and 80,000 displaced/relocated/affected. It is likely that the economic losses will be over 1 billion USD, but less than 5 billion USD (up to 30 billion RMB). This depends a lot on the damage extent in Ya’an City.

Update 07:59 UTC : The earthquake has also had a few births, with one reported from an earthquake shelter, so it is not all gloomy.

Update 07:57 UTC : The power grid of Lushan county was damaged and water supply was cut off after the quake. Tents, water and food are badly needed.
- No student deaths have been reported, according to the education authority.

Update 07:32 UTC : 78 deaths and 2260 injured are the current numbers coming out of Sichuan. We are waiting for second confirmation.

Update 07:29 UTC : Unfortunately, there has been 1 death and 7 injured as a result of a car crash from soldiers coming to rescue people in Ya’an. Our thoughts are with their families as with all of the affected people.

Update 07:24 UTC : The Ministry of Civil affairs has launched a National Emergency III response, which is less than a IV response.

Cracks can be seen in Modong Reservoir and Miaoxi Reservoir in Lushan county, and Shiyang Reservoir in Tianquan county. People downstream of this have been evacuated and structural checks are being made to the reservoirs.
Here is a more global view of reservoir hazard due to earthquakes. A reminder that the risk of the green dots is probably more as most countries of low seismicity do not have as higher quality earthquake construction.

The hazard of dams can be seen on the following diagram which combines the GRanD database with GSHAP to show the hazard of worldwide reservoirs – the risk however, can be much more in locations which don’t build for big earthquakes. A few reservoirs in this earthquake have seen damage. (Daniell, 2012)

Update 07:15 UTC : Like the 2008 Sichuan earthquake a lot of landslides have been seen from aerial footage of the earthquake.
The National Red Cross starts Emergency Response Mechanism for this earthquake and in addition, there are around 2000 medical workers currently on the scene.

Update 07:08 UTC : Although aftershocks can occur within 1.5 fault lengths of an earthquake, this is likely not an aftershock of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. It is significantly far away from the end of the earthquake slip & fault model that was computed by seismologists after. It is possibly the stress transfer however from the 2008 earthquake which may have influenced this quake with a slight increase in stress in the fault zones around the 2008 fault break due to stress release and transfer.

Update 07:03 UTC : This quake has been felt in all the surrounding Provinces (see our I Have Felt It reports below). The Chengdu Railway system has been partially reopened and in addition the prime minister is currently flying over the scene to gauge the destruction.

Update 07:00 UTC : The total of 71 deaths remains. As of 13:00 local time, firefighters from Sichuan province have rescued 34 people out of the debris of the quake, of whom 32 people, including a pregnant woman and two children, survived.

Update 06:55 UTC : Flood prevention office of Lushan county said that cracks can be seen in Modong Reservoir and Miaoxi Reservoir in Lushan county, and Shiyang Reservoir in Tianquan county. People in downstream have been evacuated.

Update 06:50 UTC : 71 have now been confirmed killed (at least from CCTV sources). All patients in Lushan hospital are sound and safe. Firefighters in Ya’an saved 9 rubble-trapped people. CCTV says 71 have been killed but still shows a TV banner with 56 deaths, so we will need to be cautious however since CCTV gets info from Rescue authorities directly this is a better source than Reuters!

Update 06:46 UTC : Cracks have appeared in some Lushan reservoirs. This could prove dangerous if another major quake comes along before repairs can be made. The 1933 Diexi earthquake some of our readers will remember caused over 5000 deaths via flooding after downstream towns were decimated by a huge wave of water from a failed reservoir and quake lakes formed by landslides.

Update 06:45 UTC : We have unconfirmed reports of 58 deaths.

Update 06:35 UTC : As with the “fake death toll” of Reuters sources in the Iran earthquake about a week ago of 40 deaths in Iran when there were actually 0 killed in Iran, there is no evidence that this earthquake has killed over 57 people despite all the death tolls above them currently in world press.

Update 06:30 UTC : The toll of 135 severely injured and 600-700 slightly injured is expected to rise. Ya’an City has around 1.53 million people living over an area of 15,300km2. As for the 57 deaths, this toll has not changed for a long time, and is generally updated fast in China following these events like the 7.9 earthquakes which killed 81 people last year.

Update 06:27 UTC : Along with the 6600+ troops that have been sent to the area previously in the last few hours – (this coordination and rescue effort is nothing short of amazing), 40 emergency repair vehicles, 20 satellite phones, 100 kilometers of fiber optic cable, 128 oil tankers, emergency communications vehicles, etc. emergency communications supplies, tents, drinking water and many more supplies have been sent to the area.

This will allow for quick resupply of basic needs for the people in Ya’an and other majorly affected areas.

Update 06:07 UTC : The video below is showing the aerial images we have reported from before. The Chinese Prime Minister is currently in an airplane towards the epicenter area to see with his own eyes what the extend of the damage is.

