Update January 14 18:33 UTC : Theage.com.au writes : A Kallista resident said she felt her house shake violently just before 4pm and that the tremor had left a crack in the ceiling of one room.

We do not expect any damage from this earthquake. Fallen objects are a common minor damage phenomenon, but certainly no serious structural damage. The earthquake may have been felt by many Tennis Stars as the Australian Open starts today ! We are curious how many of them may have felt the earthquake.

  • Emerald in victoria - A quick pulse of shaking rolled under the house,which shook every thing at around 4pm local time
  • Avonsleigh - At 1600 brief strong rolling and shuddering house, windows rattled loudly.
  • Bayswater, Victoria Australia - Office building felt like a truck ran into it, shook windows and lights flickered.
  • Melbourne - No damage. short 15second type duration woke a sleeping cat. felt inside.
  • Melbourne - No damage just sounded like a heavy truck or train going past, was enough to make the house shake.
  • Melbourne - loud rumble, big bang, house shook
  • Upwey - Felt like a Wave under the house and then a bomb going off

  • Rowville - Heard and felt a rumble as I sat on my couch in the loungeroom. My daughter, who was upstairs, said it shook the top floor. Quite alarmed.

  • Melbourne - Rapid moderate tremor, about 3:59 pm. Haven't found any damage yet

  • Melbourne outer east - Earth rumbled and moved east to west - felt 'push' under us. I feel it emanated from Dandenong or Ferntree Gully, just SE of here. There is a fault line there. Saw and felt precursors this morning.
  • Melbourne - 16:00 Felt and heard a rumble that seemed to 'roll' under the house. Mild-moderate shaking accompanied by a sound like distant thunder.

  • Melbourne Victoria - No damage. Rolling thunder type noise and roof vibration.

  • Cockatoo - felt like a large tree falling followed by a large boom
  • Melbourne - very loud snap under the earth beneath our house and then a loud rumble like thunder

  • Victoria - No property damage just a horrible feeling I hope Australia never gets what Christchurch New Zealand got.
  • Ferntree Gully - A group of us standing in the Angliss hospital all felt the shake.
  • Victoria - No damage. Was sitting outside on deck and whole house started shaking. It happened twice. Only lasted about 5-7 seconds. Sounded like a truck had run into other side f house.
  • Croydon - A rumble noise before a loud bang noise. The floor vibrated when the loud noise came. Sounded like an explosion.
  • Melbourne - Wow massive rumble in the street, then felt a big sonic like wave travel under the house and a few things inside shook. Heard a few big cracks near some windows and plaster walls but luckily no damage. Just a heap of petals from my girlfriends flowers fell off. - Unreal yet scary feeling!!
  • Melbourne - 30-45 seconds of vibration, felt like an explosion - loads of dust kicked up, but no fire/smoke around.
  • Melbourne - Heard a really Big Bang thought something had blown up about 15 seconds,scared the crap out of me
  • Chirnside Park - Sounded like someone ran into the building, very short, but strong
  • Rowville - House shook and dog went crazy
  • Lilydale - 2 loud bangs-felt like something impacted with house. Windows rattled. House shook briefly. Oppressive atmosphere.

  • Sassafras - Shock sounded like explosion or earth mover ramming house .. quite scary as it was unusually short but big
  • Greensborough - A large rumbling lasting about 3 seconds sounded like a truck passing house, with weak shaking.
  • Melbourne - Felt a rumble and windows rattled.
  • Melbourne - It wasn't so much a shaking, more just a loud boom and thundering sound after it, maybe some weak shaking.
  • Melbourne - Sounded like thunder rolling thru the street for a good second or two then a massive sonic like wave travel under the house from the street to the back. Everything in the house shook and heard a few big cracks around the plaster board of a certain window in the lounge. All ok luckily and no damage. just noticed my girlfriends petals from her flowers all over the table thou. Went for about 3-4 secs. Pretty unreal yet scary!!
  • Melbourne - I work nightshift, so I was in bed at around 4 when I heard a rumbling sound, sort of like a harsh wind, then my wall shook and then in turn my whole bed shook..I was so drowsy I thought somehow the wind had caused it! I came to my senses though, it was pretty strong

  • Wantirna South - I was ironing clothes in my family room when the earthquake moved my house. We have a 19 ft cathedral ceiling in that room and it sounded and felt as though the frame of the house, especially towards the ceiling was definitely straining and slowly moving. It was a little scary, I had thoughts that building material could be damaged at the top part of the house, and even more so if the movement had continued.

  • The Patch - Brief rumble then loud explosion-like bang followed by 10-15 seconds of further rumble
  • ferntree gully - whole house shook. Pictures on wall moved but didn't fall. loud noise as if truck had hit or explosion. no damage. very un nerving as didn't know what was happening. Left us shaking.very much stronger than others felt in past.

