Strong earthquake in Chihuahua, Mexico – Houses have been damaged.

12 homes have been damaged in Parral as a result of this quake and intense rains they had this week.

Update 6:57 UTC:
The quake was felt in at least 7 municipalities for around 10 seconds, it was felt as far away as Creel with damage reported as far as 100km from the epicenter.
-The closest dams weren’t damaged by this quake, CONAGUA will keep a look on this dams for the next days.

Update  6:39 UTC:
-In Delicias (54km from the epicenter):
Clinic number 11 of Delicias was damaged in the floors 2nd and 3rd resulting in the evacuation of 70 people.
There are 2 houses  reported as damaged, one with a collapsed wall and the other with a collapsed roof.
-In Chihuahua, Chihuahua (100km from the epicenter) people are reporting cracks on their houses and sidewalks.
-In Parral (100km from the epicenter) 3 landslides occurred as a result of this quake combined with the heavy rains.

Update 15:52 UTC:
Residents reported some damage like cracked walls to local fire department. Official investigations are still running. Important roads and dams were not damaged.
Many people are now asking for the reason of this increased seismicity. Authorities planning explorations to find it. Heavy rainfall in the last weeks, also caused by hurricanes Manuel and Ingrid, is the most probable reason.

This quake is the strongest of a series of quake, hitting Southern Chihuahua in recent weeks. It was felt as far as Chihuahua City. A smaller aftershock with Magnitude 4.8 followed some minutes later.
2 of the earlier quakes in Chihuahua caused damage, more damage is expected by this quake.
It is one of the strongest quakes hitting Chihuahua in the last decades.

  • Chihuahua - I start hearing that the tv was moving...and it was scary... i wake my husband to tell him that the tv was moving and doing noises... he didn't believe me.. so i start t look in internet if it could possible happen in chihuahua... and my surprise was that is no the first time....

  • Parral - It was horrible waking up to an earthquake. . . i couldn't believe it i was in shock when it happened i didn't move at all from the bed until after it finished. Ive been scared all day i haven't gotten out of bed i feel like if i move from here something could happen. I'm paranoid D:
  • CD. Juarez - I did not feel it, but the wall got crack and part of the ceiling was damage.
  • Chihuahua - Second story apartment, windows clacking and bed like if someone was moving it to waking us up.
  • delicias chihuauha - its been at leas 4 times in 2 weeks very short ones but very strong ones .. sure very rare in an area thats not known to have this events

    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