Chongqing - We were on the 17th floor and the we felt quick pulse of light shaking for about 15s ChengDU - in 15th floor is shaking hardly, first horizon then vertical.but then building is fine. Chengdu/Huaxiba - Experienced about 14 aftershocks from then. Seems to have calmed down by now (9:45am) Meishan - I was sleeping, I thought it was a nightmare, at the end I got out the bed and went outside, the people were outside already, the first earthquake in my life, scary!! Nanchong - I felt it , but it lasted 2 seconds for me as I woke up very late. My collegues says it lasted for 20 sec. Wenjiang (Chengdu) - J'etait eveille mais dans mon lit. Mon colocataire s'est reveille et nous avons courru sous la table du salon. Ca a dure une trentaine de secondes. Quelques repliques par la suite de faible intensite. Chongqing - I am in chongqing this is my qq number 1918150308， It is usualy hard to find people to talk to here in China so it's good to hear or see foreigners speaking. I felt my bed moving and then heard people screaming a little outside Chengdu - on the 10th floor. The first big one at about 8:00 shook pretty strong, swinging cabinet doors open, swaying lights, lasted about 30 seconds. Most residents fled to the street, clothed or unclothed. Last experience was a 5.4 quake in Adelaide, Australia in 1954. This one was quite frightening for me. The quick response from the government was absolutely amazing. Aftershocks were felt here until 12pm Chongqing - Felt like a heavy pile-driver hammering foundations next door. Hanging towel swinging slightly. I live at a 15th floor in a very densely populated neighbourhood in JFB, with very high buildings (+20stories) of Maoist construction, right behind the new Shangri-La hotel (58+stories) ; My main thought then: not a single one of this huge old concrete buildings would survive a direct hit, it would be an absolute mess in Chongqing. Beibei district, Chongqing - The bed was shaking but i didn't realize it's an earthquake. Many of my classmates rushed out of their rooms, some even naked. Well, May God bless Ya'an and China! Chengdu - Felt the initial shake, some things fell of shelves, my bed was shaking, books shelves, etc. Was feeling aftershocks throughout the day.

Important update April 18 – 10:17 UTC
Pakistani sources report that the earthquake destroyed 3,000 houses in Mashkeel, Pakistan’s border province with Iran.
Officials said a total of 19,000 people were reported to be in need of shelter and wait for help.
Aid materials can only be sent by military helicopters, as relief trucks are hindered by the blocked roads and desert terrain. Civil aid organizations have not reached the region yet.
Military sent a large scale of search & rescue team and a field hospital was established in the region.
A total of 36 people got killed, 150 others were injured in Pakistan alone.
Islamabad administration hasn’t replied to the offers of international agencies yet.

Understanding the Massive M7.8 Iran – Pakistan earthquake

The April 16, 2013 M 7.8 earthquake east of Khash, Iran, occurred as a result of normal faulting at an intermediate depth in the Arabian plate lithosphere, approximately 80 km beneath the Earth’s surface.
Regional tectonics are dominated by the collisions of the Arabian and India plates with Eurasia; at the longitude of this event, the Arabian plate is converging towards the north-northeast at a rate of approximately 37 mm/yr with respect to the Eurasian plate.
Arabian plate lithosphere is subducted beneath the Eurasian plate at the Makran coast of Pakistan and Iran, and becomes progressively deeper to the north.
The subducted Arabian plate is known to be seismically active to depths of about 160 km. The frequency of moderate and large earthquakes within the subducted Arabian plate is not high compared with similar events in some other subducted plates worldwide, but several earthquakes have occurred within this slab in the region of today’s event over the past 40 years, including a magnitude 6.7 shock 50 km to the south in 1983.
In January of 2011, a M 7.2 earthquake occurred approximately 200 km to the east, in a similar tectonic environment to the April 16 earthquake.

- The death toll currently stands at somewhere between 30 and 35 in Pakistan and 0 in Iran. Over 150 have been injured in Pakistan.
27 people are now confirmed injured in Iran. We have decreased the earlier number of 1 to O for Iran as we could not find a reconfirmation of the Iranian fatality.
- 1000+ houses have been damaged to some extent in Pakistan.
- 25 villages (15 in Khash, 10 in Saravan) have been reviewed by Red Crescent. Only 3 destroyed houses have been found at this point in the village Qadrabad in Khash, however there has been major damage in Pakistan across the border in Soran.
- It is interesting to see why there has been significant damage across the border in Pakistan. There could be “directivity” at play in terms of a stronger direction of earthquake energy in one direction along the fault break causing higher ground motion over the border.
- Another reason could be for more vulnerable building typologies being used across the border in Pakistan.
- In Iran, there are many houses with cracks and moderate damage therefore given the warm temperatures it has been advised that residents of some of these houses stay outside for a while for fear of aftershocks.
- 2,000 tents, 5,000 blankets and 500 food packages are part of the expedition sent by the Red Crescent in South Khorasan province.

Update 21:33 UTC :
The United States offered to provide humanitarian assistance to the victims of the Tuesday’s massive earthquake that severely jolted parts of Pakistan’s Balochistan province bordering Iran. We offer our condolences to the families who lost loved ones during the earthquake,” a State Department spokesman said.
“The United States does stand ready to assist either Iran or Pakistan at this point,”  Patrick Ventrell said in response to a question at the daily briefing.

