Update 18/05 – 15:30 UTC :
Strong aftershock in Azerbaijan
Probably the second strongest aftershock so far after the M5.7 mainshock on May 7, 2012. Epicenter was also this time very close to Zagatala. The earthquake was felt as far as Tbilissi, Georgia.  We dot expect this aftershock to be very damaging, but minor damage on top of the already damaged houses is a real possibility. At Earthquake-Report.com, we are once again irritated that almost nobody in the world has reported about this earthquake. 1 house cracked and a fallen chimney in a western capital seems to have more value than thousands of damaged houses in Azerbaijan. Selective reporting ? We have witnessed this situation over and over again and sometimes we feel the need to repeat it.

Update 10/05 – 08:59 UTC :
- Minister of Emergency Situations Kamaladdin Heydarov said to journalists on Thursday that the amount of money needed to repair and rebuild the damages communities may be higher than initially expected. If more money is needed, he said, more money will be reserved to accomplish this task.
- The number of earlier reported damaged constructions has increased considerably to 3123 (approx. 3000 houses and 123 state buildings like schools, social services etc). The assessment is continuing and the final outcome maybe even higher. A final count is expected within 3 or 4 days.
- Watching the degree of destruction in the villages, Earthquake-Report.com calls it a miracle that nobody was killed during this earthquake (although 1 newspaper was mentioning this without specifying any details). The number of injured is also very limited as we have counted 35 injured in total, but nobody serious. The most suitable explanation for the limited injured is that the earthquake occurred during the late morning hours when people are out of their houses.
- Medical staff and rescue teams are helping in the tented camps and are working in shifts to be present at all times.

Update 09/05 – 21:20 UTC :
- President Aliyev has visited today the earthquake damaged area. He met and talked with the homeless people. President Aliyev reiterated the relief effort of 20 million new Manats (24.5 million USD) in the initial phase in 2012, and the government has promised to rebuild and repair the area.
- The emergency services have started today with the repair and reconstruction of the hardest hit areas.
- Tents were distributed in the following villages : Zaqatala, Gözbarax, Zəyəm, Qımır, Çobankol, Bazar,  Qax, Güllü, Tasmalı, Ləkid, Zərnə and Lələpaşa.

A US person with friends in Azerbaijan reports :
The epicenter was in our close friends hometown- where her family still lives.  She went to visit yesterday and said that everything is destroyed.  Emergency services came, set up tents- and then left.  She wonders if they will do anything else, because they are only a village. Maybe only a village- but to the families there, this is everything.

Important Update 08/05 – 16:05 UTC :
- The Zaqatala district emergency commission chairman Mr. Elman Ramazanow has given more precise numbers on the damage of the double earthquake and aftershocks.  This is an intermediate report with data collected in more than 24 hours. Based on the limited area of the damage and our experience following earthquake events, we assume that these numbers may only increase slightly
- 274 houses, stables and other constructions have collapsed
- 2,052 houses have slight damage (cracks, partially collapsed walls etc)
- 100 social facilities  are showing cracks
- the emergency relief devision of the government has erected 500 tents  in a number of hard hit villages and 1,050 families have been allocated to these tenting camps. Another 500 tents will be erected today, which bring the total to 1,000.
- 1,276 families found temporarily shelter in the houses of relatives
- The central government of Azerbaijan has reserved 20 million Manat (24.5 million US$) for reconstruction aid

Update 08/05 – 13:12 UTC :
- some villages in the direct earthquake area remain without electricity
- government officials have told the press that rebuilding and repair of the damaged houses will start as soon as tomorrow

Update 08/05 – 08:47 UTC : The map below  gives an overview of both epicenters (M5.6 initial earthquake and M5.5 aftershock). The epicenters are the yellow bullets. The red bullets are the hardest hit localities (ie Muxax, Zəyəm, Çobankol, Bazar, Gözbarax). Most severely damaged villages are located in the foothills of the mountains. Zaqatala is in the upper left corner of the map.

Update 08/05 – 07:24 UTC :
- Tents had to be erected as people cannot enter their damaged houses.  More than 300 people have been given a tent for this reason.
- It is currently raining very heavy in the earthquake area, which is an additional burden for SAR and relief personnel.  A lot of people who did fear aftershocks have spend the night in open air (Min. temperatures are about 10°C).
- Official communication goes by the Ministry of Emergencies led by Mr. Heydarov.  There are no official reports since yesterday noon about the number of hospitalized. Mr. Heydarov is currently visiting the earthquake area again and a new official press report can be expected soon.
- 35 people have been treated for minor injuries in hospitals and polyclinics and have been send home after receiving the proper treatment.
- Most of the damage was inflicted in approx. 20 villages in the Zaqatala district including Muxa, Zayam, Cobankol, Qımır, Mamrıx and Gozbarax
- Schools in the area have been closed until further notice.
- About 20 weaker aftershocks have been recorded in between midnight and 08:00 AM today.
- At the end of the month, the Eurovision songfestival will be held in Baku, the capital. The festival is extremely important for this country and the leaders as well as the population are proud to be the host. Azerbaijan did won the contest last year.  Baku is far away from the present earthquake epicenter and there is no reason to believe that any related strong earthquake will take place in this area, however it has to be said that also Baku is located in a greater fault area. On November 25, 2000 a Ms7.0 earthquake left 26 people dead . the epicenter of that quake was located 25 km to the South South East of Baku in the Caspian sea. 80 buildings were severely damaged. As a result of this earthquake, the Azeri authorities only allow new constructed buildings to have 9 floors.

Update 08/05 – 06:18 UTC :
- The village of Aliabad has been severely damaged. A lot of people in the most hit villages have spend the night in tents.

Update 17:34 UTC : 35 minutes ago a new M4.9 moderate aftershock struck the area. This is the 3th strongest today.

Update 17:28 UTC : The authorities have decided to supply tents to the homeless in Zaqatala, probably too late as the night has almost fallen.

Update 17:13 UTC : The damage and destruction are looking to be bigger than previously reported. In Zaqatala, at least 60 houses are seriously damaged. Most of them have collapsed walls. People are too afraid to return to their houses and will probably spend the night in the streets or in the fields.  We have heard no news of tents to give shelter to those living in the damaged houses or those wanting to stay away from their house. Most older buildings in the area are made of brick and are not earthquake resistant which increases the chance of damage or even destruction. Update 16:53 UTC : 2 people have been rescued by SAR teams from a seriously damaged  house in Gulbarax, this after the latest strong aftershock. Some injured have been taken for treatment to hospitals, but none of them was seriously injured. The strong aftershock is responsible for damage to some buildings in Zaqatala (Zagatala).

