Update 10:28 UTC : ER expects this earthquake to be just below the minor damage level, but if anyone of our readers should notice even small damage like cracks in walls or find out from other people, please let us know.

USGS expects only weak to very weak shaking.

A double earthquake struck the Gilroy, California area. The first one being a M2.5 will have been hardly felt by the people, but the second (30 minutes later)  M3.7 more as many people were waken up because of it.

  • Gilroy, CA - It heard a rumble noise and then a kind of rocking sensation for a few seconds, Gilroy, CA approximately 2:10 this morning
  • Gilroy - Woke all members of household, including sound sleepers.
  • Aptos - Minor shaking that lasted about 6-8 seconds
  • Seaside, CA - 2:05 a.m. bed shook lightly for 2-3 seconds...enough that I knew there had been an earthquake.
  • GILROY - Just woke us up.
  • Aromas - Punch with a roll--woke up
  • San Jose - Shook the bed enough to wake me up, Wasn't sure if it was an earthquake so I checked this morning to confirm.
  • GILROY - It woke me up, weak shaking and some noise, no known damage.
  • Gilroy - It shook enough to wake the dog & me. Wife slept right through it
  • aromas - Felt a nice shake woke me and my wife and knocked down some ornaments from our christmas tree....
  • Salinas - Heard it just before the shaking. Lasted long enough to wake 3 adults and 2 dogs.
  • Watsonville - I woke up like 30 Seconds before it happened and it scared the poop out of me, my brother felt it too :o
  • Gilroy - Light to moderate shake. Enough to wake our family. No damages in the house. Just insomnia after the shake.;)
  • Watsonville - House felt like something hit it. Strong boom not rolling.
  • Gilroy - Rumbling and then mild shaking enough to wake us up. Scared the cats and dog
  • Morgan Hill - Woke up and was wide awake. Didn't know why because I am a deep sleeper.
  • Aptos, CA - A short but strong jolt shook me awake this morning around 2am.
  • Morgan Hill - Upstairs felt bed shake and doors rattle. Did not hear any dogs bark in the neighborhood.
  • Morgan hill - Woken up
  • Avante - no damage. i just felt a bit of shaking
  • Santa Cruz - Heard it that woken up, then felt house movement
  • Santa Cruz - woke me up just after 2 am. rumbling, then slight shaking/rolling.
  • Aptos - I heard the house shaking and felt a small tremor. It lasted only a few seconds.
  • Hollister - Woke me up
  • Gilroy - Felt some shaking in my sleep.
  • Gilroy - Woke with the bed shaking and a rumbling noise
  • Gilroy ca - Rattling windows and shaking ceiling woke me up. No damage.
  • Gilroy - It was a jolt and then a little shake and that was all we felt.
  • Aptos - Up with my two year old at 2:00 am (my birthday) and felt it. First heard, then felt.
  • Concord - I think my dog felt it. She is easily scared by things such as wind storms. In the middle of the night she jumped on the bed and snuggled with me. Like she was spooked or scared. Normally she sneaks on the bed. I kicked her off a dozen times. She was not going to sleep on her bed.
  • Corralitos - I woke up then felt the light shaking. Why do we wake up first?
  • Santa Cruz - I just felt some weak shaking that lasted a couple seconds.
  • Aromas - I felt a shaking roll for a bout 10 seconds? It woke me and my son up. By the way all 3 of my cats were being a total nuisance beforehand kept jumping on me and sitting in my lap or on my legs. I kept moving that but they kept coming back. They NEVER do that. By the way they still are. Strange.
  • Watsonville, CA - No known damage.
  • Aptos,CA - i was sleeping,it woke me up,felt the groun rumbling,lamp next to my bed was shaking...i am very sensitive to things so i woke up.
  • Marina - Was woken up at around 2 am by a light shaking earthquake; was short, but certainly nerve racking.
  • Coolville - We heard a loud boom and the pictures rattled on the wall. We had equipment running so we thought the sound was possibly a very loud gun!

    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
