Aftershock on June 16 click here for the seismogram and detailed maps

Update June 16 – 09:04 UTC : People sunbathing in Crete are probably not knowing what is going on to the south of the island. At max. they may feel some very weak shaking, but the earthquakes are continuing in the epicenter area as can be seen on the Geofon seismogram at Gavdos below.

And where do they happen ? The red block is the latest earthquake having Magnitude of 4.3. All of the major aftershocks are occurring to the south of the mainshock epicenter.

Update 17:08 UTC : The Greek Institute of Geodynamics, the local seismological agency reports a Magnitude of Ml5.9 at a depth of 15 km.

Update 17:05 UTC : 4 aftershocks so far, all in the M4 range, but as they were far out in the sea (same area as the mainshock, almost nobody will have felt it on Crete itself)

Update 17:01 UTC : The Focal Mechanism of this earthquake.

Update 16:58 UTC : The origin of the accumulated stress of this earthquake comes from the subduction fault to the south of the island. The red line on the map below.

Update 16:54 UTC : The image below shows the shaking strength of this earthquake. Only a light shaking is expected by USGS (they have reported a Mw6.2 Magnitude) on Crete and may have been felt by 592,000 people (probably without counting the many tourists).

Screen Shot 2013-06-15 at 18.53.10

Update 16:51 UTC : The first few minutes after the earthquake there were glitches in electronic devices and the Internet

Update 16:45 UTC : The closest distance from the epicenter to the coastal I Have Felt It reports we have received is 115 km, which is a safe distance for this kind of earthquakes.

Update 16:43 UTC : This earthquake was also felt in the North African countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea like Egypt, etc.

Update 16:39 UTC : Based on the preliminary information that we have at the moment, we are almost certain that this earthquake will NOT generate damage or injuries + we do NOT expect a tsunami at these Magnitudes.

When you are one of the people who experienced this earthquake, please fill in the form behind “I Felt A (not Listed) Earthquake”. Thank you.

Update 16:37 UTC : The seismogram shows also some aftershocks. These will continue the following hours and days but will (normally, not always) getting weaker gradually.

Update 16:36 UTC : We are in the tourist season in Greece at the moment. For many tourists such an event is something extraordinary, which it is of course. Please read our BE PREPARED FOR AN EARTHQUAKE while residing on the island.

Update 16:33 UTC : This is how this earthquake was recorded by the GEOFON seismograph located at the south of Crete Island

Screen Shot 2013-06-15 at 18.33.31

Update 16:26 UTC : Earthquakes are occurring often in this area where 1 plate subducts the other. The accumulated stress that gets too big triggers the earthquake.

The Magnitude is reported differently by the seismological agencies. Geofon (Germany) reports a Magnitude of M6.0 and EMSC M5.5, both preliminary of course.

  • Plevriana - As I live in New Zealand I am very aware of earthquakes happening
  • Crete - We felt a slight swaying back and forth. maybe 5 sec duration (via emsc)
  • Petrokefalo - Time about 30 to 40 seconds. (via emsc)
  • Stavrakia - When standing it felt like being on a boat with some moderate strength of the waves. Our cats were not distracted by the earthquake at all. ,(via emsc)
  • Heraklion - its duration was long, it must have lasted over a minute. The shaking was moderate and its motion was random, back to forth and then left to right and vice versa. (via emsc)
  • Cairo, Egypt - fixtures were shaking and felt the home swinging a little.
  • Tertsa, gr70004 - kratise arketi ora toulaxiston 50 defterolepta
  • Heraklion - I was listening to Bolt Thrower and thinking "Nahh it's got to be the music". It kept going, then I noticed stuff shaking and turned up the volume. Great soundtrack for an EQ :)
  • Nicosia - light shaking for 5 secs
  • Agios Nikolaos - σαν να ξεριζωνόταν ...η γη! άκουσα τα σκυλιά στο δρόμο και στις αλλες πολυκατοικίες που γαύγιζαν συνέχεια (via emsc)
  • Chania - We normally have many dogs barking at this time along with chirping bird...all was quiet...even birds. Felt it slightly at first, had to look at glass of water that was next to me to confirm it was an earthquake...then felt the slight sway/rumble of our building. Used the glass of water to verify that the quake had ended. (via emsc)
  • Mires - It was quiet strong and lasted about 20 seconds. It was getting stronger and stronger, that got me scared a bit but until i had decided to get up and runaway it had stopped. (via emsc)
  • Crete - It was very light. In the beginning, I though I was feeling a bit dizzy, but then I realized an open door in my house was swaying (via emsc)
  • Rethymnon - feel like on the boat in stormy sea, but this time very "small wawes". But feel longer time, then usually
  • Istron Kalo horio - I was sat on our terrace and felt my chair moving as if being blown by the wind, I asked my wife if the wind was that strong and she said no but by that time the quake had stopped
  • Analipsi - Sensatori hotel, we felt the hotel move and saw lights swinging, I knew what it was and we left to go outside away from building
  • Ierapetra - earthquakes are never fun
  • Georgioupoli - Zeer zwakschudden gedurende 5-10 sec
  • kato gouves, crete - My bed was shaking, water in bottle also.
  • Rethymno - Felt like the movement was because i got dizzy. But an other person in the house, resting on the bed told me that feels that moves too. After i saw the water in a bottle moving and i started checking on internet if it was an earthquake indeed. But the internet had problems. As i read in articles, on the time of the earthquake and after there were some network and electric devices problems.
  • Gazi, Heraklion, Crete - I was walking in a rural area when I heard a strong noise from a heavy metal farm gate (crackle) and a few seconds later people was leaving the buildings arround(some country houses and a research institute) without panic.
  • Rethymno - I was sitting with friend in the garden and suddenly the earth was shaking under our feet for a long time.It was less scaring than being in an apartment up in the air. The swimingpool water was shaking too.Interesting experience.
  • Kato Chorio, Lassithi - man spürte drei sehr schwache Wellenbewegungen
  • iraklion - my house literally fell over and i exploded

MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