Update 15:20 UTC : Aftershocks are continuing to strike the area. Most of these aftershocks are only felt in the direct area of the epicenter. The weather outlook in the area can be called mixed. Temperatures are 11 (min) to 222 (max), but rain has been forecast for today and tomorrow.

This morning earthquake damage : 3 villages were the hardest hit with many older houses seriously damaged. The 3 villages are all located in the Zagatala area. From earlier reports we know that they are : Azar, Zayam and Gymyr. Luckily no fatalities though.

Update 15:16 UTC : Azerbaijan media are talking about a M5.3 earthquake with an intensity of MMI 6 to 6.5 (local scale which is comparable with the MMI scale). Both USGS and EMSC are reporting a 5.5 or 5.6 earthquake at a depth of approx. 11 km. Both agencies are locating the epicenter at 10 km from Zagatala versus 17 km this morning. Reports from our readers living in the greater earthquake area are somewhat conflicting. Some are talking about a short shaking which was considerably weaker than this morning, others are reporting higher “Felt it” values. We reiterate that Zagatala is an important regional city with 18,277 inhabitants.  A gas pipeline is crossing the area.

Update 15:02 UTC : 68,000 people are reported to have experienced a very strong shaking.  Earthquake-report.com does not think on many injured or fatalities because most people will have been staying on the streets as the area has been struck by tens of aftershocks since this morning. Potential damage is likely to have happened.
145,000 people will have felt a strong shaking. This mornings earthquake was reported as a max.  MMI VI (strong shaking) versus MMI VII this afternoon. As older houses were already damaged this morning, some unstable walls may have succumbed under the shaking.

Important Update 14:57 UTC : Another powerful earthquake (aftershock) occurred at 14:15 UTC. We are currently collecting more information. This earthquake looks even more dangerous than the first one as the epicenter is closer to Zagatala (preliminary data from USGS).

Update 13:25 UTC : From the time of the mainshock until this update, the epicenter area has been shaken by at least 80 aftershocks, a lot of them only recorded by instruments and not felt by the population.  The south side of the Caucasus ( including the Zagatala area) is known as a seismically active zone. The last massive earthquake in this area dates from 1936 when a Magnitude 7 earthquake struck the area

Update 10:55 UTC : Azerbaijan news agency APA reports that no problem was detected in the delivery of power, water, gas and communication in Zagatala. Roads in or near Zagatala were not disrupted. The International Bus Terminal told that buses move in direction of Zagatala in accordance with the schedule, no closures of any part of the motor way was recorded so far: ‘No problem is observed in arrival and departure of vehicles’.
Nearly 20 persons arrived at the hospital with different injuries, but none of them were operated or placed at the resuscitation ward. They were given first aid and sent home.
We remind our readers that this report focuses on Zagatala, very close to the epicenter, but not above the epicenter. We will need 4 to 8 hours more for a final update of the direct epicenter area.

Update 09:59 UTC :   According to the Seismological Service of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, the Magnitude of the earthquake was 5.7 at a depth of 11 km. Following the same agency, the epicenter was located at 17 km from Zagatala (below also called Zaqatala). The gas pipeline linking Baku – Tbilisi and Ceyhan have not been affected by the earthquake

Update 09:15 UTC : From the Azerbaijani side of the border, there are reports of destroyed houses and at least 15 people have been treated for injuries so far, mainly due to panic while fleeing the houses. The hardest hit villages at the Azerbaijani side are Azar, Zayam and Gymyr

Update 09:06 UTC : Earthquake-Report.com also fears for damage and possibly injuries in the smaller mountain villages of the area, especially rockfall and landslides. These villages are only visited many hours after the earthquake.  Nobody has reported yet on the conditions right at the epicenter, as this area is populated too! It looks like farming soil with a couple of hundred houses (prevailing the preliminary epicenter location is right)

Update 08:43 UTC :  As we have feared, this earthquake tends to be more dangerous than the numbers would make out.  Local Georgia and Azerbaijani press reports are reporting not only damage in houses and schools (merely cracks) but also injured people. In the meantime aftershocks are terrorizing the local Caucasus population with so far at least 3 aftershocks above M4.

Update 07:43 UTC :  Earthquake-Report.com fears that the damage as a result of this earthquake may be bigger than initially expected. In Georgia alone (EMSC and USGS are maintaining the epicenter in Azerbaijan) many houses have slight damage.  We expect more detailed news within 2 to 4 hours.
We will start an in-depth article as the results of this earthquake will be probably beyond the scope of this page.

Update 06:41 UTC :  Russian authorities are reporting a Magnitude of 5.8. The earthquake was also felt in Dagestan . People in the epicenter area have fled on the streets and remain there until further notice out of fear for aftershocks.

Update 05:41 UTC : Following other sources, the epicenter should be at the Georgian side of the border, 1 km from the village of Zemo Kedi and 22 kilometers from the city Dedoplistskaro (Kakheti region). 2 aftershocks are felt so far. The aftershocks are in the 4 to 5 range, enough to frighten the people from the epicenter area even more

154,000 people may have experienced a strong shaking, enough to create a damaging earthquake. Similar magnitude earthquakes had few fatalities, but we would not be surprised that damage is inflicted.
Closest communities are Zaqatala (pop. 18,277) and Cinarly (pop. 6,508).
EMSC reports a Magnitude of 5.5 at a depth of 10 km.
296,000 people have experienced a moderate shaking and nearly 3 million people a light shaking.
Cities who have experienced a strong shaking are : Aliabad (9000 people), Zaqatala (18277 people) and Qax (12000 people).
The area where the earthquake happened was a 3-country area. The epicenter is close to Russia and Georgia. Armenia is at a considerable distance
WAPMERR, an organization specialized in theoretical calculation of possible casualties reports, expects 5 to 40 people to be injured and 0 to 5 people to be killed. WAPMERR’s calculations are based on present and past data.

tbilisi - thank u earthquake. U woke me up this morning .. Coz of u i went to college on time .. Tbilisi - estaba sentada y de repente sentí un temblor, que me ha mareado Sheki, Azerbaijan - Earthquake this morning with house shaking slightly and boards creaking. Another one a few minutes ago which was weaker and very short duration. Tbilisi - 18.30 im Zentrum von Tbilisi in einem altem Haus 3. Beben am heutigen 7.5.2012 Tbilisi, Georgia - The bed and side table shook for a few seconds, enough for my cat and dog who were both fast asleep and usually too lazy to move, to both suddenly jump up from the bed and chair and stand in the middle of the room looking at each other. After 20seconds or so they both resumed their normal position. I also felt a slight tremor yesterday whilst at the market, and one more (very slight) about 30minutes ago. I'm a geography teacher so I'm very interested in earthquakes. Slight crack in house too Tbilisi, Georgia - Moderate shaking indicated Tbilisi - Light shaking indicated

UPDATE 21:30 UTC Saturday -

18 people have been injured , and 45 houses have been destroyed in Abdanan. In other locations, houses have also been destroyed in rural centers. 700 houses in total have been rendered uninhabitable So far no fatalities have been reported but around 3500 people are believed to be homeless due to destroyed houses, with at least 1500 others needing shelter. 50 villages have been 30 to 50% destroyed.