Update 21:15 UTC :
As you can see below, we have listed only 4 aftershocks of M3.5 or more since the mainshock. These were reported by the international agencies. Also the Iranian seismological agency has counted only 4 which is very few for such a massive earthquake.

The death toll in Pakistan has further increased to 34 according to Pakistan TV. 150 have been reported injured in Mashkeel Tehsil.
Over 1‚000 houses have been damaged in the area.

Iranian media now reports the first fatality inside Iran. No specifics where it happened or the conditions. This is however not confirmed by any other Iranian source.

Update 16:39 UTC :
We, at ER are somewhat puzzled why the main devastation and fatalities are being reported from a relatively big distance in Pakistan. The image below shows probably why ! The Mashkeel area looks like a dry lake on Google Earth and the surrounding cities are showing soft soil and farming fields, this contrary to a rocky soil in Iran (Rocks are decreasing the shaking impact).
The many images below so show what we are trying to explain. The image just below this text shows a satellite Google map and one can see clearly the many rivers arriving in the Mashkeel lake. These rivers may have transported huge amounts of sediment, sediment who will be propagating the earthquake waves at full force ( Remember the Mexico City liquefaction earthquake).
Science will have a huge work in defining what triggered the devastation in Pakistan.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso have expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives and damage to property caused by the earthquake.In Iran at least forty people have been killed and hundreds were injured.

German TV has just released a number of 30 fatalities in Pakistan. Pakistan TV however mentions 26 deaths (21 in Mashkeel and 5 in Panjgur). Sad numbers.

Iran update : Iranian sources now report 27 injuries from which 3 have been hospitalized.

The quake death toll keeps climbing and has reached 21 people so far.  About 100 people have been reported injured so far. Pakistani troops started rescue and relief operations in the earthquake-stricken areas.  According to authorities, the rescuers will distribute tents, food and supplies to the earthquake-stricken areas.

- Fardanews Iran is stating that so far, inside Iran, only 27 people were reported injured
- Reuters reports now 13 fatalities inside Baluchistan, Pakistan (among the deaths, 3 children).
- A lot of damage based on this report but as saif earlier, no confirmation as yet.

- Indian media quoting Radio Pakistan are now talking about 12 deaths and a lot of injured in inside western Pakistan. No Pakistan media are confirming this news.  Panjgur and Kharan districts of Balochistan, the quted districs where some buildings presumably collapsed, are indeed neighboring areas to Iran.  The following hours will make sure if this news is correct. We keep searching for confirmation in to be trusted sources.

Very Important update 13:44 UTC :
– IRAN, by means of the Governor of the hit province has OFFICIALLY DENIED that there were 40 fatalities.  He said that communications and infrastructure has been affected.
- As further assessment is underway in Iran, we expect that it will take several more hours before a serious report will be published

Important update 13:18 UTC :
- There is a total confusion about the damage and possible fatalities / injured. The earthquake occurred in a remote sparsely populated area in Iran. Assessment teams and 3 helicopters and rescue teams have been send to the epicenter area, but so far NO news from them.
- Some sources in India are taking about 5 fatalities inside Pakistan (Baluchistan). In Mashkel area of Kharan, 3 children and 2 adults would have been killed and many injured have been brought to a nearby military hospital. We cannot confirm this news based on a second independent source.

- We are irritated by the world press who is looking for ghost fatalities. In their search and copy/paste work they are mixing 2 earthquakes, the one from last week who led to the death of 41 people and today’s one. Reports that are appearing here and there that also some people have been killed in Pakistan could not be confirmed inside Pakistan.

- UGS Pager has again changed the expected impact stating now that the Max shaking would be very strong (MMI VII) near the epicenter. This is the third map we publish, not to blemish USGS but to proof that seismology is not an exact science and needs a lot of recalculation.
- The shaking intensity is now expected to be (theoretical) :
MMI VI (strong shaking) Khash 70,000 inhabitants
MMI V (moderate shaking) : Iranshahr, Zahedan, Panjgur,  ‘Alaqahdari Dishu and Turbat
MMI IV (light shaking) : Mirabad, Rudbar, Khan Neshin and Dalbandin

- We have now confirmed reports of 3 injured people in Saravan (Iran) and 5 injured people in Pakistan (various locations)  (probably shock related).
- Some cracks are reported in houses closer to the epicenter.
- 100 rescuers are on their way to the epicenter area and will probably need approx. 5 hours to reach the epicenter area.

Important update 12:19 UTC :
At the moment of writing we have NO REASON and NO REPORT of any deaths.
The 40 fatalities reported in many sites (and copied, copied, copied) are probably taken from the fatalities of last week earthquake. You should NOT believe this at this moment.
We are proud to say that this site is probably one of the most reliable in the world, due to our experience in the field.

