Volcano activity of February 3, 2013

Last update: February 4, 2013 at 2:28 pm by By

This (almost) daily post intends to follow up the activity changes of volcanoes all over the world.
This post is written by geologist Rodger Wilson who specializes in Volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck. Please feel free to tell us about new or changed activity if we haven’t written about it. -

February 3, 2013 volcano activity

Strong volcanic tremor accompanies the ongoing basaltic fissure erutpion at Plosky Tolbachik (Kamchatka Peninsula).  Seismicity levels have not changed at other erupting Kamchatkan volcanoes: Kizimen, Bezymianny, Kliuchevskoi, Sheveluch and Karymsky.  Seismicity remains at moderate level at steaming Gorely volcano.

Earthquake activity continues at low level at Iliamna volcano (Alaska Range) (station INE).  Additional small rockfall/avalanche activity occurred at the volcano at 6:15 pm AKST yesterday.  A pulse of small, local earthquakes struck Mount Spurr volcano (station CKT) at around 1:30 am AKST today.

Small earthquakes continue beneath Mammoth Mountain volcano (CA) (station MMS), while larger magnitude events occur in the Sierra Neveado immediately to the southeast.

Small volcanic earthquakes, explosions and rockfalls affect Colima volcano (Mexico) again today. While exhalations of gas and ash have diminished to an average of once every two hours at Popocatepetl volcano, seismicity (in the form of volcanic tremor and small earthquakes) remains high beneath/within the cone.

Seismic data from the Guatemalan volcanoes is still inaccessible, but the Santiaguito volcanocam shows relatively low-level activity today.  MODIS satellite thermal imagery shows a multi-pixel anomaly at Fuego volcano which corresponds to an active lava flow descending the volcano’s flank.

Volcanic tremor remains elevated at Masaya volcano (Nicaragua) (station MASN) today.

Local volcanic earthquakes and a few regional events punctuate continuous low-level volcanic tremor at San Miguel volcano (El Salvador) (station VSM) much as they have the past week.

Small volcanic earthquakes and periods of low-level volcanic tremor continue to affect Nevado Del Ruiz volcano (Colombia) (station OLLZ).  Tiny local events are visible on seismograms at Machin (station CIMA), Cumbal (station MEVZ), and Galeras (station ANGV) volcanoes.

Volcanic earthquakes (admixed with low-level volcanic tremor) remain frequent at Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador) (station RETU).  Slowly flagging seismic equipment records continued high levels of seismicity at Reventador volcano (station CONE) today.

SERNAGEOMIN reports little change in the level (low) of volcanic tremor within Copahue volcano (Chile-Argentina border) during the past 24 hours.

The number of hybrid earthquakes at White Island volcano (New Zealand) continues to increase while the level of volcanic tremor recorded at the volcano is fluctuating somewhat.  Seismicity is low at neighboring Tongariro and Ruapehu volcanoes.

Recent satellite imagery shows SO2-enriched plumes (of various sizes) drifting from Popocatepetl, Copahue, Nyiragongo (DRC), Ambrym (Vanuatu), Sakurajima (Japan), and possibly, Dukono (Sangihe arc) volcanoes in the past day.  MODIS satellite thermal imagery shows a “hotspot” high in the Chilean Andes today.  The anomaly does not occur over an identified volcanic vent, so it is unclear whether the heat source is volcanogenic or not.  It is unlikely that the source is man-made or combustion-derived given its arid, high altitude location.