UPDATE 22:30 UTC
- 1500 blankets and 1500 tents are required by victims according to relief staff. 10 ambulances, 120 relief staff have been sent to near Abdanan. According to other reports 45 houses have collapsed or are beyond repair.
- The number of injured has increased to 10.

8 people are reported to be injured and many houses have been damaged
Theoretical calculations from USGS are telling us that about 13,000 people have experienced a strong MMI VI shaking. Nothing special for countries like Chile, but in Iran due to the type of earthquake and the vulnerable house building style, we start

- IEEES is reporting a Ml5.4 and 14km depth. This will most likely be damaging to local villages.

- Amazingly, only 15 damaging earthquakes from CATDAT have been registered since 1900 in this location within 100km radius, and of those this is the highest magnitude.

- This was given an earthquake-report danger rating of RED

Update April 23 – 10:17 UTC
A local Papua newspaper is giving a few more details on the inflicted damage.
- Landslides on the main road of Manokwari towards Ransiki have been cleared by workers
- The damage has occurred in the following villages : Ransiki, Tubou, Hamawi and Nyamtui
- The Pentecostal Church in Ransiki got a lot of damage.
- A bridge in Ransiki had many cracks and newly installed drains collapsed too
This reports mentions a lot of of cracked houses and some of them severely damaged.

Update April 22 – 17:49 UTC
The damage in the Ransiki districts (closest to the epicenter) is a lot bigger than initially expected. Almost all house walls have cracks and many houses were heavily damaged.  The Ransiki mosque was also damaged.
We have no word of serious injuries but people are so afraid for strong aftershocks that they decided to stay overnight in the open air.

Update 11:23 UTC:  It has been reported that the quake caused a bridge connecting the Ransiki-Manokwari to have minor damage. A total of 10 houses damaged moderately, and dozens of others were slightly damaged.

- Update 11:03 UTC
* As usual the local media are always focusing more on the bigger cities in the area, in this case Manokwari. In Manokwari people are saying that the strong shaking only lasted 3 seconds. People rushed out of the buildings. There was no news of any damage or injuries at Manokwari.

- The biggest city in the area is Manokwari who has experienced a strong MMI VI shaking. Manokwari has a population of 53,000 people.

- The fault who generated the earthquake is called “Ransiki fault”.  Both sides of the fault are moving approx. 8.5 mm/year.

- Local BMKG is reporting a Magnitude of 6.8 at a depth of 10 km (bot stronger than reported by USGS)

- Modified Mercalli Shaking Intensities : 4,000 people : Severe VIII shaking, 8,000 people : Very strong VII shaking and 169,000 people VI strong shaking.

- GDACS has calculated that the following locations might get waves of max. 0.2 meter (not a real tsunami but only strong current and waves)  :  Rapaowi, Ransiki, Jali Ali, Sisember and Robookisbia

- 160,000 people are living within a radius of 100 km. The repartition of the population is as follows :
75 km     29000 people;  50 km     16000 people; 20 km     5200 people and 10 km     less than 1000 people
Earthquake-report.com calls an area of 25 km at risk (about 7000 people – number based on GDACS data) for serious damage and injuries.

- Oransbari and Ransiki are 2 villages located in a radius of 25 km around the epicenter. Especially this area will get the greatest shaking impact. Based on satellite images, Ransiki seems to have a STOL airport (short take off and landing)

- The earthquake is somewhat weakened because of an epicenter just out in the sea

- Due to the Magnitude and the close distance to the beach, NOAA has published the following Tsunami statement for the Pacific region :
NO DESTRUCTIVE WIDESPREAD TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS BASED ON HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA.
HOWEVER
EARTHQUAKES OF THIS SIZE SOMETIMES GENERATE LOCAL TSUNAMIS THAT CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS LOCATED WITHIN A HUNDRED KILOMETERS OF THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES  IN THE REGION OF THE EPICENTER SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS POSSIBILITY AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION.

Seismic hazard map of the epicentral area

-The director of Onemi Mr. Bejamin Chacana, has made a summary of this morning’s earthquake. He said that the basis for the preventive evacuation was the seismological report that an intensity of VII was expected. Nearly 13,000 people living along the coast have been asked to evacuate to higher ground.  A special committee has decided to lift the evacuation a little more than 2 hours later. He also said the telecommunications (fixed and mobile) were congested but work again normal 4 hours later. He confirmed the earlier reported fatalities.

- Earthquake-report.com has unfortunately to report that a second person has lost his life as an indirect result of the earthquake. Luis Órdenes Tapia, 59 years old,  was under treatment for a critical cancer. 

- A lot of people are questioning ONEMI for a) calling for an evacuation where the local specialists (SHOA) were reporting NO immediate danger and b) the Magnitude setting vs the Magnitude reported by USGS. Chileans are giving the USGS a lot of value while at the same time underestimating their own seismological agencies. We truly understand that the world is looking almost instantly to the USGS for earthquake data (just like we do too), but contrary to most people in the world earthquake-report.com turns immediately to local agencies to find out which numbers they are reporting. This way, we have noticed that ONEMI Chile should NOT be criticized that much because they are doing a really great job with a lot of skilled people.  Onemi takes NO risk at all if a serious quake happens in a a direct coastal area. Earthquake-Report.com is very sure that even without Onemi telling to evacuate, people living along the coast would AUTO-EVACUATE immediately after a strong VI or VII MMI shaking.

- Update 08:44 UTC : Preventive evacuation has been lifted 3 hours 48 minutes after the mainshock!

- In the video below captured in the CNN studios from Santiago de Chile, we have timed that the strongest shaking went on for about 8 seconds and that the shaking ended after approx. 35 seconds.

- Power is now been restored to 99% of the grid and only the town of Maitencillo in the Vth district has still some areas without power 

- Update 07:57 UTC : 8 aftershocks since the mainshock

- A seismologist from the Universidad de Chile Santiago has declared that today’s earthquake is NOT related with the February 27, 2010 mega-quake.

- 1 indirect death has occurred with the death of a 72 year old man during evacuation in Quintero (probably due to the stress). This earthquake has been labeled CATDAT Orange under the new criteria of indirect deaths.

UPDATE 6.15UTC – Power has been restored in Quintero.

- A slight landslide occurred blocking a road but has now been cleared.