Population statistics of people living within a certain radius near the epicenter :
100 km    290000 people,  75 km    50000 people, 50 km    17000 people, 20 km     <1000 people,  10 km     <1000 people, 5 km     <1000 people and 2 km no people
We have to be careful with these data as extracting the exact epicenter location is very tricky. An error margin of 10 to 20 km is normal.
- A similar depth earthquake (our viewers would remember) happened in January 2011 in Pakistan – This was Mw7.2 and a bit shallower, and caused 1 direct death and 2 indirect deaths with around 200 houses damaged.
- We expect that there will be damage however, we hope the fatalities will be kept to a minimum.
- According to the last census, the population of Saravan is 173000, khash 290000 and suran 69000 – Probably another several thousand in the nearby villages…

Update 12:08 UTC :
- Historic Fault depths are often right and also in this case, James Daniell, our CATDAT Damage specialist had a hard time to believe the shallow depths reported at the beginning (confusing data are nothing special for seismology). A massive earthquakes in the past showed a depth of 64 km. At this moment depths are varying from 51 to 82 km, a world of difference for damage prediction.
- Lets hope that the assessment and Rescue teams will find only material damage (we are sure that there will be damage).
- This is the second major earthquake to be felt in the Emirates region in less than a week !, however both quakes are not necessarily related.

Very important Update 11:57 UTC :
- USGS has also changed the depth of the hypocenter from 17 km to 82 and changed the color of his pager to GREEN = they expect NO fatalities.
- We are giving a lot of credit to this change as also the close by 1983 earthquake had no fatalities and was deep too.

Update 11:53 UTC  :
- Iran has send 12 assessment teams to the earthquake epicenter area.
- we have still no confidence in the various seismological reports. They are still conflicting on the depth of the hypocenter. The depth of an earthquake is a main trigger for damage estimates.
- Some newspapers are publishing deaths but we have to stress that this is too soon. The numbers may be derived of earlier earthquakes. As soon as we have official data or to be trusted numbers, we will publish them immediately.

Important update 11:44 UTC  : Iran seismological Institute is also reporting a depth of 95 km at this moment (earlier shallower). We like this extremely.
- Red Crescent Iran is sending 3 helicopters to the epicenter area and at least the 7 villages closest to the epicenter

- No accurate information on damage on hand at the moment, but according to some local sources 40 deaths are estimated

- Fars news (persian) quotes the geophysical institute of tehran universuty: depth of 18km
- 15 seconds of shaking in the UAE

Sharjah, UAE - Pictures on wall moved a little only felt it sitting down, animals didn't react Dubai - Scary! Dubai - Very Minor shaking felt in my house. Doors swung back and a forth ever so slightly. Dubai - shaking Abu Dhabi - Moderate shaking for about 5 seconds in Abu Dhabi UAE - presume it's from Iran Dubai - 2.48pm 16 April 2013 Two earthquakes felt the second being stringer than the first. Wall , tables chairs moved and shook. Jodhpur - Very Mild earthquake felt in Jodhpur in Rai-Ka-Bagh area. Doha, Qatar - Miled shake lasted about 5-6 seconds. Didn't find cause to go down from the 8th Floor where I am, unlike last week's earthquake kiss of 6.3 in Iran, where all personnel ran to the ground for safety. RIYADH - Riyadh - Malaz; We were in Office and felt shaking of chair and building. Dubai - Chair "swaying" for 5-10 seconds at 10.50 UTC/14.50LT, furniture creaking. Dubai - The office was shaking Ambala Cantt, India - I was in my room on first floor and i started feeling the tremors. Karachi - Buildings were shaking clearly! Karachi - I felt some sudden strong jolts and vibration in the ground with mild to moderate shaking of laptop and dresser mirrors for a few seconds. Other parts of the city have experienced more severe shocks with people falling off their beds, and news reports are that some cracks are found in buildings but no damage to life or property have been reported. Dubai - I was about to have my lunch when I thought I started feeling dizzy, but my father soon exclaimed that why has everything started shaking. We then rushed down the building. It was scary. Didn't feel the need to go down from the 8th Floor where we are as the kiss seemed to be just a light earthquake kiss, unlike our first experience last week where all personnel ran for their safety from the 8th Floor to the ground; I am still feeling the muscle pains in both of my legs due to my 5' heels :). On the fourth floor of the five store building I felt my chair was swinging right-left twice. It was not pleasant. Sharjah - This was my first experience and honestly it was scary. Juabail - On 16th April 2013, I experienced earthquake at around 1:50 PM. It went on for about 20 seconds with fairly notable shakes twice for approx 4 seconds each, gap of 10 seconds in between. It was moderate shaking which was more than the previous earthquake earlier this month. UAE - I was in my Geography lesson when the April 2013 - I think it was the 16th? I'm not too sure - earthquake struck. It was about 10/15 minutes till the end of the school day when the shaking was felt. Then the fire alarms went off and we were sent home about 3 minutes early without our belongings as it was too risky to go back into the building at the time. School was open the following day though...

Understanding the tectonics behind the Southern Iran earthquake

Focal mechanism of this earthquake

The April 9, 2013 M6.3 earthquake in southern Iran occurred as result of northeast-southwest oriented thrust-type motion in the shallow crust of the Arabian plate.
The depth and style of faulting in this event are consistent with shortening of the shallow Arabian crust within the Zagros Mountains in response to active convergence between the Arabian and Eurasian plates. Because this event is an intraplate event, occurring almost 300 km south of the main plate boundary, and since the event likely did not break the surface, precise identification of the causative fault is difficult at this time.

