This (almost) daily post intends to follow up the activity changes of volcanoes all over the world.
This post is written by geologist Rodger Wilson who specializes in Volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck. Please feel free to tell us about new or changed activity if we haven’t written about it. -
March 7, 2013 volcano activity
An early volcano report flash to announce that Popocatepetl volcano is currently in eruption. This is the strongest eruption since i make my daily volcano activity reports.
Follow the current activity on one of these webcams.

Only days after it was first observed growing in the summit crater, a new lava dome was removed by an explosive eruption this morning at Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico). The eruption continues at the time of this writing. Strong volcanic tremor generated by gas and magma movement is visible on the Popo seismogram. Explosive activity also continues in short but frequent bursts at Colima volcano (unfortunately NO webcam).
Normal daily overview BELOW the pictures of the early activity !
KVERT reports that seismicity has returned to a moderate level within Sheveluch volcano (Kamchatka Peninsula) overnight. Eruptive behavior at the five remaining active Kamchatkan volcanoes: Tolbachik, Bezymianny, Kliuchevskoi, Kizimen, and Karymsky has not changed significantly overnight. Moderate seismicity continues to affect Gorely volcano, in-conjuction with strong hydrothermal activity there.
Seismicity remains elevated at Iliamna volcano (Alaska Range) (station INE) today.
A burst of shallow earthquakes (spasmodic tremor) occurred overnight at Mammoth Mountain volcano (CA) (station MRD). The largest of the events measured M1.7. Most of the quakes comprising the burst occurred around 4 km depth beneath the volcano. Tremor is visible just after 2:30 UTC on the MRD seismogram.
Volcanic activity is subdued (compared to the past few days!) at Guatemalan volcanoes: Fuego (small strombolian explosions at summit, increasing tremor the past few hours) (station FG3), Santiaguito Dome Complex (Santa Maria volcano) (one moderate explosion to 3200 meters altitude at 5:39 am Local time), and Pacaya (station PCG) (continuous low-level volcanic tremor).
Periods of banded volcanic tremor continue at San Cristobal volcano (Nicaragua) (station CRIN). Amplitudes of volcanic earthquakes have been elevated at Telica volcano (station TELN) the past few days. The increased activity at the volcano follows an volcano-tectonic earthquake swarm there last week. Volcanic earthquakes continue to exhibit higher (than normal) amplitudes at Concepcion volcano (station CONN) as well. Another local earthquake occurred this morning at/near Momotombo volcano (station MOMN). Earthquake activity near Momotombo has been elevated since last week.
Volcanic tremor amplitude abruptly dropped at San Miguel volcano (El Salvador) (station VSM) this morning, following a burst of volcanic earthquakes. Higher amplitude volcanic earthquakes continue at the volcano, suggesting unrest is not quite over at San Miguel.
An episode of shallow volcanic earthquakes early today was followed more recently by a period of sustained low-level volcanic tremor at Nevado Del Ruiz volcano (Colombia) (station OLLZ). Volcanic tremor ended at the volcano a few hours ago. Tiny local earthquakes rattle Galeras volcano (station ANGV).
The level of strong volcanic tremor and earthquakes appear to have “plateau-ed” overnight at Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador) (station RETU). Inclement weather obscures direct observation of activity at the volcano. The level of volcanic tremor and earthquakes remains unsteady at Reventador volcano (station CONE).
Instituto Geofisico del Peru reports numbers of volcano-tectonic, low-frequency (volcanic), and hybrid (mixed source) earthquakes all are in decline at Sabancaya volcano since unusual activity commenced at/near the volcano in late February. IGP has a nice report posted on their website about the unrest (including a recent seismogram and photo of summit fumarolic activity).
Another pulse of volcano-tectonic earthquakes occurred during the past 24 hours at White Island volcano (New Zealand). A few small local earthquakes are visible on seismograms from compatriot volcanoes Tongariro and Ruapehu today.
Recent OMI satellite imagery shows SO2-enriched plumes over/near Popocatepetl, Ambrym (Vanuatu), and Nyiragongo volcanoes. Recent MODIS satellite thermal imagery captured thermal anomalies occurring at active vents: Tolbachik, Popocatepetl, Santiaguito, and Etna (Italy).