- USGS has increased the magnitude of the quake to Mw6.7 with a depth of 36km. This explains the longer duration and widespread intensity without being extremely damaging.

- Carlos Robles reports (based on local reports) :
* The earthquake caused panic in the capital.
* It was felt from Coquimbo to Bio Bio and lasted some minutes.
* There are electric cuts around the country.

- The long duration of the quake (1 minute reported in Valparaiso by one of our readers) may have reduced the damage due to lower ground motions

- The Video below is from the studios of CNN Chile and shows the kind of shaking the studio had to sustain.  Following ONEMI Chile, the shaking we are seeing on this video is labeled approx. MMI VI (strong shaking).

- Earthquake-Report.com reader message from Valparaiso : No previous sound, It started reaaally strong, right from the beginning, some things fell, the sad thing is telephones lines went down… again.
Once again Earthquake-Report.com requests the authorities to act against Telecommunications companies. Solutions to keep using phones are easy and can mostly be implemented rather fast, but the political will does not exist yet to impose these measures. What has to be done : only allow voice for emergency services and force a “Text messages Only” traffic for all other users.  Nowadays everything is possible and everything goes down, over and over again anywhere in the world. 

- We received also a lot of I Have Felt It reports from the Mendoza, Cordoba aea in Argentina!

- Update 05:23 UTC – ONEMI is still maintaining the “preventive” evacuation order for the coastal areas described below (similar update)

- Chile affected people will not have a quiet night as the many aftershocks will regularly wake them up.

- All local reports are mentioning “NO damage or injuries so far”

- MMI Intensities in Región: Valparaíso – Calera:VII, Casablanca:VII, Hijuelas:VII, La Ligua:VI, Quillota:V, Quilpué :V, San Antonio:V, Santo Domingo:  V, Valparaíso:VII, Villa Alemana :VII
- Región: Metropolitana de Santiago – Melipilla:VI, Peñaflor:VI, San José de Maipo:VI, Santiago:VI, Talagante:VI, Tiltil:VII

- As said earlier in the article, the earthquake is NOT strong enough to generate a tsunami. SHOA, the army division specialized in alerting for Tsunami danger, has reported that the conditions to generate a tsunami are NOT present.

- No historic quakes of this magnitude have caused deaths within the epicentral region, so there is a very minor chance of fatalities.

- USGS states (based on theoretical calculations and historic data) that there is very little chance of major damage or fatalities. Earthquake-report.com expects exactly the same.

- Today’s earthquake is triggered by the collision of the Nazca plate  (Oceanic plate) with the South American plate (continental plate).

- Mostly the epicenters of Chile earthquakes are below the sea floor at a distance of 20 to 30 km from the coast (fault line)

- We want to stress the Chile people are among the best trained people in the world to cope with earthquakes, at least equal or even better than the Japanese.

- As every earthquake is perceived differently, it is impossible to compare numbers. The current epicentral area has had similar quakes than today which were slightly damaging, others with bigger magnitudes have been without damage or injuries.

- While we are writing this article, we are searching locally for more information on the impact of the earthquake

- Update 04:55 UTC : ONEMI has called the people from Tongoy until Constitucion (provinces of Coquimbo until Maule) to evacuate to higher grounds. They are emphasizing that they are maintaining the evacuation order.

- Since the mainshock the area has been hit by 2 M+4 aftershocks

- The seismology department of the Universidad de Chile, Santiago reports a Magnitude of 6.3 at a depth of 31.2 km.

- Until now, our QuakeSOS iPhone application has only received I AM SAFE messages !

- Based on the intensities reported by USGS the shaking must have been stronger than theoretically calculated by them. Just like the expectations of local ONEMI, reported intensities are mounting to VII (very strong shaking)

- James Daniell, the CATDAT earthquake damage specialist says that : It can be expected that there will be minor damage.

- An ER reader from Vina del Mar (close to the epicenter) talks about : Between moderate and strong shaking for more than a minute
A person from Valparaiso writes : second aftershock weaker than the fist aftershock. Guessing second was a 3 first was a 4.3 the actual earthquake was more than a 6.4… maybe it just feels stronger because I am on the 10th floor of a tower… in the big one 2 years ago the shaking was less but I was in Puerto Varas and in a house.

- The Mw7.9 earthquake in 1985 killed 177 and injured 2575 but the effects will not be comparable to this quake.

- Of the 50+ previous CATDAT damaging earthquakes, the closest to this earthquake were the M6.7 earthquake around 20km away from this quake which only caused minor damage.

- Chile houses have a very good earthquake resistance

- The 1906 earthquake was M8.5 and killed 3882 people,  but was offshore (also far bigger than todays earthquake.

- The major Chile earthquake of 1906 and 1985 were within a radius of 100km.

- Historically, there have been at least 50 damaging earthquakes within a 100km radius of the epicenter

- Strongest intensities have been experienced in Titil and Rancagua following ONEMI Chile (MMI VII = very strong shaking)

- ONEMI Chile is calling the earthquake one of Mayor Intensidad (great intensity).

- 532,000 people will have experienced a strong shaking and nearly a million people a moderate shaking. 8 million people a light shaking

- The epicenter may be positioned in the sea or just below land

- The earthquake struck on the coastal strip 42 km to the north of Valparaiso and 112 km from the Capital Santiago

Mendoza, Argentina - Estaba en la cama y comencé a sentir un ruido extraño x alrededor d 1 min, luego comenzó el movimiento pero moderado x otro minuto, y luego paró. No pasó desapercibido.. muy feo.. Valparaiso Chile - second aftershock weaker than the fist aftershock. Guessing second was a 3 first was a 4.3 the actual earthquake was more than a 6.4... maybe it just feels stronger because I am on the 10th floor of a tower... in the big one 2 years ago the shaking was less but I was in Puerto Varas and in a house. Santiago, Chile - I am at the Radisson Hotel. The paintings started shaking and the ground as well. Las Condes - Santiago - horizontal moving - more than a minute Mendoza, Argentina - I was awake anyway, but my husband was awoken from sleep. The glass doors to the terrace shook very loudly and the bed noticeably moved. I unlocked the door in case we had to leave. I could hear other people in the hostel unlocking theirs too. The shaking was mild at first but got stronger and lasted maybe 30-40 seconds. Las Condes - Santiago - Weak shaking indicated Córdoba, Argentina - I was in my bed then I felt a light swinging motion and noticed the dream-catcher attacked to the ceiling above my bed was also swaying. I was in a a 13-story apartment building on the 6th floor in Cordoba, Argentina. Santiago, Chili - We woke up due to strong shaking. The shaking felt like the earthquake of feb. 2010. we heard some objects fell and break. Telephones went down inmediately, but electricity keeps working. Valparaiso - No previous sound, It started reaaally strong, right from the beggining, some things fell, the sad thing is telephones lines went down... again Santiago - Estou no hotel Cesar Busness. Primeira vez que vive esta experiencia. Fiquei bastante preocupada, vizinhos de quarto me tranquilizaram. Las Condes, Santiago - No horizontal shaking. Strong shaking and wake us up. Last longer than last time (march -12) about one minute. We are on the fifth floor and we felt hard shaking and end of the shaking our building start to wave. CHILE - it was very long it started and i was like ok just a tremor and than ok small qauke it will over soon then i was like ok time to go i ran out the house family was freaked people were running in the streets its crazy because a scientist predicted this quake my friends are in vina and they said it was awful and several weeks ago a 7.1 that lasted for minutes they say its the weapon designed by usa called the haarp a meteor or solar flares i dont but i dont do quakes im ready to go back to md Santiago - Strong shaking indicated