On a broad scale, the seismotectonics of southern Iran are controlled by active convergence between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This motion manifests in two ways: subduction in the Makran which stretches from the mouth of the Persian Gulf eastward into Pakistan, and continental collision in the Zagros Mountains, which stretch from the Makran northward into Iraq and Turkey.

The April 9 event occurred within the Zagros fold-and-thrust belt – the portion of the Zagros Mountains that border the north shore of the Persian Gulf. At the latitude of the event, convergence rates between Arabia and Eurasia are approximately 30 mm/yr. The Zagros Mountains experience high rates of seismicity, with thrust-type events similar to the April 9 earthquake and right-lateral strike slip events common. Recent thrust-type events as large as M6 have occurred south of the April 9 epicentral area in the Bandar-e-Abbas region. Highly damaging events such as the 2003 M6.6 Bam earthquake occurred outside of the Zagros Mountains, north of the Makran subduction zone, 660 km to the east of the April 9 event. While the Zagros region experiences high rates of seismicity, large (>M7) surface rupturing earthquakes here are rare.
Over the past 40 years, 5 events of M6 or greater have occurred with 300 km of the April 9 earthquake. The closest was an M6.1 right-lateral strike slip event on March 1, 1994, which killed approximately 50 people.

Please consider that the best science cannot yet come up with a reliable prediction (specification of time, location and magnitude) of an earthquake. The site you link does not attempt to do this either, only stating there is a high likelihood of aftershocks in Iran. Given the large earthquake of yesterday, the occurrence of aftershocks are to be expected. However, the size of these aftershocks matters which can be larger than the main shock. We do not know this beforehand. In anycase, I looked through the link and there is no information on their “statistical methods” that I could find. My only request is not to misinterpret this or other information. There is no “Center for Global Earthquake Reporting – مرکزه لرزه نگاری جهانی” as implied in the Status; there is no reliable way of predicting earthquakes; and the best practice is to expect aftershocks on the fault where the earthquake occurred yesterday over the next few days or weeks.” – Dr. B. Update 16:52 UTC : 40 killed (2 twins were stuck under the debris but have been unharmed) and 1100 injured. Many buildings have also been damaged by aftershocks – 3100 in total are showing some form of damage.

Update 16:18 UTC : Unofficial statementas are currently mentioning a death toll of 42.
The governor of Iran’s Bushehr Province says reconstruction operations have begun in the areas of the province that were hardest hit by the recent earthquake, as immediate relief efforts are completed.
Fereydoun Hassanvand said on Wednesday that with the completion of relief and rescue operations in the quake-stricken areas, efforts to repair and rebuild water, power and communications networks in the affected districts of Shanbeh and Tasouj have already gotten underway. (source presstv / Iran)

The leader of Islamic Revolution, Ali Khamenei, following the traumatic earthquake disaster in Bushehr by issuing a message for the victims and survivors of the incident asked for patience and wishing recovery for them.

With regret and sadness I have received the news of the earth quake in the Bushehr province with its human casualties and devastations.
With prayer, I am asking for God’s mercy and forgiveness for the deceased and healing, patience and reward for the victims and survivors.
I would like to ask the honorable representative of the Supreme leader and respected province authorities, as well as government authorities [in Tehran] to use all your efforts to rescue the victims and to support and help the survivors.
I hope our beloved people from all over the country as always play their brilliant role to alleviate the suffering of the disaster victims.

UPDATE 11:30 - The death toll remains at 40.

UPDATE 11:30 - We have had a lot of requests and comments about a “prediction of a big earthquake” by www.world-earthquakes.com (we refuse to link to this website).
We would like to say to the public that although there is ALWAYS a minor chance of such an earthquake occurring there is A VERY LARGE CHANCE that it will not occur, and not to use such probabilities wrongly in comments on Facebook and Twitter.
There is also NO DOCUMENTATION from such a website.
A site which deals with real-time probabilities of earthquakes openly is http://www.openhazards.com/viewer. Here you will see the probability is much lower.
We would also like to remind our viewers that earthquakes cannot be predicted.

UPDATE 11:00 - At least 40 people have died and 1000 people have been injured as a result of this earthquake according to current government figures. Over 100 of the 1000 injured have been severely injured.

UPDATE 05:18 - Apart from the number of houses destroyed changing upward to 700, there has been good news in that the death toll has not changed from 37.

A very large aftershock of M5.6 struck the same region, however most people should be out of their houses and it is expected that fatalities will be kept to a minimum.

The relief and support given to victims has been commendable and many disaster relief staff and doctors and nurses are on site tending to the 100-150 severely injured.

UPDATE 03:00 - The pictures below are showing the damage in the village of Dashti, Iran. The death toll hasn’t changed since our update from yesterday evening.

There have been 3 villages that have been completely destroyed with the worst being that of Baghani, and another 47 that have some damage with the city of Khormoj having the most. Over 3000 households can be housed in emergency accommodation. So far it has been calculated that around 200 houses have major damage, thus less families are currently in accommodation.