  • Berwick - Vibration & rumbling sound like large dump track right next door
  • Prestonia - Was like an roaring jet engine(doppler effect) into a rumbling bang. No damage, but felt house shake.
  • St Kilda. Melbourne - I was in a 2nd floor apartment when a I felt approximately 15 seconds of mild shaking beneath my feet. This also combined with a rumbling sound unique to an earth tremour.

  • Rowville - More like a Jolt that felt like it ran along the house. It felt like the house had been hit by something big, enough to make it jolt.
  • Kallista - Same experience as that described in The Patch - 'Brief rumble then loud explosion-like bang followed by 10-15 seconds of further rumble.' Whole house shook - slightly unnerving considering I live on lower level of two-storey house.
  • Melbourne - Rumble followed by what felt like a sort of thud. No detectable damage.
  • Melbourne - Sounded like an explosion at first, with light to moderate shaking. I could then hear it move further up the hill heading south. Always a little scary when it happens.
  • Ferntree Gully - We were sitting in lounge quietly looking at iPads, room started shaking, windows rattled, dogs were startled and started barking, then heard a loud rumble and a loud bang.
  • Emerald - Around 1600hrs a string rubmble shook the house. Felt like an explosion.
  • Montrose - I was sitting out on the veranda that has cathedral ceilings enjoying a cold one when I felt a short rumble, it felt deep like it came from the quarry. I noticed a lot of dust from that way shortly after. Worse yet when I went in side to check for damage I noticed that the petals had fallen of me girlfriends flowers.
  • doncaster - Sitting on 2nd floor office building felt shaking feeling joked that a truck hit the building went straight to twitter to see it was much more
  • Boronia - Sounded like a truck had crashed on the main road, loud noise and rattling of the house.
  • Coburger - I was praying to baby jebus that mya house didnt a fall over. the house a shaking very much like a train drive through the wall. help me baby jebus thought it was the coming of the lord.
  • Melbourne - 2 shockwaves five seconds apart, second one larger than the first. Rumbling sound started just before and stopped a few seconds after. Didn't feel like shaking, felt more like a thump.... thump as the shockwaves passed through.
  • Melbourne - Felt like a bomb went off in very close proximity - no warning rumbling before or after. Felt far more intense than a 2.7
  • Belgrave South - very loud noise followed by light shaking. whole house was shaking for about 5 seconds a bit of a crack in 1 window but nothing worse then that
  • Doncaster - No damage, felt like something bumped the house twice
  • Montrose - Sitting in the kitchen having a yack with the family & suddenly felt & heard what sounded like a huge explosion underneath us - deep in the ground. Then a loud rumbling & crack. It got us up and out of our seats and out the back door real quick! I thought our neighbour had exploded something in his shed, so we ran over & checked on him. He thought it was the Quarry on Canterbury Rd. I dropped by the Quarry on the way home & they said they weren't firing today & that they felt it too. Scary stuff

  • Melbourne - Having a bat and there was a loud bang looke around for any mess but thank baby Jesus there was only a bit of goop
  • Hobart - I had just started to watch me first hour long movie on lubetube when I fell a sudden shake. when I looked down I realised that my grandmother was hiding under the desk I asked her to stop but she insisted on finishing. I find it amazing that everyone else had the same experience this afternoon
  • Melbourne - This tremor was like having a possum the size of a truck run across the roof!

  • Clifton Hill - Was lying in bed at 11pm, bed started shaking, so I turned on the lamp and it was rattling on the bedstand. Lasted 3-4 seconds then stopped. Seems like everyone else felt it at 4pm - potential aftershock?
  • Berwick - quickly looked outside to see if a truck had collided with something...very quick 3 second tremmor shook the entire double story house.lucky i had underwear on !
  • Melbourne - Wife thought a truck was passing by. Yet to check exterior of building for damage.
  • Melbourne - I heard a sound like five planes flying over me at the same time.
  • Bayswater - It didn't really shake the house. It felt like a truck or something had driven into only one side of the house. It was loud....like a really loud bang. It lasted only a few seconds. My son said it was an earthquake...straight away.
  • Ternes Road - Sounded like a load of bricks fell onto the roof. Whole building shook.
  • Melbourne - It's felt like a truck had hit our factory and an explosion
  • Bayswater Norh - Concrete tilt panels walls shook strongly probably between light and moderate shaking
  • Mooroolbark - Sounded like a large bolder cracking/splitting under pressure or a fuel tanker exploding. Moved house and outbuildings. Very intense without any build-up or forewarning.
  • Melbourne - So far no damage , just heard a Big Bang ,my dog barked !
  • Warrandyte North - Felt the house move, made my 6YO Son jump up from playing PS3. Heard a loudish rumble and felt like a large tree falling close to the property. No damage at all though
  • Melbourne - No damaged caused, moderate shaking throughout house
  • Pakenham - A loud explosive bang and a very brisk shake. I wasn't sure at first whether it was a large truck hitting something solid or an earthquake. It was very short but surprisingly strong and I wasn;t exactly sure how to assess it on the above list. No damage to property.

    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.

    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