Strong aftershock in Sulawesi, Indonesia
Although the 5.5 Magnitude can be considered as strong in our terms, the depth is weakening the impact and we expect no serious damage or injuries . People in Sulawesi are experiencing a lot of earthquakes and their houses are build from material (mostly wood and bamboo) which is very efficient against earthquakes. Brick and concrete are mostly used in bigger cities only.  USGS expects 1000 people to have experienced a MMI VI strong shaking. 43,000 people a moderate shaking and 562,000 people a light shaking. The epicenter area is the same then last week Mw5.8 earthquake. Click here for our in-depth article. During this Mw5.8 earthquake, 51 houses were damaged and 2 people injured. Hypocenter depth was reported as 9.9 km versus 40 km today, a lot deeper and thus less dangerous.
Update : BMKG, the local Indonesian seismological agency reports a Magnitude of 5.3 at a depth of 10 km. The epicenter is following BMKG located offshore, a whole lot of difference. We trust BMKG as a very good seismological agency and in this case working with their own instruments (closest to the epicenter). See also our daily report of May 1

UPDATE 16:30UTC: At least 16 houses have been damaged, 35 others have minor damage, and two people who were in Parliament House of the Morowali District, Central Sulawesi were injured by the earthquake that struck the area.

“We still continue to record the number of casualties and damaged buildings,” said Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Morowali Suhirman who called from Palu on her cell phone to news services in Indonesia.

According to him, the parliament building of Morowali suffered damage estimated at 35%. “There is no wall that collapsed, but cracks everywhere,” he said.

It is likely that the damage will exceed that of the M8.6 earthquake a week ago.

While the houses are severely damaged and collapsed generally cracked. Damaged buildings, mostly owned by people living in the District Bungku Central and Eastern Bungku.

This earthquake has been labelled CATDAT Orange.

UPDATE 05:00UTC: Our main concerns are still closer to the epicentre where we have no word yet.

Good news from a large town a moderate distance from the epicenter. Students taking their exams at SMA Negeri 1 Malili (80km away from the epicentre) rushed outside, with no injuries, but there appears to be no damage – therefore they have continued their exams.

UPDATE 03:30UTC: No news from the epicentral region as yet. Indonesian news services are repeating the epicentral location with no other information. We are currently trying to get news from the epicenter given the severity of the 15.02.2011 quake.

UPDATE 03:10UTC: There are numerous mines in the area. Three hydrodams power the residential area and the power was out for almost 48 hours in the last event in the region.

UPDATE 03:00UTC: BMKG has confirmed the severity of the earthquake with a Ml5.7 at 10km.

An earthquake in approximately the same location of Mw6.1 hit last year on the 15th February 2011, with damaging results. Although there were no casualties, some houses collapsed and many cracked.

“The Indonesian news channel Tempo reported that hundreds of people ran to the higher grounds of the Sorowako airport when the earthquake struck yesterday evening (local time) fearing for a lake tsunami. The local people told reporters that the shaking lasted for approx. 1 minute. Most people were enjoying dinner when the shaking started.
So far no casualties were reported. However, a dock on Lake Towuti vanished (probably by the shaking).
The first damage inspection survey in the greater epicenter area revealed that hundreds of houses are left with cracks in the wall, many school buildings area also damaged.
Some houses are reported collapsed in the Malili district, approx. 30 km from Sorowako.
Sorowako residents are still scared. Officials did inform local people not to believe in the rumors of a potential lake tsunami.”

The earthquake was felt strongly in the epicentral region. Shakemaps are expecting a VII intensity, however from BMKG only intensity V.

The April 11, 2012, M8.6 and M8.2 earthquakes off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, occurred as a result of strike-slip faulting within the oceanic lithosphere of the Indo-Australia plate. The quakes were located respectively 100 km and 200 km to the southwest of the major subduction zone that defines the plate boundary between the India/Australia and Sunda plates offshore Sumatra. At this location, the India/Australia plates move north-northeast with respect to the Sunda plate at a velocity of approximately 52 mm/yr.

Focal Mechanism of the Mw8.6 earthquake

Large strike-slip earthquakes are not unprecedented in the diffuse boundary region separating the India and Australia plates, southwest of the Sumatra subduction zone. Since the massive M 9.1 earthquake that ruptured a 1300 km long segment of the Sumatran mega-thrust plate boundary in December of 2004, three earlier large strike-slip events had occurred within 50 km of the first large April 11, 2012 event. These earthquakes occurred on April 19 2006 (Mw6.2), October 4 2007 (Mw6.2) and January 10, 2012 (Mw7.2).

The focal-mechanisms of the three earlier earthquakes and the two great earthquakes of April 11, 2012, are consistent in implying that each earthquake could have occurred as the result of left-lateral slip on a north-northeast striking fault or right-lateral slip on a west-northwest striking fault. The two different orientations of strike-slip faulting are both possible under the same tectonic stress field; perpendicular strike-slip faults that are both compatible with the same stress field are called “conjugate faults”.
Possibly faults of both orientation have been involved in the recent earthquake activity.

Felt in much of Sumatra, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanki. Also felt in many countries as far out as Male, Maldives to the west,  Dacca, Bangladesh; Calcutta, India; Rangoon, Myanmar; Bangkok, Thailand and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to the north.

Indonesian authorities have reported that finally 10 Indonesians died, all of them indirect (heart attacks, jumping in panic out of a tree, etc)

* 50 inmates from the Sigli state prison have not returned after the gates have been opened by the prison management. On the outside cries that the water was rising, state prison director decided to open the gate. It must have been done in chaos as only 13 of the 63 inmates have returned to the prison. The other 50 are on the run with the police coming after them.