With the cold weather, the main hope is to provide shelter for all people during the night, despite the ongoing aftershocks. Over 1000 tents have been transferred to the region. It is also hoped that the landslides have not engulfed any houses.

No damage has occurred in the oil fields of the Gulf, as well as Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar and Kuwait. They did however have some shaking and it was well felt (thank you for all the felt reports). In addition, there were some high rise buildings that were evacuated as a precaution.

It is of course nighttime now, and more of the destruction will be seen in the morning.

In addition:
“The earthquake in no way affected the normal situation at the [Bushehr nuclear] reactor. Personnel continue to work in the normal regime and radiation levels are fully within the norm,” RIA Novosti quoted an official at Atomstroyexport as saying.

UPDATE 15:34- Number of injured persons rose to 800. In the meantime, Japan and Turkey offered their help for earthquake victims.

UPDATE 15:02- 31 people were confirmed dead in Bushehr so far.

UPDATE 14:57- 23 villages are affected by the quake, the government says.

UPDATE 14:53- Number of injuries was raised to at least 650. Most of them were transfered to hospital. Rescue teams start to use sniffer dogs to look for spilled people.

UPDATE 14:45- Panic was also created in UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi-Arabia. People from higher buildings rushed to the streets. Some buildings in Dubai and Abu Dhabi (UAE) were evacuated after the quake. 

UPDATE 14:19- No damage has been reported from the oil fields yet, however they have had decent shaking up to MMI IV.

UPDATE 14:13- 500 people are confirmed injured so far. Regional water supply and electricity have been cut off by the quake. More than 1,000 tents have been transferred to Bushehr province.

SUMMARY 14:00- The towns closest to the epicenter have suffered greatly.
- The death toll remains at 12, however is expected to rise in the coming hours.
- Around 40,000 people are affected most of all.
- Landslides were seen.
- A M6.1 earthquake occurred at a depth of 10km in the sparsely populated Bushehr/Kaki region.
- The Bushehr nuclear facility is running smoothly.
- Rescue teams continue to work on retrieving bodies and rescuing survivors from the masonry rubble.

UPDATE 13:49- There are currently 100 rescuers on the scene. According to the rescuers, the towns of Baghani and Senate (bad Farsi translations) in Khormoj have been 100% destroyed (it is still unclear whether the entire village has been destroyed or just some buildings). There are fatalities and injuries that are expected.

UPDATE 13:41- It is as yet unclear if any houses have been affected by the major landslides and rockfalls that have occurred in the mountains.

UPDATE 13:36- The 4 closest villages are currently being assessed. Certain routes (like the highway) closest to the earthquake-stricken areas are closed. This earthquake is rated as CATDAT Red, and is unlikely to be CATDAT Dark Red.

UPDATE 13:33- Some of the aftershocks will also be lightly felt in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Qatar. It is quite likely however that no greater earthquakes will occur than the 6.1 that occurred earlier. The quake triggered panic in Dubai’s high-rise buildings and residents rushed out (it is unclear whether any injuries resulted). Some buildings in the Dubai Marina area have been evacuated and workers sent home according to Gulf News sources.

UPDATE 13:30- Villages in Kaki and closer have some homes that have suffered 100% destruction (collapsed according to the Iran classification). These are likely to be of masonry and it can be expected that a 5-15% fatality rate occurs in these buildings.

UPDATE 13:27- At least 12 people are reported dead.

UPDATE 13:23- The death toll has risen to 5. There are scenes of destruction in Kaki, with many destroyed houses being reported. In addition damage in Borozjan Bushehr and also Khormoj. The arrival of teams from Fars and Bushehr will allow for a better range of fatality information soon. The theoretical USGS PAGER model predicts around 200 fatalities as a median (35% chance between 100-1000 fatalities), so there is a high likelihood that a higher number of fatalities will occur than currently reported.

UPDATE:- Many aftershocks have hit the region. The death toll remains at 3, however is expected to rise.

UPDATE:- The Bushehr nuclear facility (around 100km from the quake) is functioning normally.

UPDATE:- 20 rescue personnel in 4 assessment teams, and 2 helicopters have been sent. Kaki city has some destroyed houses, and some poorly built rural houses in Bushehr (around 50-60km away) have cracking. It is expected that Kaki and Khormoj will have the most destruction.

UPDATE:- Kaki city actually has 10,000 people. Thus, there is more exposure than first thought. Unfortunately, death rates of around 2-3% are not uncommon from such earthquakes. Red Crescent assessment teams have been sent to the scene.

UPDATE:- The Siraj highway is quite close to the epicenter and around 16-22km from Khormoj. 3 people have died, and there are helicopters and assistance being sent to the region. In addition, many landslides have been seen.

UPDATE:- The earthquake has occurred near the Borozjan fault, near a salt dome. There appears to be a town of around 2000 people from satellite images that is close to the earthquake epicenter. Good news is that it is further from Khormoj than first expected from the Iran epicenter.

UPDATE:- Finally news, from the earthquake epicenter where a M6.1 earthquake (local magnitude by IIEES, Iran) – there has been damage reported in Kaki County. In addition, there are scattered reports of possible casualties.