* Indonesian authorities have reported that 5 people have been killed by the earthquake on the island of Sumatra. 7 people have been reported injured (1 child is critically injured when she jumped in panic out of a tree). 3 people died of a heart attack. Massive earthquakes have a very emotional impact on Indonesians since in 2004 so many people were killed by a tsunami in the same area as yesterday’s earthquakes. The killed and injured reported so far are indirect fatalities which are related to the earthquake.
* The main airport of Simeulue island (island closest to the epicenter) was closed.  Simeulue had no power and communications were disturbed (unbelievable in earthquake-report.com terms ! – One should think that after the 2004 tsunami and devastating earthquake, authorities should have a viable system in place to at least reach strategic locations like the main Simeulue airport).
- Based on the injured and killed Sumatrans, this earthquake will be labeled CATDAT ORANGE

- On our Major daily earthquakes list from April 11, you can see an impressive list of aftershocks.  The list is especially long because we are publishing the data of EMSC, GFZ and USGS.

The aftershocks are continuously hitting th sea floor. The image below shows the epicenters of the many aftershocks. The red square is the latest one and the square with a white arrow is the mainshock of 8.6. The area where the aftershocks have occurred is approx. 1000 square kilometer? Since the mainshock we have counted 31 M+5 aftershocks. We expect the aftershocks to gradually decrease in strength but at the same time we also expect some very strong ones to happen now and then. Let’s hope that the whole area (especially the Burma Plate and the Sumatra fault) will remain calm.

Indonesia is checking for damage and casualties but remarkably, no such reports had been received for several hours after the quakes, including in Aceh province, the closest province and the area decimated by the disaster eight years ago. Many people are frightened for further tremors. People want to stay alert because of the fear that more quakes are coming.

The small wave caused $220,000 (2 billion rupiah) damage (estimated) to a bridge and a house. Damage to the bridge was in Bubon Arongan

Also Indonesia has now lifted the tsunami alert.  We had to wait several minutes to reach the BMKG website, as we were ourselves victims of saturated servers,  we feel pity with the Indonesian seismologists.
Billions of dollars are paid to cover earthquake and tsunami insurances but some seed money to strengthen specialist sites like the seismological agencies and our site are seemingly too much for the insurance companies.  Saturated servers are a common problem for event driven websites like earthquake-report.com

So why was this earthquake the largest non-damaging earthquake ever measured?
a) It occurred 400km+ offshore, thus the earthquake shaking only achieved a maximum intensity of around 5.5-6 in the closest points to land, causing no discernable damage.
b) the earthquake, unlike other major M8+ earthquakes, was a strike-slip earthquake, where plates slide past one another, and not upwards or downwards. Therefore, there was not much offset on either side of the fault and thus the water volume was not significantly displaced and therefore caused NO MAJOR TSUNAMI (highest was at Meulaboh with 1.05m)
c)13 other earthquakes over Mw8 since 1900 have caused no damage, however, the Mw8.6 was the highest by Mw0.4 (around 3 times the ground motion and 7 times more energy than ever before to cause no damage!!!!)
The Mw8.2 earthquake which occurred a couple of hours later was the 3rd largest earthquake recorded to cause no damage.

In one of the many experience reports, a person from Banda Aceh wrote earthquake-report.com : hard too remain standing, iMac in the office hopping madly all over the desk, people panicking and leaving the city because of tsunami warnings

- So far we there were 23 M5+ aftershocks after the mainshock. 2 of the aftershocks were even bigger than M6

We got a message on our computer for Maldives touroperator IMPEX Holydays. The touroperator is telling his client travel agencies soon after the earthquake what the situation was at the Maldives. This is truly an ‘example of how today’s communication has to work. Congratulations to Impex Holidays.

Greetings from Maldives.
We wish to inform all our partners the situation in Maldives is calm although we slightly felt the 8.6 magnitude earth quake which hit Aceh, Indonesia this afternoon.
As of now, 1725 hrs local Maldives time the authorities have extended the tsunami alert time till 1930 hrs due to the second after shock quake.
All inhabited islands as well as the resort islands are on full alert, although sources have informed that the chances of a tsunami is unlikely.
e wish all tourists in Maldives well and pray that we will be safe.”

- Meulaboh (Northern Sumatra)  has recorded waves up to 1.06m
- The second fault solution has been confirmed as a strike-slip  – meaning little chance of tsunami. Probably only minor given the slight dip.
This is the largest non-damaging earthquake for a long time of this magnitude.

- The epicenter of the earthquake is located about 100 km to the west of the subduction fault line in the Oceanic part of the Indian plate and not in the direct subduction zone of the plates. The subduction zone is far more dangerous than stress in the oceanic plate itself.  The actual greater area is the intersection in between the Indian Plate, the Australian plate and the Burma plate.

- A NOAA employee just told CNN that the max. water level change which has been measured so far was 1 meter, which confirms our earlier expectation that due to the type of the 1th earthquake (strike/slip) the impact would be limited.

- We will still have to wait for the earthquake data of the second massive earthquake.  The mechanism (type of earthquake) is not necessarily the same for both earthquakes

- Aftershocks are continuing to hit the epicentral area

- It is really VERY GOOD news that the coast in Northern Sumatra has not reported any serious damage or injuries. This coast is the nearest to the epicenter.

- Power if off at Banda Aceh
- Why is it far too early to give the final “safe” message ? Because Indonesia and also locations like the Andaman Islands have a lot of smaller islands and every coastal area can react differently to incoming waves.

- The first 8.6-magnitude quake off Aceh province, hours earlier, spawned a wave around 80cm high but caused no serious damage. We will have to wait anxiously whether the second earthquake hasn’t generated higher destructive ways, probably not but far too early to say so.

- Another area which was also very hard hit in 2004 is India’s Andaman Islands. No news so far from that area of the world, but we will follow news from the Andaman Islands too

- As said before the current earthquakes have only limited similarities with the destructive 2004 earthquake and tsunami. The main movement, as presently known, was lateral versus up and down during the 2004 earthquake. That earthquake was also more powerful.

- People is Simeulue Island (closest to the epicenter) have now been reporting that the water on the beaches was treating about 10 meters (must have been generated by the second quake). A receding ocean can be the sign of an upcoming tsunami but often the receding is everything what happens too.  So, we will have to wait for more news. This may have been caused by another earthquake wave propagation after the second earthquake

- Due to the many sometimes violent aftershocks, the tsunami watches will bot be lifted and people have to stay on higher ground

- The second massive quake has been decreased to 8.2 by USGS, it has to be seen as a massive aftershock

- A NEW POWERFUL M 8.6 earthquake occurred at this time in the almost same epicenter area!

- It is still too early to tell whether there was no tsunami at all as reports are mixed. Depending on the propagation of the wave and the coastal relief, places where a tsunami occurs are not necessarily the same.

- Most aftershocks have an epicenter on a safe distance out of the Sumatra coast
- At this moment we can only tell that a real destructive tsunami has not yet occurred as far as we know. Additionally the epicenter is too far out of the coast to be shaking damaging. Light damage is still possible of course as the highest expected shaking is still a strong MMI VI shaking.

- People in the most dangerous area are well prepared these days and were also immediately alarmed to seek higher ground

- a number of hospitals in Banda Aceh have been evacuated. Patients have been brought to higher grounds

- Many (powerful) aftershocks have occurred since the mainshock
- India’s tsunami warning center said waves measuring up to 6 meters were expected along parts of its eastern coast

- Very good news comes from Indonesia :  Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency says no detection of low tide that would indicate tsunami in Aceh (Reuters twitter)

- seismologists are reporting the the earthquake was from another type than the 2004 one. The thrust force was far less this time than in 2004. Thrust force is mainly generating tsunamis like what was the case in Japan

- As far as we know now – the closest shores (Northern Sumatra) has not yet experienced any important level change

- British Prime Minister Mr Cameron is visiting the country’s capital, Jakarta, which is 1,600 miles south-east of the province and on a different island, Java. He said he was ‘hugely concerned and ready to help’. There were reports of the water level dropping in the Thai resort of Phuket – a sign that the sea is drawing back in preparation to launch an enormous wave.

- Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency is sending a rescue team to Aceh, after a massive 8.7 magnitude quake on Wednesday and tsunami warning knocked out the province’s electricity and send locals scrambling for higher ground.

Magnitude and depth are the main parameters of an earthquake.  The combination of both and the area where they are occurring will determine whether they are dangerous or not.

Magnitude : at Earthquake-Report.com we are using values starting at 5.5 as potentially dangerous in locations with an historic proved high ground acceleration. In subduction zones (mostly volcanic zones like the Ring of Fire countries) we are especially alerted from 6.0.

Depth : If the depth of an hypocenter or focal depth (location in the underground where the rupture takes place)  is less than 20 km, below a densely populated area and taking into account the above Magnitude description elements, we are almost certainly starting up an in-depth article as we consider these kind of earthquakes as “moderately to even very dangerous”.

Due to a server crash at our hosting company (JustHost shared hosting server), the earthquake database was down for approx. 3 days. Both, “earthquake experiences” as well as “earthquake notifications” were based on this system. – As we are a non-profit organization working on an extremely limited budget, we have unfortunately not the funds to hire redundant dedicated servers (we hope that soon a good hearted funding partner will show up).  Since we do not trust the former hosting company anymore (3 days down without serious communication), we have installed a backup on an account of a new provider. Lets hope that this provider will meet our requirements.  We are aware of some other problems we have with the hourly and daily frequencies and will try to solve them later today.  From now on, the mails will be delivered by MySMTP.eu. This company is a specialized email sender and is a goodwill partner of earthquake-report.com.  We apologize once more for the interruption in our Earthquake notifications.

April 18-19-20
- Due to our database server breakdown, we were unable to send email notifications to our subscribers. We have the database running again via a backup and on another server. We still need to deploy a number of scripts and will be able to restart sending notification from April 20 PM. We truly apologize for what happened.

The March 20, 2012 earthquake occurred as a result of thrust-faulting on or near the plate boundary interface between the Cocos and North America plates. The focal mechanism and depth of the earthquake are consistent with its occurrence on the subduction zone interface between these plates, approximately 100 km northeast of the Middle America Trench, where the Cocos plate begins its descent into the mantle beneath Mexico. In the region of this earthquake, the Cocos plate moves approximately northeastwards at a rate of 60 mm/yr.

Historically, there have been several significant earthquakes along the southern coast of Mexico. In 1932, a magnitude 8.4 thrust earthquake struck in the region of Jalisco, several hundred kilometers to the northwest of today’s event.

On October 9, 1995 a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck in the Colima-Jalisco region, killing at least 49 people and leaving 1,000 homeless.

The deadliest nearby earthquake occurred in the Michoacan region 470 km to the northwest of today’s event, on September 19, 1985. This magnitude 8.0 earthquake killed at least 9,500 people, injured about 30,000, and left 100,000 people homeless.

The 1985 Mexico City earthquake, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake that struck Mexico City on the early morning of 19 September 1985 at around 7:19 am (CST), caused the deaths of at least 10,000 people and serious damage to the greater Mexico City Area. The complete seismic event consisted of four quakes. A pre-event quake of magnitude 5.2 occurred on 28 May 1985. The main and most powerful shock occurred 19 September, followed by two aftershocks: one on 20 September 1985 of magnitude 7.5 and the fourth occurring seven months later on 30 April 1986 of magnitude 7.0. The quakes were located off the Mexican Pacific coast, more than 350 km away, but due to strength of the quake and the fact that Mexico City sits on an old lake-bed, Mexico City suffered major damage. The event caused between three and four billion USD in damage as 412 buildings collapsed and another 3,124 were seriously damaged in the city. While the number is in dispute, the most-often cited number of deaths is an estimated 10,000 people but experts agreed that it could be up to 40,000 (source : Wikipedia)

More recently, a 2003 magnitude 7.6 Colima, Mexico earthquake 640 km to the northwest of today’s event killed 29 people, destroyed more than 2,000 homes and left more than 10,000 homeless.