UPDATE:- It is generally bad news in Iran as there are no reports from ISNA, IRNA or Fars News currently on the earthquake. All major agencies have given a shallow 6.2 to 6.3 earthquake (GEOFON, USGS and EMSC). It is expected however that the earthquake may be slightly deeper than first thought which may reduce fatalities. Iran has a very low Q value, meaning that generally earthquake waves reduce in energy (attenuate) faster with distance.

UPDATE:- Many towers have been evacuated across Dubai and in the Middle East given the light shaking. The area of main concern however is the epicentral region. Bushehr at 90km from the epicenter should have been spared major damage, but the closer towns probably not.

UPDATE:- A M5.4 aftershock has also occurred, which will have added to the possible damage.

UPDATE:- There are approximately 3000 people living in the intensity 8 shaking zone according to the USGS PAGER model and 15000 people in the intensity 7 shaking zone. Khvormuj is a city in and capital of Dashti County, Bushehr Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 31,667, in 6,966 families. It is around 25km away from the epicenter.

A strong earthquake has been felt across the region. Magnitude 6.2 in southern Iran can often cause major damage especially when at a shallow depth. It is worth remembering that the 2003 Bam earthquake had a magnitude around 6.5, and caused around 25,000 deaths.

A M6 earthquake struck the same region of Khormoj in 1976 on the 22nd of April causing some damage but no fatalities.

It has been felt intensity IV in Dubai (probably long period waves in a high building).

This current earthquake has been felt in Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Abu Dhabi - 10th floor Offices building. Emergency evacuation apply. Musherib - I was in my flat on the 5th floor of a 9 story apartment and felt like I was swaying. Grabbed my bag and shoe and headed down the stairs to the street. The guy on the ground floor didn't feel it. Ajman - Felt it in the 19th floor it was swinging. Abu Dhabi - I suddenly felt dizzy and sick and realized it's not only me. The whole office on 13 th floor HQ building felt it. Really strong and scary. Doha - 5th floor office and chair moved side to side for about 5 seconds. Evacuated as a precaution. Abu Dhabi - I was watching TV. Suddenly a very strong movement!