mexico - Strong shaking indicated Oaxaca de Juarex, MX - I am originally from Washington State so I know what earthquakes can do. Seemed to be more on the moderate shaking scale but not exactly sure, as it has been a while since I experienced an actual shaking earthquake as opposed to a rolling earthquake. acapulco - Strong shaking indicated Toluca,Mexico - Strong shaking indicated Mexico DF - as usual isn't an nice experince Copilco, DF, Mexico - Moderate shaking indicated Mexico City - 3rd floor of some sturdy 5-floor buildings that survived the last big one. I often don't even notice weaker quakes, but this one had very noticeable shaking, which even made me dizzy, and lasted 20-30 seconds. Mexico - Moderate shaking indicated Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca - Got me running out of the house! still felt the dirt in street moving under me for several minutes. Mexico City, Mexico - I could feel the ground shaking and see the walls moving for at least a minute. It was more severe than the earthquake on December 11, 2011. We almost immediately lost power as well. Puebla - Strong shaking indicated Mexico DF - I Have witnessed the earthquake that occured back in december. This was much more strong than before. It started out as a little one but the longer it went on it got stronger. It honestly felt like my eyes were going cross-eyed i couldnt even see straight the whole house was moving. Scary things to deal with!!! Mexico City - It was a side-to-side type shaking/waving, and definitely the strongest I've felt. I was on the 5th floor and felt it was necessary to leave the building. Many of the residents did the same, running down the stairs and waiting outside until it let up. Hidalgo - Strong shaking Cuernavaca, Mexico - The rolling got me to run out of my house with my daughter. Moderate shaking of my ceiling fans. Also, felt an aftershock about 10 minutes later. Can not get a hold of my husband who is in Mexico City. The phone lines are down. Mexico City - I am native from Mexico City. This earthquake felt very strong and with long duration. I live in the north part of the city. It seems there are no critical events, right now people is calm and everything is continuing as always. Cuernavaca, Morelos - about 30 seconds MEXICO - I am out in Atizapan de Zaragoza in the hills and I never feel earthquakes but this one I did. The hanging light pendants were swinging and the house was shaking, I almost thought the house was going to fall. I have never felt anything like it. Oaxaca - Was having a coffee with friends when it all started. Hope that was all... Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca - It felt really strong here, because it was an oscillatory movement and we are about 300km from the epicenter, thankfully no reports of people injured or constructions damaged so far (14:13 EST) Zumpango - It started moderate and finish with a violent shaking, in Mexico, D.F., people in Zumpango, Estado de México feel it to. Nuevo Vallarta - I WORK IN A RESORT MY BUILDING IS ONLY 9 FLOORS HIGH, I´M USUALLY WORKING AT THE SECOND FLOOR BUT TODAY I WAS AT THE EIGHT FLOOR EXACTLY WHEN IT HIT AND OMG I GOT SCARED WOW IT WAS STRONG ... Mexico - While shopping at Sam's, we felt marked tremors. Cashier told us to leave, could not help but notice how calm and polite everyone was. México City - Movimiento rápido de norte a sur y luego de este a oeste, imposible caminar, activación de alerta sísmica, perdida de energia, no comunicaciones, desplazamiento de 50 centimetros de las lámparas. Me recordo a terremoto 1985. Tlatelolco, Mexico City. - Vivo en el piso 23 de una torre habitacional. El sismo empezó cmo otros pero tomo fuerza. Me preocupé cuando libros y otros objetos empezaron a volar alegremente. La fuerza del sismo era tal que era imposible ponerse de pie/I live on the 24th floor of a bulding in this area. The quake began slowly but began to be stronger and stronger, books and objets from shleves began to fly around. It was so intense that it was impossible to stand up. A frightening experience! Mexico City - I'm located in the Del Valle neighborhood in Mexico City. Firstly, Mexico City's Seismic Alert System went off, some 50 seconds prior to the first seismic waves hitting the building. At the beginning, the rolling movements were gentle, but after 30 seconds the ground shaking became nerves-breaking. The strong part of the earthquake lasted nearly 30 seconds, and then it went down to an almost imperceptible rolling movement that lasted almost 3.5 minutes, due to muddy soil conditions underneath.

A strong earthquake has struck the Philippines near Surigao. With a magnitude of M5.9 and a depth of 16km, some damage could be expected in Surigao.  The town of Dinagat is only 2km from the predicted epicenter.

Update 21/03:- 45 people have been injured as a result of this earthquake, with 5 people hospitalised – this is the FINAL TOTAL. 

In addition 4 houses have been destroyed in Barangay Roxas on Dinagat Island.

20 houses have been damaged in Barangay Roxas, 4 houses damaged in Barangay Imee and 10 houses damaged in Barangay Cuarinta – all on Dinagat Island.

In Surigao City, Gasiano Mall and the Prov. Gymnasium have minor cracks.

The Barangay Roxas has a partially damaged multi-purpose wharf. These damages occurred in Basilisa. Minor cracks have also occurred in other locations.

The damage in San Jose (Roxas and Imee) are equivalent to P2.5 million (60,000 USD).

The total damage is expected to be around P5 million from this quake (120,000 USD).

Update :- 45 people have been injured as a result of this earthquake, with 5 people hospitalised.

The 40 outpatients mostly had abrasions, dislocations and various other minor injuries. The 5 people hospitalised had abdominal trauma etc.

Update 12:00 UTC:- An additional 20 people were injured when a stampede occured due to panic at a local shopping center. People were crushed or were injured by glass doors smashing. Most people have returned home, however 2 people are still in hospital under observation.

The 3 people injured – reported before – were a teacher and two students  who only suffered minor injuries when they were hit by a cable that broke in a public gymnasium. Damage is still being quantified by local government and the NDRRMC.

Update 09:12 UTC:- 3 people have been reported injured from the earthquake. The earthquake has been upgraded to CATDAT Orange.

Minor cracks have been observed at the Gasiano Mall and Provincial Gymnasium – both in Surigao City.

Update 08:20 UTC:- Thankyou for the many felt reports from all the readers. Many reports of shaking for 20 to 30 seconds have occurred. This could be bad news for the Dinagat Islands and Surigao City.
Update 08:05 UTC:- PHIVOLCS has upgraded the magnitude to M5.9 with a depth of 16km. Damage is now expected by PHIVOLCS, and the NDRRMC will be giving a report.
At least 10 damaging earthquakes have occurred within 100km of the present epicenter with magnitudes between Mw5.0 and Mw6.0. An earthquake in 1907 caused damage quite close to this epicenter as well as 1990 with deaths, according to the CATDAT Damaging Earthquakes Database.

PHIVOLCS has said that they are not expecting damage however the following felt intensities have occurred.

Intensity V (PEIS)  – General Luna, Surigao del Norte – strong shaking.
Intensity IV – Carrascal, Surigao del Sur
Intensity III – Tolosa and Tacloban Leyte

PAGER is expecting intensities of VI.

A report from Madrid on the Surigao peninsula is of intensity VII (however this is only one value). Surigao has 2 reported intensities of V.

Considering the Masbate City earthquake of M5.2 and 23km depth the other week with a lower ground motion which caused 10 injuries and some housing damage, it is expected that this earthquake will also cause damage.

The nearest populated places are: Buenavista (15km), Cadgianao (11km), Matas (7km), Layagoang (12km), Melgar (12km), Puerto Princesa (18km), Lipata (19km), Valencia (19km). The closest civilian airport is Surigao (29km) according to GDACS, and they have released an orange alert.

The selection of a weak Magnitude, a 24 hour delivery on a worldwide list would result in an avalanche of emails (each earthquake will generate an E-mail). A more selective Magnitude, delivery option and area of your interest will give the best result. As we have decided not to use a control panel or password, the parameters of your subscription can only be changed by canceling your subscription (link in each Email we send). To fine-tune your options, simply generate a new subscription. We will not share your E-mail with anyone else, it will be used only for earthquake alerts. Please make sure that you are white listing our emails as otherwise they may be deviated to your spam folder.