Kuwait - Felt my apartment shaking for a few seconds. Dubai - Minor tremor. Kuwait - Slight shaking! Dubai, UAE - Very minor shaking of building, lasted a few minutes! sharjah - just felt a slight swing on the top floor Jubail, Saudi Arabia - Felt table moving for 2 seconds Dubai - Building 0n 8th Floor light swaying Abu Dhabi - Lasted for 6 seconds. Dhahran - Building wobbled a little for less than 10 seconds. doha - I was in a tall building near Corniche Doha - Bed moved a few centimeters for about half a minute. Doha - Felt for about 15 seconds. Quite noticeable shake. People from all the nearby buildings ran down through the emergency exits. Doha (Qatar) - minor shaking of tall buildings. Immediately apparent to all occupants Dubai - Pool water swayed out of the roof top pool on 55th floor. Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia - Our office building shook for about 30 seconds around 3:07PM (Local Time: GMT+3) . The building was evacuated within minutes. Things returned to normal now. manama. - I felt like drowzy . I knew it is an earthquake . I did not enter my building. Al-Khobar - I felt dizzy for a few seconds when the quake hit. A few minutes later I got a phone call from my friend saying that an earthquake had hit our area. But he didn't feel it as he was not in a building. Dubai - On 25th floor of building, weak shaking. Al Khobar - Our office building started swaying. We sustained cracks and falling plaster. It was at least 20 seconds. manama, bahrain - Am resting lying on my bed when I felt its like shaking...ignored it 'coz I know there's no faultline in M.E. but doubted when the shake continues for 5 seconds or so..... Hawalli, Kuwait - We had the frames on wall shaking in our office and all employees felt it. Dubai - Felt light swaying from 25th floor doha Al-sadd - everyone in the road light shaking Dhahran, Saudi Arabia - Was working at my desk in a 13 story building when a slow back-and-forth movement started. It lasted less than 30 seconds. Salmiya, Kuwait - We felt it from the 8th floor of our office building around 2.55 pm Kuwait time and lasted about two minutes. It was mild but caused dizziness. Our office building was shaking for about 20 seconds. Fire marshalls of the building chose to evacuate all staff. Everyone stayed out for some 10 minutes before resuming the daily activities. I've heard also from our driver that in Seef Area, people were going out of the building beacuse it's shaking. Doha - 8th floor in 14 floor building, felt strong moving for about 15-20 seconds at 14:53 local time, evacuation of building al khobar - i was on the phone trying to get the confirmation for the reservation i made for our guests when i felt the ground shaking. at first i was in doubt, so i had to check if my office mate felt the "shake" also. while i was talking to him ( which lasted for 10 seconds at least)it was still shaking, so he immediately ran outside to check if everyones left and he came back running telling everyone to vacate the building.. i had to go by stairs from 8th floor to ground and could still feel the "shake" Kuwait - Hawalli - It was more or less as a wave and lasted for not less than 2 minutes. sharjah - me and my friends were sitting in the drawing room when we felt lightes and sofas moving horizantly... Bahrain - Diplomatic Area - We heard very low sound of breaking or crashing we thought that that the wall is making the sound and suddenly felt dizzy and we noticed that the building was moving Doha Qatar - It was like being on a boat for about 3 seconds, swaying and like I was about to faint. Al Khobar ( Khobar ) - We were at the fifth floor. We saw every things shaking and we ran down. Al Sadd, Doha, Qatar - I felt dizzy and nausea. We evacuated the building for safety precautions. Dhahran - I was at my computer and suddenly felt sick. The feeling lasted between 3 - 7 seconds but left me feeling unwell. A lady 5 meters away from me didn't feel anything but everybody else in my area felt it. We weren't sure it was a quake because nothing fell but you could definitely feel swaying. Not pleasant at all! Dammam. KSA - I JUST FINISHED MY MEAL AND FELT AS IF MY HEAD IS WHIZZING AND I AM GOING TO LOOSE BALANCE WHILST I AM STILL SITTING ON MY DINING CHAIR. THEN MY FAMILY MEMBERS ALSO HAVE SIMILAR EXPERIENCE WITH THINGS SUPPOSED TO BE SHAKING. MAY ALLAH HAVE MERCY ON US. Doha - 45th floor in Doha. Building was shaking and creaking for more than a minute. Building evacuated. Dubai - On 24th floor silver tower, weak shaking but felt dizzy. abu dhabi - i was in bed, i feel little shake in my bed, i thought its normal, then i believe it Dubai - Building shook Doha - Vibration felt at 11.50UTC, lights swinging, building cracking, I almost falled down emergency evacuation at 12.50UTC. Abudhabi, Airport road - i felt shaking my building slowly, i coudlnt recognize it cus i never thought such thing would occur! but it was scary! it was really shaking, my whole family just got outta the building! Salmiya, Kuwait - We've felt our office building shaking for about 10 seconds. Iran, Kangan - We were in the meeting in Kangan PH.12 Gas Project. the building shake strongly and the mountain was full of dust. Bahrain - I felt shaking and went out of the building, Bahrain Abu dhabi electra st - I was sitting then suddenly i felt like someone was slightly swaying me. I got a bit dizzy. Doha - ഇവിടെ ഒന്നും ഇല്ല ഭൂമി കുലുങ്ങിയില്ല Doha - At my office and was reading the excel sheet and theought I am feeling dizzy, then my mate went the building is moving, we ran our down the stairs and as we were the evacuation alarm sounded too, no damage or injuries but offices are closed Hidd - I felt like I was swinging in the chair in my office! Abudhabi, United Arab Emirates - I felt my laptop shaking on my lap slightly. I thought I was imagining it until my friends said that they felt it too. doha - I felt the Iran Bank building in bank street doha shaking, I and all my colleagues got away soon out of that building Doha, Qatar - In office on 40th floor, building started to sway and shake. Having been living in Tokyo, I recognised it as an earthquake. Waited for it to stop then started to evacuate. Aftershock felt some minutes later NSH Tower Khobar - My office at 12th floor was shaking. I felt that it was me feeling it when I came out of my office everyone were running. Doha - Was on the 18th floor of an office building, felt the movement of the building and hurried out. Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia - Doors were shaking, chandelier was swaying, water in glasses was sloshing. I felt like I was moving back and forth while seated on a sofa. Sharjah 13th floor - I was at working place and felt slight movement of my table and chair. Doha - Heard some noise from the ceiling, didn't feel floor shaking. I live on the 8th floor. Saar, Bahrain - My mother felt shaking, nobody else did, and after a few seconds glasses of water started shaking and the TV shook slightly. Abu Dhabi - 24th floor of our building, by the swimming pool, felt dizzy and sick. The whole building was moving. In our flat on 20th floor the doors were moving. Doha - West Bay area, 15th floor, standing in one of the building's two cores. Prolonged swaying (around 1-0.5Hz) felt for 20-30 seconds. A number of us though it was a dizzy spell. Doha, qatar - Lasted about 3-4 minutes. We all thought our chairs were broken initially. Staff felt dizzy and nauseated. Bahrain, UmalHassam - Felt our building shake and had to run out with my son for safety. Al Gosaibi Hotel Al Khobar - I was in 4th Floor, working on laptop, I thought my Sugar level went down, Oops! its Quake, this is fifth time in my life, Al-Kohbar, Raka - Al-Khobar(Raka Auto moto) SLFE building evacuated on Tuesday 9th of April due to the earthquake.around 3:00 Pm Dubai - Almost the entire 10th floor office felt it. Lasted a good few seconds. Thought I was just dizzy until I realized everybody in the office felt the same way. Outside, people didn't seem to realize a thing!

Dubai - Felt light tremors at around 4.05 pm. Sharjah - I felt like blood gushing to my brain. Abudhabi , TCA - Felt mild shaking when I was sitting in my flat in wonder land building at 12th floor. Kuwait City - On the 12th floor, felt a gentle swaying for 30-60 secs. Curtains moving. Multiple times since then too.
